Default Etrc ttc tj

This is my first scaler. I really just wanted to get it done and mount up a lexan body with some scale looking tires and call it a day. But then i started looking at some builds with tubework. ETRC is getting a scale thing going this season, and we will hopefully pull off a TTC event this year. I want a truck that looks cool, runs 2.2 wheels, and has tubework. Lexan just wouldn't do :?.

So I had a TJ hardbody from a couple of Christmas' ago, and I picked up an X-trail chassis from a friend for $15. My Axial comp rig was collecting dust, and I have plenty of spare parts laying around, so this build is on the cheap .

I have never brazed before so this cage is my first ever attempt at something like this. I don't have any magnetic holders, 3rd hands, or clamps small enough to hold my work, so this was all done on my vise... by eye.

It's a really simple cage. The angles came out just how I wanted them and everything fits great. I copied Joes idea for rear cage mounting, and in the front I'll be tying it in with some tubework. The rear of the cage will get some triangulated spreaders bewteen the two hoops (when I get some more rod), and it will get sliders of some type.

My plans are to keep it simple, but now that I have learned to braze... I'm thinking bumpers

looks good. Keep us posted on the TTC if one develops in TN. I'd be up for a road trip.

I only had about 30 minutes tonight to work on the TJ, so I figured out the body mounts. That way, when I get time it will be ready to measure for sliders and bumpers.

Big tires on for mock up...

The rear will definitely need to be comp cut but I see now that I need to shorten the WB most of an inch in the back.

My rods look a little thin in the pics, but in the flesh it actually looks pretty good. It will bulk up as I add more inches for bracing and triangulation.

I have some square rod I'll use for the bumper base, but it looks like I'll have to braze it straight to the frame. Then it will get a Currie style hood hoop.

Thanks. It's a lot of fun, but frustrating as heck. A comp truck is much easier to build

You have that correct
I would much rather build comp trucks.

Update:

Sliders... Done. They came out allright for a first timer I guess.

Cage... Done for now.

Bumper... I'm having a hard time with this one. I have the start of one on there but I'm not sure I'm crazy about it.

These pics really stink. I'll replace them all if I can get some made in the daytime in good light.

I comp cut the fenders so now the tires fit. I threw in a bad motor and some electronics to see if it actually ran (it is a scrap build afterall).

Even with a bad motor and a tiny 2S lipo, I couldn't stop driving the thing long enough to get any work done on it.

Now I have to put in a good motor, clean up the electronics aand try to make them waterproof. Mount the bumper, cut some of the frame rails off, get the interior back in

I've never run droop, and it's OK... but I'm going to put some small springs in there and go 50/50 maybe.

I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Some things I did this weekend...

First I ditched the droop. I didn't like the way it brought the axle in so far at full droop. Not very scale. :? I put on some short springs on shorter shocks and managed better handling with a lower stance. I have less flex, but to scale it's really good.

Next, I shored up the front hood hoop with some bars going back to the sliders. They follow the fender line. I did these by eye, and used the vise to bend the rod and they came out straight and correct.

I had berg offset wheels on there which looked pretty good (width wise) and tallish tires. I figured 2.2 rok-lox (sp) would be a little bigger, so I wanted to see what 1.9 would look like on there with the Rok Lox. I don't have any 1.9 wheels, but I do have some Claws that are short and some Axial wheels so I mounted them up for a small tire look. I think I like the shorter tires better. What do you guys think?

This

or This

Also... one of my first braze joints broke loose. I'll be fixing that and doing the interior next. While I have it apart, all the underside parts will get treated to blackness. Then that leaves the motor. I should be getting a 30turn HH this week for it. I think for a while I'm going to leave it shiney black. It resembles my first Jeep after I scretched it up pretty good.

Lookin' good, Harvo!

I think I like the 2.2's better, but I'd just have to see it in person. The Rox-Lox would look awesome on that thing!

Claws look pretty good, I think a shorter tire is definitely the way to go.

I picked up a 30turn HH handwound from a buddy last night to go in the Jeep. Now I'm on the search for some scale tires...
