If you had no rocks, no mountains, no sand but only the occasional slop mud and few leaf covered hills and creeks, which set up would you prefer?

Currently running but looking for suggestions....
Truck- scx10 rubicon
ESC- Novak eiger pro
Battery 3s lipo 5k mah
Tires- 2.2 flat irons
Gears- robinson 87T with 17T pinion

Which moter should I go with???
A 540 can 55T, 27T, or 21T?
A modified 540 can in 35T or 21T
Orrrr a 17.5 brushless ss (old school touring motor, has no crawler mode available due to compatibility issues with the eiger pro) can on NIMH pack (since the eiger wont run 3s in brushless mode)
annnnd which pinion, 13t thru 20t? So lost in my parts not sure which road to venture down. TIA

Seems if you aren't really worried about low speed control for doing some crawling but might get into some mud then you need wheel speed more than anything really.

A 27T on a 2s or even a 3s will most certainly give you that wheel speed you would want.

Rather or not to go with a sealed can or a re buildable should be based on rather or not you can rebuild a motor or not.

If you have a motor lathe to turn the comm then most definitely go with a better quality re buildable

If not it will get pretty expensive replacing re buildable motors when the mud destroys the comm. ($35.00 or more per motor vs $10 $15 dollars for a sealed can motor...An Armature is roughly 20 dollars..then you need brushes as well depending on how bad they are...You can rebuild a motor about 6 maybe 7 times depending on its use before needing an armature...A motor lathe is a great investment if you can afford one.

As far as your gearing it sounds like its already geared more for speed with the taller tires you have..I use 87/16 with 1.9 flat irons and a 27T re buildable motor but its for both adequate speed and control on a 2s.

On a 3s it should be pretty good wheel speed with the 87/17 on your taller tires...Still check temps no matter what change you make to be safe.

Going down on tooth count will slow the speed down and help with low speed control.

Going up will increase your speed and decrease low speed control but now you have an over heating issue to watch for..so be alert of motor temps if you go up for more speed...Try an 18 and check..if its ok and you want more then try a 19 and so on...
