Steering servo, How big?

I went to slightly larger tires and (1.9 rims) on my TRX4 and it has become obvious the stock steering servo is not adequate. I like to crawl and do Competitions, 1.9 XL.

I am not sure how far I will go with the build but a new servo is necessary. I have seen fast steering servos on rigs that do a lot more than just steer the vehicle, being able move the front end over and avoiding the need to back up seems very advantageous.

I have seen servos up to 400oz, I realize I will need the appropriate BEC setup. I don't want to spend more than I have to but I don't want to try to save a couple bucks only to end up revisiting this on down the line. If I go with even bigger tires and want fast powerful steering is it overkill to get a 400oz servo? If so what size should I consider?

You can either add a BEC to the stock ESC or you can buy a HobbyWing WP 1080 ESC which has a much better internal BEC.

The Savox 1230 servo offers 500 oz-in at 6V for around $70.

It actually only pulls 20kg or 290oz-in but that is more than enough for me on a 1.9 rig with XL tires. And it's only $38 on amazon

You'll never wish that you had LESS torque from your servo, so I would strongly suggest getting the most powerful servo that you can afford... but do your due diligence on the particular model's reliability/track record as, unfortunately, there's a lot of over hyped garbage out there. The question comes down to: what's your budget?

I personally have a cheapish JX 46kg servo on a 4.75" car, 470oz on another 4.75", cheap 20kg MG958 on 4.19"s, a different cheap 20kg (DS3218Pro) on 5.4"s, Promodeler 420oz on 5.5"s, Savox 2290sg 700oz on 6" tires, Futaba A700 1,027oz on 5.75"s, all of them suit their use/application. I only wish that I had skipped all the cheap crap with big claims on my 2.2" big tire cars, would have saved me money in the long run.

That is how I see it. I am new to RC cars and there does seem to be allot of China crap.

As I search around a few names come up as some one to trust. Castle, Holmes, Savox and Traxxas. I know Traxxas is the big guy and often hobbyist like to deal support the under dog but Traxxas seems to make it simple. Holmes is sort of local to me so if things can be made simple (and what I want) they would be my top choice.

Is something like this a good way to go?

If you want the absolute best, go with the Holmes servo. It runs off the battery voltage so no BEC needed. 580oz-in off a 3s battery. It's an absolute Beast!

You can get better servos for the same price as that Traxxas servo. The Savox 2290 would be a better choice IMO.

That looks good but I have 2S batts, a BEC would be more $$$ effective than new batteries. Do you know if it run of a BEC and 2Cels?

It also says water resistant, not water proof. Traxxas claims water proof. I do you it around in the woods and water happens.

The Savox 2290 does not claims to be water proof, but other do . They seem to want about 8 volts. The traxxas setup I believe is 6 volt.

Waterproof isn't important to me. I've only ever killed one servo due to water and that was after totally sinking a truck.

That Savox 2290 works fine on 6V.

The 2210 is also a good servo. It won't be as bullet proof as the 2290, but for most people that's not all that important anyway. The 2210 should be perfectly fine for a TRX-4 with 1.9" wheels and tires.

I've got the very popular Savox waterproof 1210SG on my Axial Bomber with 5.5" tires and it's more than enough power. Pretty good stats and good value. Only complaint is it's pretty loud.

That one seems good but 7.4 volt. With the Traxxas BEC it seems to plug inline and limnited to 6 volts because of other electronics in the TRX4. The other BEC don't seem to operate like that so you can run more voltage. But you may lose some functions in the ESC such as on/off no big deal but what about the other modes and battery choice options? Will the other BECs make it so I can't change modes? I like crawler mode for crawling and the default one for trails. What about the low voltage indicator for the Lipo batteries? Is this the case?

Info is from the Asian guy on RC review. It watch his videos. I am new and looking for knowledge. It seems even at 6 volts the starts are good on this servo and I cold use the Traxxas BEC amd retain everything with the ESC.

Don't take some YouTube guy's word for it. Go right to the manufacturer.

I don't use Traxxas servos, but I've never felt Savox servos don't live up to their advertised specs.

I understand I need to be careful with info but at some point you have to trust some one. As far as the people on You tube he seems knowledgeable.

There are two RC stores that are somewhat close to me and there seems to be a bit of bad blood between the two of them. One recommends one thing the other hints at why it isn't a good choice. I will also seek out their advice/recommendations and look for consistencies.

So far I can not find reasons not to get the Traxas BEC and Traxas servo or the Traxas BEC and the Savox waterproof servo. I am more worried about ease of installation and dependability than 20 or 30 bucks.

That looks good, a little slower but more power. I have seen when the RC crawler is stationary and by turning the front wheels back and forth quickly it can point the car in a different direction. That is something else I am hoping to achieve.
