| 1:1 4 wheelers: Help/Advice needed
As some of you know, over the past year now I have been building an 86 4Runner. The truck was bone stock when I bought it and has come a long way in a short period of time. couple of quick specs: SAS 85 front axle, TG kit w/ 3" springs, 4.88s ARB air locker TG rear 3" kit, 4.88s locked 4.7:1 Tcase kit 5 speed The issue: Climbs over 30* I have learned a lot in a very short period of time and fully understand the "less lift, more sawzall, stuff biggest tire possible" Right now, when I try to make steep climbs the truck rips the left front tire sky high and almost pulls a wheelie. If it doesnt do that, it gets into a wicked wheel hop situation Not good... I have made a few trips to Raush Creek now and ALL of my buddies have cherocars with long arm kits and 35s and lockers and they are walking these steeper climbs and its frustrating the shit out of me. Climbs in which I am talking about are climbs like CV hill and trail 5 hill climb (for those that are familiar with the park) The issue I see is that my truck is possibly to high, it sits a few good inches above the cherocars I wheel with. I am considering pulling a leaf out of the front pack. and dropping the rear shackles down. I am also going to make a track bar for the back or purchase the budbuilt one. What I have noticed is that when I am on these climbs the front suspension unloads and then its pretty much down hill from there. weight biased unloads towards the back and its game over. once a strap it put on the nose and my friends keep it pulled down it climbs right up everything Here are a few pictures of my truck, let me know what suggestions you might have. I am sure a doubler would help to because I could be more gentile coming off the clutch...doubler is coming this winter...for now I just bought a 4xinnovations 4ric cage...Safety 1st! I was also looking at center limiting straps for the front, I was told if you run them in a X pattern that it wont limit my flex (my truck is mostly down travel) but wont allow the suspension to unwind in the front on the steeper climbs Here it is on CV hill, you can see it lifting that front left wheel and my internet is dieing at my GFs...will post additional photos later Last edited by 1BadJeepBruiser; 08-12-2010 at 12:44 PM. |

Welcome to leaf springs and torque twist.... Thats a part of it but the other is the fact of how the hosuing is walking forwards due to the nature of a leaf.... |

I would start by swapping the trail gear crap for Marlin's products.

Well now is a good time to ask this, seeing that this pops up from time to time. What is so bad out TG products? Is that there leafs sag? Or is everyone butt hurt that they under sell marlin and all pro? I have full marlin armor on my truck, bumpers and sliders and the 4.7:1 tcase kit...but there SAS kit was a few hundred dollars more then TGs. At 25 years old and only making 15.88$ at my dealership a few hundred dollars is a few more parts I can buy to make the truck better somewhere else. I already had to sell several of my RCs from my collection to fund this project... If there is really a reason that the TG stuff is causing my issue I want to know why...not that someone just thinks TGs stuff is shit

It's possible that the XJ's you see doing fine are heavier in the rear vs. your runner which would help with the wheel hop. Another thing to think about is that the runner is a framed vehicle where the XJ's are unibody. The twist in the frame could be helping twist up that front axle? In that first pic it looks like the rear axle is at an angle vs. the body. The passenger side seems more compressed in the rear, which could lend to the drivers front finding air. Maybe the rear is too soft and allowing the front end to twist up by means of the rear leafs? |

trac bar will help alot, get some good shocks, make some leaf spring clamp out of some 5/16th flat bar and run bolts through them and tighten them down they work real well compared to the ones u buy and that will make so the front and rear dont unload as bad we do it on my buddies buggy that is leaf sprung with a 60 and 9 and it makes a huge difference and if you can get a trac bar in the front than do it for sure Cody |

How is a track bar going to fix wheel hop and/or one front wheel coming up? Last edited by Offroader5; 08-12-2010 at 04:30 PM.

BTW...sweet runner. I'm looking at runners right now myself. I had a line on an '85 with only 70k miles and almost everything original...and in great shape. Couldn't get the $$ gathered quick enough and told the seller to go on to the next buyer in line |
