Winch wiring

This question might sound a little dumb but, will I need another BEC for the winch and winch controller? I am still not sure if I should run it off a separate battery or just connect it to the main battery.

had a local GA rock Zombies had a problem with wiring a RC4WD Warn Wired winch controller straight to the battery. couldn't handle the 11.1v and fried the controller. he said "It says 11.1 but it can't take a full charged 3s which is about 12.6."

not sure if that helps.
