Toyota Flat Bed "Atomic Toy"

Since I started this whole crawling fad back in the day:lol:, I have always wanted a Bruiser cab rig with some sort of caged bed or flat bed. When I got my Hulk Werks prerunner a couple years back, I tried to make a Bruiser cab fit...didnt work. Over the past couple of years I have had other tube rigs, not ever designed for the Hilux cab and also tried to get a Hilux cab over them as well...never happened. Couple months back I saw Spicer18OR rig, and I thought "man that is exactly the type of rig I want" Even cooler was that it was leaf sprung front and rear. Well, when it turned up in the classifieds I PM'd him soon as I saw it when I woke up that AM...there was already 75 views and I was worried it would be gone but luck was with me:mrgreen: Sent over the pay pal and here it is now...

And I have for it so far...

Not sure about the Bruiser axles just yet, it has such a nice narrow track width I am not sure how it will look with the slightly added width.

They arent all that wide, probably the same as a high lift axle... I have to get some axle Cs on it and rear straight axle adapters so when i have them out I may slide the Bruisers under it and how it looks.

BTW How do you guys feel about half doors? Like Brandon did here...

Alright Bruiser axles were cool as shit but the I would have to reconfigure the trans to the opposite side of the truck from where it is now... So there out for now... Plus I want to run with this thing without any fear of breaking anything... Ill save the Bruiser axles for down the road on something else or maybe they will make there way back into it at another point...for now I am chopping the front axle up to add the Fat Rock Cs.

guamcrawler 08-13-2008 04:10 AM

good score "thumbsup" you always have the best rigs bought or built

G-crawler 08-13-2008 06:04 AM

Looks great! how about black tube doors? would match the rear tubework!

STANG KILLA SS 08-13-2008 06:14 AM

those do look nice...

Brandon 08-13-2008 09:13 AM

Bruiser axles + Half doors please!

jamesbernatchez 08-13-2008 09:50 AM

Nice Mike! It looks really clean. Can't wait to see what you do to it.

Dready 08-13-2008 03:16 PM

Bruiser Axles if they'll fit
One of your awesome interiors

Oh and the icing on the cake Cut the roof off"thumbsup"

You could continue the tubework over the gap to make a front cage.

Little Driver Dude inside.

Go on push the envelope

Dare you!

Well after thinking on it all day I decided to actually mount the Bruisers axle...painted them up and went to install them when...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...flatbed001.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...atbed002-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...atbed003-1.jpg

....I found the frame/leaf spacing wasnt the same as the Bruiser perches :x:x:x

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...atbed004-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...atbed005-1.jpg

Leafs and shackles were all twisted and the suspension was binding like whoa...so it will be a tlt axled rig after all. Cant say I didnt try.

Got the front axle back together, now sporting Fat Rock Cs
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...atbed006-1.jpg

Since I was planning on the Bruiser axles working, I swapped the drive train over to the passenger side so the transmission drive shafts would be in-line with the axles... doing this also allowed me to squeeze the interior in as well with a small skid plate drop using some of those awesome TLT spacers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...flatbed007.jpg

Glass is cut and in...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...flatbed008.jpg

and Rear is now sporting straight axle adapters.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...atbed009-1.jpg

My plan is to take it to work 2morrow, and during lunch, braze up some sliders (add to whats already there) or at least get the stuff bent and cut into shape

Question for everyone, do you guys think the flex is being limited by having 2 screws holding the High Lift leafs down? Should I maybe run regular juggs and drill out the center pin and use dinky mounts and just one mounting screw?

Thanks
-Mike

701 Technique 08-13-2008 10:41 PM

I pm'd Spicer for this rig that same day:-(

Glad to see you got it though, Like what you've done so far"thumbsup"

keep up the good work you lucky bastard:ror:

loftonww 08-13-2008 10:51 PM

Man this thing is alsome.

great job on the flatbed!!

Spicer18OR 08-13-2008 11:03 PM

from what i could tell the flex was limited by the hangers... the spring couldnt quite twist enough. i wasnt really driving it enough to have it bother me so i never fixed it(im pretty lazy most of the time)

Having 2 screws will limit your droop, just like those zip ties will, but the 2 screws shouldn't affect uptravel. I don't see any shocks yet but if you plan to have mostly uptravel then the 2 screws would be fine I think.

Tupers 08-14-2008 10:51 AM

This is looking better by the post, I hope mine looks as good when I finnish it. What do you think of the Rummy RC axles adaptors? I got mine in the mail today and they look awesome, I just need a set of axles to attach them to now.

RC_Addict 08-14-2008 03:49 PM

Nice"thumbsup"

The springs are twisting enough, I think the new springs will just need to break in some

Nicks parts are awesome, I am bummed I cant use them on this, they seemed so fitting for the truck. But at least I dont have to worry about the internals now.

Today at worked I got the rock sliders brazed up"thumbsup" I think they came out good

chino438 08-15-2008 12:46 AM

Grizzly4x4 08-15-2008 10:17 AM

The sliders look absolutely perfect Mike. "thumbsup"

ripper7777777 08-15-2008 12:12 PM

The sliders look great, very nice rig. The flat bed rocks and I'm a big fan of Orange.

chino63 08-15-2008 01:41 PM

Mike, your work keeps getting better and better. Great job so far! Will it keep up with my OG?

kaetwo 08-15-2008 03:36 PM

I need to put a clear windshield and interior in my rig. It looks 100X better on your rig.

What windshield would you recommend? I know that there is a guy in the UK that makes them but I've also seen a really heavy duty aftermarket shield that I thought was available through bruiser builder.

Rig looks amazing as usual "thumbsup"

Coming from you guys that means a lot, each build I am getting better and better with my tube work. These sliders came out so well I want to re do the ones on the clone now .

Dean I am going for a little bit more performance on this once, and now that the Bruiser cabs are available I wont be afraid to bash the shit out of this thing  I am sure this will be done by the next time we meet up and wheel together, then I can wheel with the best of you guys "thumbsup"

Yeah the orange is a very cool color, kinda like a burnt orange. I need to find out what color it is so when I do the half doors and stuff I can touch it up

I have scene the UK ones they are pretty nice but are definitely thinner lexan then the Bruiser builder ones. Problem is that Forrest was having Matt at scale hobbies make those for him and Matt has relocated and is just starting to get back into RC (been emailing with him recently). I am not sure if he will be offering the same services, I know he shut down his site.
