What did you do today?

Our small comp meet yesterday didn't go as planned so the 6 of us just enjoyed the time out with the leftover donuts and chit chat. When we were doing some crawling, my Reefs 900LP decided it wanted to "brown out" I think the term is. It was hot to the touch, and also left it with the battery unplugged in hopes it just got too hot or something. When it happened it wasn't under any kind of stress, just easy test crawling through gates.
As I've got it on the bench now, I discovered it only functions if I help it/apply pressure to the wheel to turn. It's an awesome servo, but I've never had this issue with any other servos. I'll put in a warranty claim.

There are other folks that have also had 'brownouts' on the 900lp specifically. I will be using my first direct power servo in the Origin build, Reefs Triple 8. I have a lot of Reefs servos and not had an issue, though I don't have the 900LP in my servo list. And as noted, the Trip8 is my first for DP servos.

Seems they do get hot and have stalls or freezes, maybe from heat I'm guessing on that one but it seems likely.

So don't sweat using a Reefs. This seems to only be a 900LP thing so just don't use that one.
777, 888, are strong direct powers. Im running 2 800lps in my optic as they are a strong go to from what I've saw, but they're not DP either.

Today I went in and fixed an AC unit I didn't get finished up last night. Then came home and worked on the Drag Slash I'm converting to a Late Model oval car.

Made a thread on it here:

Uh oh that's not good to hear about the warranty department lol. Well, if the claim falls through then I guess I'll be putting something else in that's not a Reefs product. It would be awesome if they took care of it for me though because I really love this servo and thought I hit the home run with it, even if it's up there in price.

Also my Triple 7 servo has held up in my Venture, 422 V2 winch as well, and 299LP in my Slash.
You have to explain your avatar LOL, please!

That's my bad, I meant to say Trucks of Freedom lol.

You landed a nice set of wheels there sir. It's not what I call a random color (blue, red, green, purple etc). I've personally never bought ToF or WoF. Yeah I understand you can easily make your money back and then some by parting out but I usually focus on things I want or need for a build.

I wanted .8 wide wheels and i got .8 wide wheels, so I can't complain. Riot isn't my favorite wheel, but I'll run it. Hoped for something battleborn, but I just knew i was going to end up pulling a standard color 105 or Tank. Lol. This is a nice middle ground.

I just finished putting a spare on my wives SUV.
When I was out with my dogs an hour ago I heard a thumping sound, just as soon as it arrived it went away. I thought maybe I picked up a piece of rubber from an expansion joint or something.
Nope. A few moments later the TPMS alert went off, first yellow then switched to red. I pulled over right away, I could see a 1/4 bit sticking out of the tire. Crap.
Thankfully I was two minutes from home so I raced there before it went full flat in the driveway.

I messaged my salesman, he was supposed to be taking my truck back in for some paint work.
He said bring in the Pilot first and I'll get to take the loaner for this repair, than switch out the truck. Thankfully we had all this arranged so we still maintain two cars. Take a peak at this bit guys, like holy moly.

I have to say, this thing has an amazing spare/flat tire situation. In the compartment for the tools/jack they give you a bag for the tire and the well in the trunk is semi shaped for it with some tie downs for a ratchet strap. Amazing. 🙌🏼

Here's why the truck is going back.

It keeps growing outwards. :(

I know right! I think the noise I heard was it hitting the inner fender before it went all the way in. It's crazy to me that the centrifugal force didn't send it flying.

Yes, new vehicle. Mines a 25 Ridgeline, my wives is a 24 Pilot. I'm hoping we have coverage on the tire because it'll need to be replaced.

The paint on my truck in that area has been peeling off like plastic wrap. It's like it isn't bonding to the plastic. I know when I used to do coatings we would use a plastic adhesion promotor or an etching primer. This just looks like raw plastic underneath.

I tried updating my post but it wouldn't let me.
Been dealing with my wife's car today.
Thankfully we purchased Honda + so it was all covered for a very minor fee. Tire was $300, we were responsible for 15% which worked out to $45 bucks. Plus they gave it a car wash, if I factor that at a twenty dollar value it cost me 25 bucks.
:)

Couldn't dodge the drill bit but I dodged a bullet ;)

Pretty nasty bit, lol, I don't recall when in my lifetime, but. I remember seeing a less than 1/2 inch diameter fastener about 6" long that punched through a tire and steel wheel at a tire place. Must have been a grade 8 or 9 bolt, lol.
Sorry about your baby.

Running over wood is the scarriest, IMHO or can be! A 2×4 will poke holes through your sheet metal/firewall/floor and shish kabob your ass!!!

Not bad. The Riots aren't my favorite but I dont hate them. I'd probably run that setup.

I got light blue rings, blue Impacts, and black Delta IFRs. Three colors on the wheels is a bit much for me. Probably going to sell/trade off the rings at least.

Here's the follow up email. Looks like it was battery related like Tim said earlier. Lesson learned about power hungry servos; they don't match with comp batteries. $200 gone, lol.

That sucks Goro.

Those ratings are for full load, so peak torque on the drive motor AND servo at the same time to get the max battery load. This isn't a discharger, it's an RC with dynamic loads.

With electronics you see a spike of amp draw on start and then severely when things are locked rotor (full load, unable to rotate or turn the wheels for a servo).

Imo it seems like a way of saying no dice on claims.

Interesting. I'd say run your set up by Holmes hobbies and see if they would have warranties their servo under the same conditions. He seems to be very much about comp crawlers and said he'd warranty servos running small batteries for the voltage spike issue. They warrantied mine for a different issue but I sure didn't expect them to.

@HVACTeacher - I sort of agree, but it seems all it would take is one high motor and servo load at the same time to release the magic smoke so I can see the manufacturer side of this too.

I'm actually dealing with that in my house. Just got a 1:1 electric car and just what level 2 charging which needs 40a circuit. The 240v other in my garage is 20a but I discovered there's 80a of circuits in the sub panel but only 40a breaker feeding the sub panel (all previous owner stuff). So I'm contemplating installing the 40a breaker and required wiring to the outlet but putting in a timer to make sure it is only live at night when the car will be charging and not when I'm using the other stuff in the garage.

Or pay an electrician to do it right but I think that could open a very expensive can of worms.
