Default The Hacker

This is my first attempt at brazing, hence naming it the Hacker. I have had my Smith Mini set-up now for like 4 months but had yet to get started due to a new addition to the family....our first baby.

I found out ever so quickly its not the brazing that is difficult especially if you have soldering skill. It the bending and measuring that is a bugger to get down. I was struggling on figuring out how to measure when bending.

I am now starting to get the hand of it after 1 full rod of tube and 2 full rods. I am really digging it now that I am working thru the frustrating part.

Here is my progress. Of course I started on the bumper/stinger first...not the smartest move.

I think the other parts might be a bit easier.

progress....a lot of tubes gave their life today for this. Man I thought I got so much done. I am getting faster though. I have not had so much fun building in a long time, maybe ever. Good stuff.

Started the inner cage and rock sliders. Also shaped the rear wheel wells.

Nice work, the Mickey tires and those wheels look perfect for that body.

Thanks Ty I hope it all pans out. I was just looking at the interior and a transfer case will be a must due to the limited space. It will be my first time with one. I also need the trim the front of the fenders....even though I really did not want to. They just have way to much of a downward grade on the front of them.

I built a scaler with the same body a couple years ago and instead of trimming the fenders I heated them up and flattened them out a little. You might want to give that a try before you chop them off.

As far as the transfer case it can be a pain making a shaft short enough to run from the tranny to the T case. The biggest thing is plan accordingly for the shaft.

I wish you luck, it can be a PIA sometimes.

I mounted the axles up so I could make some links and gage where to make the rear shock mounts. I moved the tranny back about a inch and plan to flip it. This will give the needed space to do my interior.

After making the links I was able to accomplish about the same length as say a stock honcho. I like the height as well so I will shoot for that. I still have a lot of work but I wanted to post these progress pictures. I still have some tube work yet to do but that has been my fav part. I absolutely love brazing and bending. Its the closest I have ever come to doing custom fab stuff other then cutting stuff with the dremel and drill and tapping links and such.

Here are some pics of how she is sitting....gotta love the approach...nothing getting in the way there.

I was looking at the pics. I will have to get some when the body is mounted. I brazed nuts but still need to cut holes. The rock rails and everything will line up perfect. I noticed that a couple of the pics the rails dont line up but they will when everything is mounted.

Also got this in the mail yesterday. The whole reason I went ahead with this build for my first. I had the body already sitting around too.

This is not mounted yet just a couple pics from Chris at Rogue.

This is how it looks with the back lighting...
