PinchFlat’s MSD Scale Nats TTC Entry - Sami Buggy

Well it’s time for a TTC build for the 2011 MSD Scale Nationals.

As happens quite often Kaetwo & I got together to figure out what we are going to build and enter in the MSD Scale Nats TTC this year. We decided on 2 main considerations for this build. First was we wanted a build we could use locally in our UTRCRC Mod class. Second we did not want a HUGE rig this time around and with the new 4.75 1.9 tires now available we decided they would be a perfect start for our builds.

So TTC/Mod rigs with 4.75 1.9 wheels was the plan. Now what “body” to base our build on? Jeep? Bronco? FJ40? D90? Blazer? Scout? Toyota? An F-Toy even? We really couldn’t decide until Kaetwo came across an image of a KOH style buggy based on a Samurai from a few years ago. The problem was it was a small, semi-grainy image and we couldn’t find any other images of the vehicle. So we still kept looking for an idea. We kept coming back to the cool little Sami buggy thing. Eventually we said screw it, lets just build the funny little Sami the best we can from the tiny, un-detailed photo. We downloaded tons of other Samurai based buggies, trail, & street rigs of all kinds. We needed an idea of how people had built cages and such for a 1:1 Sami rig so we could fill in the gaps of the one crappy picture we had for our reference.

Here is a link to Kaetwo's MSD Scale Nat's TTC sister build thread: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/1-9-scale-rigs/306463-kaetwos-montana-ttc-entry-sami.html

We're also approaching the TTC event with a different mind set. Last year it was all about the HUGE rigs, this year Kaetwo and I are hitting things up from the small side and running the RC4WD 1.9 Baja Claws. The rigs will be incredibly light, fast, nimble, stable, high scale points and most of all an absolute blast to drive. With TTC it's all about building a rig that will win the most courses, and last year Kaetwo and I tried to build a well rounded rig....not the best strategy in our opinion. Now don't get me wrong, I finished 5th and Kaetwo I think finished 3rd, but this year where going for the 1, 2 spots. I think with these builds we have grabbed the golden ring and we will be surpassing a lot of people and causing them to rethink their ideas of a TTC rig. (or they could completely fail :ror:. I guess we will see)

So we had the opportunity of the rare boy's only build weekend and went to work. Basically we kicked the wives & kids out and built for 3 days straight 16+ hours a day...a building marathon. It was mentally exhaustion really, but a blast. There is still a ton of work to do, but I think overall there turning out really well. I’ll have some pics from the initial build weekend up later today.

Here is the reference picture we are using:

So with a wicked build like this, we needed a wicked name and being that every year in Montana the Utah boys have been referred to as the Utards...its only fitting to pass that name onto these bad boys. I came up with a kick ass set of grills that I think will totally set them off.

Kaetwo may have some more detailed pics of the build weekend, but here is a pic of what we ended up with after the three days of building. (Mine is on the left but they are virtually identical so it doesn't really matter.)

Finished & painted cage pics soon.

badd @ss chassis!!

a few years ago I won a D90 tuber on ebay and on the side was a UTRCRC sticker. I wondered what kinda life she had before me (lol)
a few years later after i had sold it, i see the same rig in an MSD nats vid on youtube and i knew i never should have sold it. it was prob the most capable scaler ive had. Do you remember the truck? Howd it do at the comp?

maybe ill get my hands on the new one once you're done with it;-)

Oh yeah the CT2000... That is either the first or third cage I ever built. (I built a super tuber & a 2.2 tuber that same year I can't remember what was first). I know I came in the top 10 with that at the 2008(?) MSD Scale Nats.

yea i think around 2008 sounds right. man that thing was heavy but near unstopable. I bet its still floating around new england somewhere

Yawn......

For someone that sent the family away and worked for 3 days on these rigs.....the progress is pretty slow .

Some pics just for you Tim (oh and metal integrated shock mounts on this one :ror: ).
Some painted shots of the cage. I may have rushed the paint a bit so it may get sanded and re-shot. So after I do that I'll get to making it a roller. Then a 3D interior, body panels, scale details, electronics etc... Damn I still have a lot of work ahead.

That looks really good all painted up.....nice job.

The shock hoops are OK.
