here's where im at...

wraith running 60/12 32p gears, 3c batts (stock esc)and i just cooked my second 35t Holmes TM 540.

its time to buy a few more budget motors.
what has changed is, instead of slow crawling around houston i only use my wraith in west Texas in the loose sand. i find myself holding her at wide open (probably for 2 long) to make the climb. I keep re-reading harleys gearing and motor threads which are always helpful but i am looking to adapt to my new found crawling style in the loose stuff.

i dont rebuild my motors and i dont order motors too often, but when i do i have no problem ordering 2-3-or 4 of them.

i would like to keep my new-ish 32p gears because i am hard on the machine.

should i simply go down to a 27t-21t to get my wheel speed up or will my temps kill me?

and lastly.. who is in the budget motor department now a days?

Might not be a bad idea to get a clip on fan with a heat sink for the motor itself if you keep going through them, rather than just replacing it all the time. It's not be the solution, but it will help.

You would be better off switching to a brushless sensored motor and esc...will cost less in the long run....i can bet you will burn up a 27 or 21 turn brushed motor as well given how you are driving it now...with that gearing. You could go down on gearing on your 3s....maybe try a 5.50 - 6.25 ratio....but i would just go brushless

60T spur?! Definitely drop that down to a 52-54, especially on 3S.

Isn't 60 lower geared the 52/54.

Smaller pinion bigger spur eguals less heat.

Harleys guide only goes so far ever rig and driving style diferes and needs tuned. If it creating to much heat get rid of the cause of the heat.

To me it sounds like there's a good chance any motor you run might burn up we there brushed or brush less

you dont want to go to a 52 or 54 t spur with that 12t pinion..that will make the overheating matters worse as evan alluded to...drop the pinion to 11t or 10t for a 5.45 or even a 6.0 ratio and see how the temps do then..

Can you approximate how much constant full throttle running you are doing? I'm just curious..

You could try changing your tires.. Increasing traction should limit the amount of time spent at full throttle and would get you over your obstacles faster. An IR temp gun would come in handy to monitor motor temps and you would have a better idea in when to let things cool down before continuing.

Lat you could try lowering the gearing as allanon1965 suggested..

i think there is an important note that i have failed to mention. my HH motor was already on its way out before the gear change i have now. i have only made one good run before the motor got so bad i had to bump it to get it going. once it stops again its done. so i barley have any time on these new 32p gears.

in front of me i also have a 52, a 54 and a 18 and a 14 pinion all for 32p.

if i wanted to give brushed motors one more try for the sand and increased wheel speeds what turn would you fellas consider. im not afraid to burn another motor up, i am however always learning

i think your on the right track here. i do spend a lot of time spinning, and then that leads to me playing around and burying it in the sand for fun


if im gonna change it up lets do it then.... who has some suggestions/ names of sand tires i can start looking up?

had that issue for a bit. so i changed to underdrive gears front and rear. no more heat issue. still good power and wheel speed.

Not sure if they would fit but I have Proline Sand Paws on my Stampede and they throw snow and give great traction. They fit the standard 2.2 inch wheel. Don't have my Wraith kit yet but I think that is what it is.

56/14 is the tallestvid ever go..
Would never try a 52 or 54 spur.
