Toyota FJ40 Rock Crawler III

Started a "new" (I'm stuck on FJ40's) project to have something to do over the winter. This is where I'm at now:

This is about max flex. The shocks are RC4WD 100mm scale shocks. I might switch over to the 110mm ones to get a bit more flex.

The front. I left a little bit of the fender. I think it looks a little better than completely cut away.

I'll try to fit a proper size battery under the seats. I'm opting for a 2200mAh 3S or 2x 800mAh 3S. I think the height of the seats is still ok like this. What do you think?

I haven't chosen a single truck as inspiration this time, Robbob, but you are right, I've spent a lot of time on the Proffitt's Cruisers website. :)

The wheelbase of my build as it is now is 32,5cm/12.8in. I think I'll shorten it just a bit in the rear and will most probably end up close to 12,5in. The wheelbase of the Tamiya Landcruiser 40 body is shorter, around 26-28cm/10.2-11in, depending on how you position the front wheels.

An alternative to the RokLox's:

I think the Two Face tire looks nicer. I like the fat look. If only RC4WD made a tire with these dimensions but with a more aggressive thread pattern.

A comparison between the two:

Off to a great start.
Yeah, I gotta soft spot for the ol FJ40's too, mine will be around for a while yet.

x3! Only reason I would build something else would be to get a longer wheelbase.

Watching this one for sure! Nice work on the cage!

I like the look of the Two Face's on it. The Rok Lox will probably work a bit better but you see them on almost every rig on here.

Tomy 11-15-2010 01:15 PM

Started a bit on the cab interior. I needed a break from the tube work.

Here's the dash taking form.

http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/q...deos/toyt4.jpg

The seats got an own tube frame.

http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/q...deos/toyt3.jpg

The battery is located under the seats and the tube frame is held in place with small magnets, which makes it easy to remove when it's time to change battery. The battery box will get its own cover, also held in place by magnets.

I really like the way this FJ is shaping up. I like the seat tubing also.

I like the diamond plate flooring.

Tomy 11-27-2010 02:51 PM

Got the cage done today. :)

I just cut out the rest of the panels and did a quick test fit. Everything seems ok. The cage will be off for powder coating next week.

Thanks guys!

I expect to have the chassis back from powder coating tomorrow. So the rig should be running within a few days or so.

2manyprojects 12-01-2010 10:37 AM

Awsome build!!!!

Tomy 12-05-2010 02:38 PM

I didn't get the chassis back for the weekend. The powder coating shop had been painting white all week.

Did some work on the dash, though.

Nice instrument cluster. I see the odometer still shows 0 miles, since it is a new build. :lmao:

You are right :).

Now, looking at the dash on the picture, I see that the odometer is not fully horizontal, :x. A shame I didn't notice that befpre I glued it on to the dash.

Added a few more details. I'm still waiting on a steering wheel and will probably add some warning lights and a few buttons.

maybe I missed but how are you keeping the magnets in place? Great idea by the way and killer build.

Coming along nicely Tomy. "thumbsup"

I'm mostly using 4mm hydraulic tubing, which is fairly easy to bend. You can bend it in a wise for tight radius bends or use a tube bender. I'm still thinking of fabricating a tube bender of my own. In the mean time I'm using a cheap bender like this:

I got the chassis back powder coated today. I put on a layer of orange on select places and here's the result:

Nicely done, the orange and back tube work look awesome! Looking forward to seeing more pics of it, hopefully outside.
Keep up the great work !

Tremelle 12-09-2010 04:52 PM

That is just plain sexy. It is coming along nicely.

Tomy 12-09-2010 10:19 PM

Thanks!

I'll have to wait with outside pics till the spring. There's only snow outside. :x

Next I'll move on to the remaining panels, a fuel cell, some scale accessories and an aluminun roof.

Wild trial 12-10-2010 09:00 AM

Damn,,,that look awesome. "thumbsup"

I did some shading on the panel lines of the hood. I'm not fully there yet, but I think I'm heading in the right direction.

Any tips and tricks on how to do this are much appreciated.
