Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug I've picked up a 3D printer and am working on 3D printing an engine for a new Bug. A Sand Scorcher on MST rails with bits of this and that for the rest of the chassis. Here where I am at the moment with the engine. Here's the printer. It's an Anycubic Mega-S. Upgraded it to Marlin 1.1.9 firmware with its mesh bed levelling and added a 0.2mm nozzle as well. Other than that it's stock at the moment. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66725.jpg Some of the parts printed so far. The white rods are 1mm styrene. To put costs into perspective one cylinder cost $0.02 (Canadian). http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66724.jpg Here's some of the rejects. Parts that failed mostly because I was trying to get a new printer dialled in. Trying to print the tiny air cooling fins on the cylinders and cylinder heads is pretty difficult as they are so so tiny and thin. Pretty happy with things so far. Still experimenting with settings though. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66726.jpg Cheers eh, Todd |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Here are the chassis rails and transfer case.. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66727.jpg I'm using the Boom Racing BRX70 axles. They are as narrow as. How do you like that minimalist chassis? http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66728.jpg Here's the body on the chassis with Boom Racing wheels and tires as well. Also narrow. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66729.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Also got some 3D printed parts from Shapeways. A dashboard by Scorched Parts. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66730.jpg And a louvered rear sun shade by Junkyard Stance. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66731.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Bug Build"thumbsup"! The 3D prints are sharp |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Damnit.... Now I HAVE to get a 3d printer before I start building my scorcher........ Thanks a lot. Looks great, I am real impressed by those Micro Aircooled parts. Jealous. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Thanks and yeah go get one. They’re getting cheaper all the time. It’s getting easier to do all the time but they still require a bit of fiddle farting around to get them to work right. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Very VERY impressed with this.. that motor is special. Looking forward to more. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Thanks Mike. This is the same engine stl file that's in my Carisma Bug but shrunk down a bunch to make it fit the Tamiya body. It's going to be a slow build. Winter is long here. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug wonderful Build so far! So nice to be able to print.... I need a dash for my build......"thumbsup" |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Wow, awesome work on the engine! |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Amazing engine, I can’t believe it even has a fan inside the shroud. Where did you get the stl from? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Nice prints! Impressive that the fins look so thin yet still good! I love this. I need to build a Scorcher body rig. Does the Scorcher body differ from the Blitzer Beetle or Monster Beetle bodies? |

Not sure about the other bodies. Never seen either. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Sweet project! I also have a Scorcher project in the works. I picked up the same rear window louvers from Junkyard Stance, I couldnt figure out what else to do for the back window. For those that dont know the scorcher never included a rear window with the body kit. What chassis is that? RC4WD? How narrow are those axles wheel to wheel? I went for narrowed SCX10.2 axles from Beeftubes and got about 8 1/4" wheel to wheel on some narrow tires. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug I’m working on an MST CMX chassis but trying some different ideas for a transmission. The axles are narrow! 148.5mm pin-to-pin (5.846 inches). Here’s a link to them. They’re about perfect for this body. Here’s a top view. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...547-66735.jpeg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug I also got narrow wheels and tires. Started with 1.55s and then I found some 21mm wide 1.9s at Boom Racing. I like them a lot. What I don't like is that my 7mm driver doesn't fit. I need a thin walled driver or have to use the goofy tool that came with the wheels. Tires are also Boom Racing. 3.6" X 0.94". Small and narrow as you can see here. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66736.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug By the way, I used the same stl file to print an engine for my other Bug but it's a lot closer to 1/8 scale than 1/10 so the engine is a lot bigger and was easier to print. Here's a comparison of a Sand Scorcher to the Carisma Bug that I based mine on and a couple of shots of the engine for my big Bug. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/attac...-04-56-1-1.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4417-65407.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4417-65974.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug I've been as busy as at work so haven't had much time to play with the 3D printer. Did get a few more parts printed. Got lots of sanding ahead and a few more parts to print, some glueing and boom! A new engine. The bolt here is 1mm in diameter. This is the generator clamp. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66777.jpg A few more odds and sods. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66776.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug looks so good, whats the wheelbase? |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Thanks! Wheelbase is 245mm. Pretty short to fit the Sand Scorcher body. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug So cool! I love your printed engines! Hey.... Can you print me a 22r? |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Thanks. At the speed I take to print one of these it'd be years to print a 22r never mind design it. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Theres a working model of the 22RE on thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2661832 Not ideal for us as it must be heavier than it needs to be for our purposes. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug So, how good is this. I'm thinking to myself that maybe it would be nice to put dual carburetors on this engine so last night I go looking on the internet for some pictures to try to model and then 3D print. I stumbled across this. A guy by the name of maiersbus posted printable 3D carbs on February 2 on Thingiverse. He even showed pictures of the carbs mounted on the same stl of the engine that I printed. They were posted full scale but printing them at 1/10 scale seems to work. Serendipity at its best. A bit of cleanup is needed and some glueing. I have some new 0.2mm nozzles coming so I may reprint when they get here. This was printed with a 0.4mm nozzle. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66789.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66790.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Don't you just love IDA's...Pure carb porn!! |

Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Either way, atleast you wont have to sync the carbs every fill up practically. Lol Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug That’s true, these dual Weber’s are all for show. They called them IDFs on Thingiverse. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Oops, sorry. So it must be true...it does make you go blind! |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Oh man, that engine looks so detailed! You've got me looking at 3D printers now... |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Still slowly plugging away at that engine but also started messing around with a chassis. A local guy makes this chassis so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Here I'm trying to get the links sorted out. Using all thread at the moment. This is turning into a slowwww build. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66801.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Wow that chassis looks like it has a ton of drop to it, thats pretty cool. I feel like the skid on my on going build is a fair bit higher. Originally I wanted something like that but I imagined less of a drop. Keep up the good work "thumbsup" |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Thanks man. Yeah it's a big drop all right. They basically follow the inner fender shape of the body. Very little height on the shock supports and lots of room for a steering servo on the axle. We'll see how it works with those narrow axles and tiny tires. |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug And here it is again with everything (ie the skid, transmission, battery plate and ESC mount) all the right way around. I think I was half asleep when I put it all together the first time. Playing around with an idea for hub caps after seeing this 2011 thread that someone dredged up earlier this morning. Still need to figure out how to attach them firmly. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66808.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4547-66807.jpg |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Looking good! I was wondering where those hub caps came from, 3D printed I assume? Is there any thread left on the axle to use for mounting? EDIT: it looks like there is some thread still exposed |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Nope not 3D printed, they’re aluminum. Craft cover buttons from Michaels craft store. Here a pic. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...547-66809.jpeg These wheels come with a screw in hub cover that I’m hoping to use. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...547-66810.jpeg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...547-66811.jpeg Cheers eh, Todd |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Looking so good!! I used those cover buttons on my 34 ford, tho' I couldn't get them to fit G-made wheels, using the backing piece that comes with them and a second locking nut on the drive shaft end. I was lucky with the depth of thread left showing when the wheel nut was on. https://i.imgur.com/aVZCYlQ.jpg?2 https://i.imgur.com/aLwWyW2.jpg?1 I tend to spend a fair amount of time in haberdasheries (sp?), having a full set of females in my life to date! Mother, 4 sisters, wife, two daughters..one sister even having a fabric shop in Virginia when she left Wales. Upside is you find loads of useful stuff..downside is I think I've suffered from the effects of PMT more than most females!! |
Re: Sand Scorcher Crawler - Another Bug Thanks Mike, good idea on the backing plate. I’ll give that a whirl. And yeah, you can find some useful stuff in those shops. A fella here made some great seatbelts from ribbon. Had me looking at that as well. Cheers eh, Todd |
