So the paintjob on a new body didn't come out like I was hoping. Am I stuck with it or can it be removed without damaging the body?

I hate to say it, but you're probably stuck with it. You can try and use Nitro fuel to remove the paint, but it can cloud up the clear of the body. Your other option would be to lightly scuff sand the outside of the body, thoroughly wash with Dawn dish soap, let it dry, then wipe down with isopropyl alcohol and spray the exterior with a product like Krylon fusion. I've purposely painted several bodies this way and it holds up quite well.

you can paint it on the outside and it will get scratched and show the paint underneath. I would not worry too much if you plan to use the RC regularly it will get scratched and scuffed anyways. you can try to take the paint off but it will not be back to perfect.

Ummmm, IDK the current formula to Purple Power, the degreaser, but that will strip paint off of a 1:1 car if left on for too long, and that's what used to be used around here for stripping paint off of hardbodies AND lexan.....2006ish.....

Brake fluid IIRC, made bodies brittle AF after....at least the white abs clod bodies.

Rustolem 2X paint works well for painting the outside of lexan bodies. I have used the satin finish....

an update: I have a couple of crawlers I painted the outside of the lexan, I used a satin finish and have now discovered a mist coat of Matte Clear Rustolem 2X and most of the scuffs disappear and the deep scratches are less noticeable. The finish scratches easier on the outside but easier to refinish......I think if I were to put a coat of Matt clear on a new body it would look better longer......maybe.....or not.
