From Havok... to BJv3... to just plain CHAOTIC!!

Hello to all. Lately I have been sending a lot of pm's to people looking for help/details on my build. I was told to start a build thread as my payment for the help. So here it is. I come from the 1:1 world, been doing that for 22 years or so. I have been lurking here for a while, so I guess I should get off my butt and contribute. I doubt I will ever comp this thing, but you never know. If you guys see anything that is suspect, chime in. I am here to learn!

I have been stockpiling parts and electronics for the last couple of months. I finally got to where I could at least put something together, while hoarding more for a real/complete build in the near future. I was running this for a couple of weeks or so, just trying to get the feel for such a heavy rig. I have had an RS 10 for the last 4 months or so, so this is a really different vehicle.

This is what it looked like when I got home this afternoon. My wife is out of town for the night with Sancho, don't worry it's ok, they took the kids too!:lmao:

Needless to say I got a lot done today. I made new plates using a used havoc (version 1) as my template. If you didn't realize the JP was missing you'd never know I made them.

I tore down the donor rig and started assembling the good one. I have chosen to run it with front torsion for the steering clearance. After starting with leftover links from other builds, I saw that there was a need for longer uppers in the rear. I love my drill...

I will trim the bottoms of the plates after I have run it a bit to make sure I really want the front torsion. When I got to this point (beers weren't helping) I thought, "Man I'd really like to see this run for a minute and see how it flexs on its own"

Took my electronics plate and zip tied it on top with a stick battery below. I went and ran it around on the rocks in my front yard for a bit. I know these things are stiff when they're new, but they will loosen up right?
I started making some chassis braces and getting ready to make my cab in the morning.

I can't tell, is this centered enough?

So in the morning I will start making my electronics and battery trays. Then the topper. Once I am happy I want to make all new links that look good.

Recap on the goodies:
Havoc (new plates once this is dialed, closer to the new version)
45t with 13/12 pinions, I think I'm going to swap them for a 11/10
Savox 1256
M2
Hacked Gt3b
SOON new steering linkage, this shit is whack!!

Oh yeah, the clocking jig you saw in the classifieds a couple of days ago is on it's way to its new home "thumbsup"

Here's what I think the cab may look like:

Is there a height requirement when running a bodiless like this?

Ok, what do you guys think? What can I do better, what should I change?

Looks good. I like the chassis topper design."thumbsup"

The torsion flex idea is interesting too. Please keep us posted on how it works out.

Ok. So I got it all together and have been having a great time with it. I even got a new place to wheel with it. We had a pond that we were just tired of dealing with leaks in the waterfall....pond no more! All that room, all that rock already sitting there. I am still going to rearrange it a bit, but it fits the bill for right now.

Sorry for the Redcat in the pic, but it was the best I took of the course.

ServoMount.jpg

Made a few changes since I started this thread. I have started playing with a standard set up on all four corners instead of the torsion style in the front I was using. It drives totally different, some of the things I could do before are a little harder now, but some things are totally better and easier this way.

I swapped to the light weight housings and knuckles, took all the black off of them. I am too lazy to polish them but they look way better silver than black anyway. I clocked the front tubes and built a new servo mount.

Last week I bought a new (to me) Chaotic Special from a member on here and can't wait to get into my hands. I hate the topper that comes with it so I will cut a new one that looks more like their Switch topper with the taller part mounted towards the rear of the chassis. I am still trying to figure out which premade Ti links to run for a Bully... But overall I am sure this thing will run even better and definitely look better. I still don't know what colors I will run for the panels but I kinda like the chrome color for them. Those may look pretty good with the Ti links.

Suggestions on links and colors?

I really like your servo mout. It is alot more space saving that mine is. Looks like it would make figuring out where to place the steering link alot easier.

So I started putting the new (to me!) Chaotic Special together and ran into some serious link geometry issues Saturday morning. I quickly decided that I was going to shelf the project until Chaotic got their Bully links done. Sunday afternoon my dad came by and reminded me that this weekend was the big annual deer trip. How the heck did I forget that?

3 days camping at 8000 ft.. I sold my 4Runner and I'm too cheap to buy a fishing license for the weekend. I NEED A RUNNING CRAWLER, STAT!!!

I had a BJv3 that I bought off the forum a month ago or so and wasn't really impressed with how it looked so I threw it off to the side and put it up for sale last week. Well, it never sold so after dinner I pulled it on the table and started looking at it again. 4 hrs later I had it together with new panels (wham bam thank you ma'am ugly panels), but at least it isn't all black anymore.

I took it out back to my play area and was floored at how well it ran. I was pretty sure that I had the Havok dialed as well as it was going to get, doing really well against some of the guys I have gone out crawling with. This thing did lines I could never have pulled off last week. I had to call it quits after 2 packs and go to bed. I had a 6a flight this morning to catch. I wish I would have gotten pictures of it last night, I have thought about that damn thing all day now.

Fully Chaotic now...

So, out with the old and in with the new they say. The BJv3 chassis, now in a box in the garage... The M2... gone! Replaced with dual Sidewinder Micros. I went ahead and smashed them to make them even smaller. That BJv3 was replaced with a new to me Chaotic Special and the 1st set of Chaotic Bully Ti links. :flipoff:

I ordered new panels so I could start with a fresh "new" look. The colors didn't really photo well. It was a red metal flake with a small ribbon of purple metal flake, with the other color a nice bright blue. I had some decals that I put on after this picture was taken.

Unfortunately, I was too excited to get on the rocks and didn't get any completed pictures until it had some rash on it

But I had a hell of a time yesterday with it at my buddy's. It was the first time on his pile o' boulders so I couldn't really tell how much better it was. They swear I was doing things the other chassis had no chance at. I will get it on my pile this weekend so I can get a real idea of what I gained.
