Whats the point with the dig?

On the new Losi crawler, Losi has a Dig unit in the transmission. A plastic Dig. Now, Worm drive axles can not be reverse driven like Ring and pinion Gears. Since of this, Couldn't a disconnect be used at the tranny, and the locking be done in the axle? So their basically would not be a Dig unit, just a disconnect, and the rear axle lock on its own. :|

I was asking whats the point of the dig? Is it to keep strain off the worm gears?

It's just a disconnect for front and rear. Your brain is working correctly.

The output is solid steel. The inner part of the dig is P L A S T I C! wtf? No wonder they said, avoid shifting on the fly. DEFINITELY listen to them when they tell you this!

First off, worm gears can rotate in reverse. The dig unit disconnects the drive lines. There is no freewheel, per say. The worm axle locks with no rotational input. So you got three choices, 4WD, front axle driven, rear axle driven. The axle that doesn't have power applied doesn't move.

are you saying the truck does not run in reverse?

No, If you have a Worm gear spinning another gear, only the worm gear can spin 1st to make the other gears moved. You cant move the others first. Thats why you do not need engine break with worm driven axles. Now, since of this, if you spin your tires by hand you will end up breaking something because the worm gears don't work like normal gears. So my question was, why would you need dig if the axle locks on its own?

The "dig" unit in the tranny is not like what you are thinking, it is just a disconnect unit, the worms do the locking.

ahh! It looked like what was used in the DNA dig units.

The "dig" unit in the tranny is not like what you are thinking, it is just a disconnect unit, the worms do the locking.
