| My OG Hilux build....
Well, for some time now I have been looking at all of these amazing hilux builds and have been wanting to build one. But every time I start, I some how end up with a JK in 1 form or another. (Check out my other 2 jeep's here on the forum) Anyhow, today I got a MAJOR score from a buddy of mine in the group. a OG 1980's Tamiya Hilux body! I have not seen one of these on here in a very long time. No, I will not bore you with the build of the cassis... It's just a SCX-10 with a chassis mounted servo.... Now.. Time to strip the old 80's paint off and time to start filling some holes!! Last edited by msd44; 09-30-2011 at 09:26 PM. |

| Paint Removal...
Well, this is going way faster then I thought. THis is about 3 min. of work with nail polish remover. ( Target brand non-acetone) Turns out living in a house with 3 females *my wife, and 2 daughters* is working out in my favor! This from just the nail polish remover and a wet micro fiber cloth! |

Well.. that was way easier then anticipated..... And the bed... I am not gonna try and strip the bed, at most I am going to fill in some holes that are not needed, paint it black, and keep it they way it is. I just can not bring my self to cut into such a beautiful body just for a drop bed.... Last edited by msd44; 09-12-2011 at 05:59 PM. |

2 problems that I see if I wanted to attempt a drop bed.... 1) I have some skills at body work. Kinda cut my teeth when I built my JK Truggy.... 2) Not sure how $$$ those things are, and if they would fit on the bed of a original hilux body.

Not sure if I want to keep the flat irons on it or not... I have a line on some 1.9 TSL's.... but as for now.. They will stay. As far as paint, I am not sure. I am kinda leaning to painting back the way it started, Red with Yellow and Orange stripes... but I am not sure. Any suggestions?

Just a quick update: Not much has happened as of late. I have been putting in some serious hours at work. Basically I filled in some holes in the body and fixed a small crack in the front bumper. So.. After looking at this work of art sitting on my work bench... I have finally succumbed the the peer pressure. I'm gonna take it to the next level, and am gonna make it a drop bed. And here I was thinking this was gonna be a easy build. What was I thinking? Anyhow... Need some help here. Any and all detailed images of drop beads would be appreciated. Also, some pics of the real 1:1 (preferably of the same bed as the one I am building) I would like to keep it as realistic as I can. |

Just a small update for now. Just have not had much time on my hands as of late with work and family stuff eating up a lot of my time. As you can tell... I have taken the advice of several people, and have decided to do a drop bed. Wish me luck! I'll keep everyone posted on how this one goes..... |

Just a quick update. I know I am starting to sound like a broken record, but work has kept me form doing much when it comes to this rig. Got the front bumper painted. Painting that Toyota emblem sucked.... Got the cab painted as well. Couldn't resist on putting it some what together. Got a drop bed kit today as well. Hope to have some time this weekend to get some solid time to work on this thing. I will update as time allows! Last edited by msd44; 09-27-2011 at 08:11 PM. |

Well...here is another quick update: Got the drop bed (Rouge Elements hilux bed) yesterday from a great guy here on the forum (Big_DaWgZ... Thanks again buddy) and got a chance to dry fit it all together. Super nice kit that I would recommend to anyone out there that can get ahold of one. Very sturdy just being held together with painters tape! (sorry for the shitty iPhone pics) As it was going together, I was thinking that this was a little large Compared to my OG Hilux bed... Once I was done... I laid them down together... Fawk me there is quite the size difference!!!! So...... Now do I cut into this amazing bed and attempt to make it fit??? Or..... Do I buy some styrene sheets and start attempting to make a drop bed of my own..... So... Some what disappointed... I pulled out some paint and started work on some small detail stuff.... Well... I got a 3 day weekend this weekend... So... Let's see what kind of progress I can make! |

Well, made some head way today. Got the cab's details done... and ready to mount. I was not to thrilled with how the "Toyota" emblem had turned out the first time... so... I went ahead and repainted it. From their I went ahead and applied the stripes.... Now that is out of the way.... It was time to decide what to do about a drop bed. I kept going back an fourth about cutting up my Rouge Elements Drop Bed, seemed like it would be a somewhat easy job to do. But the more I thought about it, the more complicated it would be to keep everything lined up with the amount of "shrinking" I would of had to do. So... off to the hobby shop I went... A few sheets of 2mm styrene, and some plastic weld. I am using the Rouge Elements bed as a "Template" on how to make this thing. (Far as I am at the moment.) It's not gonna be half as detailed as the rouge one... but hey. At least I am making it! |
