I hate running out of steel...

...this far into a build.

I knew I'd be cutting it close, but I kind of thought I'd be able to cut one last piece out of what little material I had left. No luck. :-(

Everything is straight, there's just some distortion in the images from the wide angle lens.

chaotic_life 09-24-2006 07:56 PM

I hate when that happens! It looks sweet though... can't wait to see it finished... :)

madhatter 09-24-2006 07:56 PM

nice to see some one mod'n one of these already

RD400 09-24-2006 07:59 PM

That sucks, I knew there was a reason I over buy all the time:lol:. Nothing could be more of a MoJo killer then running out of material on a Sundat night.

Got Rocks? 09-24-2006 08:07 PM

that is my favorite high lift

rocpede 09-24-2006 08:31 PM

microgoat 09-24-2006 09:07 PM

Lookin' sweet :D Shame about running out of steel. I'm surprised you're running the shiny diff covers, the way they hang down they'll hang up like the proverbial buck teeth. I'm thinking the rubber plug option would be more rock-friendly.

But they sure look good, don't they?

Looking forward to seeing the rest of this build.

JasonInAugusta 09-24-2006 09:10 PM

I'm not going to use the covers when running. Haven't ran it yet, still building.

It'll have covers while sitting, plugs when running. ;)

The flatbed thing is totally removable and won't require anything on the truck to be modded for it to work/fit.

The bed is made from 16ga steel, so I'm might need to build a new rear leaf pack for it.

dezfan 09-24-2006 09:14 PM

Looks great JIA! The "work bed" is going to look incredible!

I watched one crawl today at Capen. Crawled alot better than I thought it would and the tranny is sweet!8)

Looks good man, there are sure going to be some awesome high lift builds coming up now!

Just can't leave stock alone can you?

badger 09-25-2006 10:42 AM

I can't wait to see this one finished!

EeePee 09-25-2006 11:15 AM

Well, that's kind of cooler than mine. Ya jerk.

Looks great JIA.

JasonInAugusta 09-25-2006 01:04 PM

Got a little bit done before heading to work.

I designed the bed to be wide enough to allow use of the stock damper brackets and dampers so I figured I'd open up a slot to clear these parts.

That's why I like working where I do.We have hundreds of feet of 3/16 x .02 wall laying around. Now I just need to get around to building a tuber.:)

STANG KILLA SS 09-25-2006 08:43 PM

why not aluminum?

JasonInAugusta 09-25-2006 09:09 PM

Ever try using a MIG on alum?

TwistedCreations 09-25-2006 09:11 PM

yes I have, it works pretty good once you change wire and switch over to 100% argon :flipoff:

The AP bed looks pretty good JIA, nice work as usual.

Are you planning on doing the back bars the same also, or just using the basic shape of that bed?

JasonInAugusta 09-25-2006 09:17 PM

I haven't, and even if I did, there's no argon here.

Tack and braze...works well for me.

Yeah, I figure once I get the other cutout for the shock done I'll start the tube work...have to. The rest of the bed is based around tube.

For those wondering what AP bed means, here's a shot of what I'm loosely basing this around. Pretty much what Badger's Mounty bed is based on.

microgoat 09-25-2006 09:28 PM

Now that's gonna be sweet :D

JasonInAugusta 09-25-2006 10:30 PM

Made a boneheaded mistake.

After I'd finished the first cutout in the bed for the shock and shock mount I made a template for the other side.

Made a reference mark, put the template in place, marked the bed, and commenced cutting.

The bad thing is I made the reference mark on the wrong side of the frame rail.

http://projecttwin.com/files/350/flatbed/10.jpg

Looks like I get to patch the hole now.

JasonInAugusta 09-25-2006 11:47 PM

Patched the hole.

Debating firing my machinist.

http://projecttwin.com/files/350/flatbed/11.jpg

So now the main box is in place, time for all the extra crap.

1BadJeepBruiser 09-26-2006 08:23 AM

Looking sweet dude, this is definitely going to be one of the baddest High Lifts around 8)

Mike

Unimoger 09-26-2006 08:49 AM

great work JIA, love the AP bed, badger's rig has inspired many of us.;-)

JasonInAugusta 09-26-2006 08:23 PM

Thanks guys.

The added weight of the 16ga steel has created a need for a stiffer spring pack on the rear.

I figure once I'm completely done with the bed I'll retune the suspension.

Until then it'll probably keep the soft pack.

YEP! my millermatic 251 has a spool gun with .030 just for alum

JasonInAugusta 09-26-2006 10:53 PM

Bah!

I've never attempted welding alum...maybe one day.

DISTURBIN' tha PEACE 09-26-2006 11:18 PM

I have, TIGing. First bead was nicer than each succesive one. Not too easy.

If you can braze (which I know you can) TIG isnt much harder, just takes practice 8)

sicj 09-27-2006 06:48 AM

looks great! This is exactly what I was going to do to my High Lift....if I bought it. Only thing I'd change is the plastic shock towers in favor of some custom 3/16" tube hoops.

nice 8)

Shock towers are pressed steel ;-) Although some hoops would be cool

Well you could build a diff cover, that would realy make it stay unscratched

You could get out the mig and weld it shut, then get out your grinder and do it again
