Whats the deal rc4wd trannys

They seem like a good trans, IIRC they are geared a little higher than say an Axial trans. I think everyone uses the SCX/AX-10 trans because that is what they have laying around, and can get parts for at their LHS.

I personally like the rc4wd trans just fine. I have put mine through a ton of abuse and it still works well. I rebuilt it once right after I got it (used) and have never had another issue.

I had a two speed unit with a dig. The dig works poorly...only because it only engages every 180 degrees. Sometimes it has trouble locking into "dig" mode. Once its in, it works great.

The two speed was okay. The gear spread was not really worth it (more on this later). It did have difficulty engaging from low to high gear. The other way was just fine though.

Those things being said, it was tough. I was never really all that hard on it, but since it didn't always engage or lock as it was supposed to do, it didn't break. No gears stripped either.

I upgraded to a Traxxas Summit 2spd. Its gear separation is much wider. The drawback is that its big and heavy. I built a chassis with enough room to put the Summit 2spd on its side. With it on its side, it actually has a reasonably low center of gravity.

I don't have a problem with my Heavy Duty R1 tranny. Been running it on 3s with a 13.5 and now with a HH 27T for over a year. I like how compact it is.

I also drive sensibly (not like a *****, though). If I am in a bad bind—I don't hammer the throttle to get out.

I also have the 2-speed with dig. I don't have any troubles shifting between gears, and the dig works well for me. It's mechanical, so it does have to move to engage/disengage, but it pretty much just kicks ass. The common complaint is that the RC4WD trans is loud. Ohhh, it is.

One thing to note: the outputs are much higher than the stock Axial trans. This can cause some serious issues with the driveshaft angles, especially with the 2-speed or dig models that are double or triple the width to fit all the gears and such. I run an 11.5" WB and I can't use Axial or MIP shafts. Punishers are the only ones I've found that work at that extreme angle, and even that's pushing it. My front shaft is about to fall apart from the extra stress.
