I've had plenty of crawlers in the past if not all of them over the years, ranging from the first Axial ax10 kits up to the most recent Vanquish H10 kit so I am def not new, but due to financial reasons I had to sell everything I had. Now I am in a better place and have funds to add one new rig. I am deciding between the VS4-10 straight axle builders kit or the Phoenix portal kit. If looking at value I am leaning towards the Phoenix portal kit because it includes the body, tires and VFD twin trans @ $380 and the builders kit is $300, so for another $80ish I feel like I'm getting more. My issue is I don't want the portals so I'd have to buy straight axles and longer shocks. I also might not be using the phoenix body.

Would it be worth getting the Phoenix, selling the portals & buying straight axles and getting a vfd twin? Or should I get the builders kit and re gear the front or rear axle for more overdrive?

I'm not really sure, but one thing i can almost guarantee is you'll be buying more than just this one rig. So don't put too much pressure on yourself on what to get...you'll probably end up with both down the line in some fashion:)

Any reason why you do not want the portals? No shame, sometimes I would rather have straight axles on some of my rigs too. Just curious.

If you arent planning to use the portals or the Phoenix body, that to me kind of loses its appeal. The wheels and tires are Ok I guess but you will be getting metal wheels and different tires eventually anyway...So really all you end up with is the VFD Twin.

In that case I would buy whatever kit you want that has the most parts you want to keep and use. Buy a VFD twin trans later maybe?

Buy the VS4-10 Phoenix RTR and run it till the wheels fall off. It has everything you want. If you are really itching to build it, take the RTR apart and “make sure” everything is greased where it should be.

If i was buying a new rig today it would be between the h10 kit, or the vs410 portal builders kit. The portal kit is great value with the fully upgraded twin trans. Adding that stuff later is not cheap. Rtr doesn't do anything for me these days (it's going to get a fusion either way), and I personally don't like the Phoenix body.
