I've been wanting to build a rock racer/scale rig for a while now. Been collecting parts for a bit, still need a few things.....but it's time to start.

Building a rock racer,I figured it'd be best to start out with the best.

A scale version of one of the best 1:1 racers in the nation......

I called up Brian at RCP Crawlers and got a Bastard Jr. chassis along with a new molded hood sent over. I'll tell ya,these things are SWEET! Big props to RCP Crawlers and The Carnage Crew for designing these little chassis's.

I went to the shop today and built me a delrin skid and stainless steel links. I also did a little custom work on the wheels I have for this rig. Here's a couple shots of what I have so far.

Gonna work on it a little more tonight.

May try and modify my CVD's for the front. The diffs are off to one side. The shortside,is pretty dang short:lol: Really though, the stock Twin stuff turns plenty sharp anyway,so that's not really a huge concern. I had to put the diffs opposite to the real Bastard to work with the tranny. I'll have to put the tranny in so I can run front dig.

I'd like to run a 3 link, but will end up just going 4 link for simplicity. I'll do as much to scale as I can stand:lol: I'll give up some scale for performance since I wanna run this in comps some.

The puller motors I have won't fit. It'll have enough zip though if I can get everything worked out the way I want it."thumbsup"

I worked on the axles some tonight, gotta go by the shop in the morning before our comp to do a little work on them, then I can finish those up. I'll try and get some updates tomorrow evening.

im still shocked your doin a "scaler",,,what shafts you gonna run with the dig????

I wouldn't get to carried away with the "scaler" thing. Doing a super scale build definitely isn't me. It'll definitely have more emphasis on being a comp rig than a scaler.

I'd like to get my hands on a VP dig unit. I'm trying to get everything as small and as light as I can. Gonna try and just use dog bones for driveshafts.....small and beefy."thumbsup"

just bustin about the "scaler" comment,,i know your not a "scaler" nut...i like the idea about the dog bones,,but how would that work with the dig,,wouldnt at least the rear one need to telescope??

It might need to telescope, not sure how much though. Gonna give it my best shot. I have a few of the long cups that come with the stock Twin stuff, that may be the ticket."thumbsup"

A comp in January:shock:

Do you think Jato shafts would be beefy enough? I run them in my BL Slash, and they are just scaled down Revo's. Way beefier than the stock Axial's/Slash's.

So no doll driver in this one I take it:D

iirc the driveshaft stays the same length with the vp dig. no need for it to telescope

Good to know,thanks."thumbsup"

An indoor comp."thumbsup"

Jato's or Pede's might work as well.

And no....they'll be no dolls in this one.

No little jacks or jack stands:lmao:

Sorry to disappoint you Bart.....:flipoff:

So did you work all night on this thing? Cig in one hand Redbull in the other.

Got home late from our comp, did work some on the wheels I have for this rig. Waiting for the shop to warm up some,it's only 5 degrees outside right now. I wanna finish this thing, not that bad though. I'll get a few pictures later. I still need to order shocks, dig, motor and the battery. Then I can take the body panel down to get painted.

Gonna look good!! Are you planning on doing scale wheels now that your building a scaler? I really need some 1.9's!!!!!

Yes,it's a 2.2 build. Doubt you'd even get Twin knuckles in a 1.9 wheel.

One thing I've noticed,my camera sucks with indoor pictures. I'll try and get some better outside pictures when I get a little further along with the build.

The wheels that came with these axles were cool,so I figured I'd just use them instead of my own. They were a solid faced wheel, looked to be about a Berg offset with a 14mm hex and everything was black anodized. I wanted to add a little custom work to them to make them my own.....

After a little time in the index drilling the holes in the face and on the lathe fixing the bead grooves, this is what I came up with. I also made my own rings from delrin for these as well.

A few more mock up pictures. I noticed a few little tweeks I need to do on these axles still, but this is pretty close to how she'll come together. Hopefully in a week or so,I can get a dig unit and some shocks, then I can really go to town and finish up a few more things.

WTF! Not you too with the Iroks:shock:. You guys suck:mrgreen: Of course they are out of stock now. Those wheels are pretty cool. Nice Wheel Works custom touch:thumbsup: BTA steering even. Can't wait to see what you come up with there.

Edit: TGN was out of stock. Maybe RC4WD is now after my order:flipoff:

hahahahaha,,,ya had to pull the trigger,,,,,you ll be glad you did....

i like the 4 link mount on the rr axle,,clever idea...

Looking good Steve!8)
A smidge of advice, beef up the front upper linkmounts now or wait until they break after your third rollover ;) I just welded in some half washers and drilled a hole, very easy to do. I've had 2 of these awesome chassis now, and both broke on the first day out. Once I fixed the front upperlinkmounts haven't had an issue on either "thumbsup"
Looking forward to more progress 8)
