Where are you guys picking up the C channel that im seeing for scaler builds. it looks just like the SCX10 frame rails. The only ones that im seeing at the local hardware stores are either too big or just plain square steel rod. I can use the square steel rod but i think its just too damn heavy. It looks to be the right size though. Where are you guys getting this stuff.

As for myself, and I think it's the same for the majority, I get the 1/2" square steel stock from local hardware stores and cut it down the lenght to end up with 2 c-channels. If you bend it, do that before you cut it so that each side matches.

from what i have seen built. most people are using square tubing, bending the shape they want first and then cutting it in half to have 2 equal sides

I see that but some of the builds im seeing are using actual C channel instead of square stock.

-You start with the square tube.
-bend it to shape using heat.

-when you have the side profile you want, split the tube down the middle with a hacksaw, bandsaw, angle grinder...

This leaves you with two halves of a square tube (aka 2 C channels).

Thats how everyone does it, unless they're actually using the scx10 chassis rails.

Thanks for the editorial and now i must say, you must have one steady hand to cut a straight line down the middle using a cutoff wheel. Can i find that square stock at most hardware stores? Like i said, the ones im seeing are solid steel square tube. Maybe i should look harder huh?

I think using this material is the easiest way to make your own chassis. Some of the AL plates that im seeing seem complicated due to people tracing out the shock hoops and all.

If you can't find it at the local hardware, Lowes or HDepot, try a steel supplier in your area - I checked online and this place came up for your area:
Lakewood Pipe & Steel

10027 Artesia Blvd
Bellflower, CA 90706-6715

Thanks for all the replies. I just checked out OSH hardware and indeed they have the 1/2" steel stock. They also have all kinds of round steel tubing as well as brass tubing. Im gonna start something real soon!
