XV 01 parts package

Well I'm the newest of noobs to your amazing forum.

I am extremely new to RC cars, had the odd one growing up but always wanted to get more serious, that time has come. So for a Christmas present for myself the base XV01 rally kit looks to be the go. I have read quite a few posts in regards to equipping the chassis but need more help as I am getting a little confused. So in short, the base kit is not complete, I need an esc, transmitter, battery and charger etc.
I would prefer to get all of the extra requirements from one supplier, posting to Australia can get expensive. I have been looking around and Hobby king seems to be not a bad spot to start. I am not looking at spending a lot to start with, so only require cheap but good equipment, stuff that will get me by till I become more astute in my education. . So fire away with your thoughts, all help is greatly appreciated. Cheers

I don't really know what the RC scene is like in Australia. But Since you mention not spending a lot and post being expensive, maybe you should see if you can get lightly used electronics locally? Any local guys into RC that you know of? I'd hit them up and see if they have parts lying around.

Welcome! From what I can gather Australia has a RC rally following. I am not sure if they are in your area, but there are a few Australian members on this board. What Kirt said is a good way to go. Hobby King would also be a good option as well. I would go brushless with the car and get something between 4000- 5000kv motor & esc combo. They also have inexpensive radio combos and any 2 channel pistol grip 2.4ghz system will work for starting out. As far as a servo looking into something with a speed of .11 or faster. The quicker the better obviously, but the human reaction time can be only so fast. As far as torque with these cars 100+ ounces should be enough. Hope that helps with the start of your journey.

I also recommend 2 cell lipo batteries I just picked up some Turnigy 4000mah hardcase lipos and the fit very well in this car after that make sure you get a charger that is lipo capable and you will be on your way. The initial start up is a little expensive, but once you have all the electronics it really isn't too bad.

Hobby King is a very affordable option when picking up electronics. Get 2 or 3 batteries, a charger, transmitter/receiver, servo and a esc and motor combo and you will be on a good path to a solid car. You should be able to get all of that for under 200.00 from Hobby King.

Post in the Australia section in the regions section of the forum and see where the guys are located and ask about what electronics they are using, should help quite a bit. personally I don't use Hobby King electronics, so I am not a huge help in picking out particular items, but there are several guys who do. So maybe they will chime in and direct you to some particular items.

No worries.

I use Castle Creations ESC and motor, Futaba transmitter/receiver, Savox servo, and Turnigy (Hobby King) Batteries. A little bit more pricey then the basic stuff, but I also didn't buy it all at the same time.

And exactly what I use:
Castle Creations Mamba Max Pro esc
Castle Creations 5700kv Brushless motor (4 pole)
Savox 1251mg low profile servo
Futaba 4PL transmitter
Futaba FHSS receiver

Anyone know what the Toyota Gazoo body is like. Does it have a rear spoiler in the box?
I have found a kit from Stella with the Gazoo body or a Subaru kit from Dinball. Anyone able to offer there experiences with either reseller.

I'd say the Toyota 86 is more of a onroad rally car, than off road, but if that's your preference, go for it. No spoiler by the look of the pics from Tamiya

No probs with either seller (Dinball is the ebay seller of RC Mart - same company)

Edit - The suby isn't pictured with a spoiler, but does come with one. So who knows.... Looks like the other Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ models don't have a spoiler so my guess is still no.

You won't need the extra Onboard Alarm. ESC description says:

• Multiple protection features: Low voltage cut-off protection, over-heat protection, throttle signal loss protection and motor blocked protection

I actually just picked up one of those on board alarms. It was a couple dollars and gives me individual cell voltage and overall voltage of the pack, plus it beeps when the voltage gets low. For racing I think it will be really helpful so I can use more battery without having to worry about it.

Seems like a great setup to me. But I don't have much experience with hobbyking electronics.

Dinball ARE RC Mart. One in the same. Been using them for most of my RC stuff for more than 5 years. That said, Stella are fine too.

100% necessary! If you don't run one you will break steering parts and potentially strip the servo. I did both to my car before I put the Kimbrough servo saver on. Since then I have had no issues.

Plus I love that servo I have 4 of them all in different vehicles and have not had any issues.

Would the Tamiya 50473 suffice?

Eh... I think it comes with that one or something similar. Not sure if it has metal like that though.... The stock one is worthless and I have had really good luck with the kimbrough, thats why I recommend it. That Tamiya one I am not sure. If you can't get the Kimbrough I suppose it is worth a try.
