Class 2 toyota "clone"

.

I started off like my other truck with some 1/2" square tubing bent to shape.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps23cc14cc.jpg

Now it says in the title that this is a clone but there will actually be some deviations to my original truck.

First is the drive train a Dinky tranny\T-case set-up. The skid is designed to fit in an SCX10 chassis so i drilled the rails to match.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc66604a8.jpg

then split them

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps16308513.jpg

The problem with the Dinky skid is that it is designed to go inside the rails. i used a stock SCX10 skid in my bronco and hated that i had to notch out the rails to remove the skid. so this time i added plates to the inside to allow the skid to be removed easily once the who chassis is complete.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps976af15a.jpg

the fit was good so i burned them in.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps8a26bd40.jpg

I'm out of practice with the TIG, it didn't turn out as good as i hoped. when i filed it down it wasn't perfectly smooth. i'll take care of that later.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4fdb6178.jpg

The skid bolted up well

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps22f05d6a.jpg

next i drilled some holes for the tranny, mounted it, and bolted up a spare set of axles using stock Dingo rear links and custom fronts.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3d9b2f47.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...pscd3223f0.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps549ee6ec.jpg

the tranny is nice and lever with the frame

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psadda6088.jpg

the problem with the tranny is that there is only one mounting hole on either side. Now the bosses that slid into the frame are angled but are not a tight fit at all and it cannot hold up to the leverage of the motor

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5740e637.jpg

More on that later

Next i wanted to tackle the front linkage, wanted to be able to run either a 3 link or 4 link so since i had a Hands Brothers 3 link already on the axle i made the single upper.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps66287af6.jpg

Then i threw some wheels and tires on and got it to an approximate ride height.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps561fe782.jpg

then i tacked a tab in place for the panhard bar.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps08c5698a.jpg

fits pretty good

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psfce6736e.jpg

Now to tackle the tranny. i made up some tabs to add another mounting location.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf0bc0c0e.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc431bd4c.jpg

then tacked them to the chassis

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psec3a511a.jpg

being that there is no other mounting options i simply drilled and tapped some new ones.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps182818c5.jpg

now it's plenty secure

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3b710f5f.jpg

Oh and one last thing. i did a quick mock-up of the body

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps7d137a10.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psaa5857ba.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps936be1e9.jpg

And if you are wondering, Yes it will have a drop bed and yes it will be all aluminum like my class 2 truck! "thumbsup"

More later

Very nice! Looks like yet another quality build. How do you go about splitting your tubing for the frame? Bandsaw? Cutoff wheel? Butter knife?

Sub'd! I always like watching your builds! Especially when they get all "mashed" up and look that much more like most of the yota's I see on the trails lol

It was time to get this thing standing on it's own. i starting by bending up some hoops out of stainless tube.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps7607fd87.jpg

Then for the rear i made some plates. since the tube is going to be stainless i'm going to try to make all the other parts stainless as well.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3254afce.jpg

then i tried something diferent and attempted to braze the plate in without tacking it first but it was an epic failure as you can see with the one on the left.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc937cbf6.jpg

If you are wondering why the tube was cut unevenly this is why. with the truck having a full drop bed but running a 4 link i needed a place to put the hoops that wouldn't take away from the bed floor. so i decided to lean them forward to try to keep the tires out of the shocks.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps30dd4d4c.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3e25cc13.jpg

And to keep the hoops under the fenders

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa1e21f76.jpg

Next it was time for the front. I started by making some tabs for the shock

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psef51a538.jpg

Then the hoops were trimmed and the the tabs were mounted along with the lower mounts

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf474ea1e.jpg

then they were tacked to the chassis.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps7857a906.jpg

The last thing i did was add a rear cross bar.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa17c5347.jpg

It's finally standing on it's own

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps9c52d516.jpg

If course the mandatory flex shot "thumbsup"

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4efcd3fc.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps54fd7e06.jpg

then with the bed in place

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps40ad311b.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4b88b6ea.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5ed7c12e.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse0fe1fd0.jpg

More to come!

Re: Class 2 toyota "clone"

Thanks!

Well i have been working on this but i just haven't had time to post progress. So here is an update.

Once i had the chassis situated, i decided to lock the front in place with a cross member.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps508e208e.jpg

Fit is nice and should be real clean once i braze it.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps195f7d9f.jpg

The i moved onto the rear. i decided to give it a better departure angle and pie cut the chassis.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc7f75520.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps7a760787.jpg

Then TIG'd it shut

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps9c41a9f3.jpg

and ground it smooth.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psed4971da.jpg

then i needed to make the bed mounts. i bent up some sheet metal first

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps176bd8c4.jpg

Then tacked then in place

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...pscbaab3b1.jpg

for the front mount i used some sliced square tube and added the serial number to make it official

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps037f3917.jpg

And tacked it in

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps32b54070.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps20c205a4.jpg

now it was time for some fresh panels starting with the bed floor and inner fenders

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5f453f17.jpg

then i made some supports and fastened them to the frame

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd58038e5.jpg

and glued the bed floor down

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps04bd57ed.jpg

Now with a clean bed floor for reference i was able to start on the cab. I formed the roof, cab back and B pillars and glued them together

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps97252a29.jpg

then positioned it on the chassis

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc5b9823a.jpg

then i was able to make the sliders

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps331b4f98.jpg

and add them to the chassis

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps598b22fe.jpg

Next came the rear hoop

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psbd759e12.jpg

it was added as well.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4f1bc834.jpg

test fit the cab skin again and all looks good

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps510c2ac5.jpg

then i added the tubes in front to secure the sliders

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5d721b25.jpg

finally i bent up the rear bumper

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf5115311.jpg

and tacked it to the chassis

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps6044e3bd.jpg

keeping it in the same plane as the cut to the frame rails.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...psfc01d898.jpg

That's it for now!

After 7 months of anticipation it arrived yesterday and im speechless! I even got a complete spare body set.... I decided to go a stockish color for this first body and i will do some black yota stripes.

I also think for the moment im gonna use these 1.55's untill i can find some 1.7 iroks, i have some new 1.9 tsl's i planned to run but at the ride height i want they may be a bit big and will mangle the fenders

For now its gettin axial axles i have the DDK setup in it with all Robinson internals, HH 35t torquemaster, 90mm icons, MMp or brxl (not sure yet), and i just ordered the winch and the grill
