holycaveman's scale 2.2 The Montana Outlaw 8) Havn't posted a build in a while and since this one is alittle unique, I thought I may as well start one. I have done ttc and 1.9rs before, so this time I went with a 2.2 scale build. Tough part was being origional an still scale. I was going to do a bronco, but even though i love them, there are some awesome bronco builds that would be tough to compete with! So i found this body in the forsale section. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...39420476_b.jpg And while i have never been a land rover fan, the size appeared perfect for a 2.2 scale build. Once I recieved the body and mocked it up, it confirmed my estimation, it was the perfect size for this build. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6674175776.png THANKS shambrick! After I saw the shipping costs he practally gave it to me! So first thing i did is strip the body and sanded it down. Now this body is a 1/7 scale. So 5 in tires would scale out to be 35's on a landy, but i alwaus liked alittle larger tires than stock anyways. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6704655745.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6704770890.jpg Next I started on the frame. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6803752122.png I used 3/4 in square tubing instead of 1/2 in. Harder to bend but looks wise i think its better. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6803731176.png http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6800769086.jpg So since the type of motor I have spins very fast I descided to go with losi axles flipped upside down for now. You will under stand why they have to be upside down later;-) I went with a sort of z link rear, and a two link/panhard set up in the front. I wanted to stay away from the common crawler link for this build so i went with a boxed and pinned with bushings in the rear, and a torsion bar set up in the front. Its pretty dag gone strong. But took me quite a while. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6876342941.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7035260031.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7064208037.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7306739019.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7306475181.jpg Got my super swampers in! THANKS edge087! Little agressive for this build... But i like the mud! Also started a ladder for the back. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7229464115.jpg I descided to put the motor up front. Alot more difficult but in the future this will allow under the hood access and a full interior. The wb is 16.5 and with the motor up front i had to come up with a carrior bearing. I used max shafts drilled and pinned tight on all the outputs. |
Carrier bearing. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7558003821.jpg Used three six mm bearings for the carrier. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7558051616.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7559048199.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...7558742045.jpg And also today I got my tranny mounts done. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...43895227-1.jpg And the drive shafts hooked up. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...44004668-1.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...47140610-1.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...47163140-1.jpg I am pretty happy so far except for the shock mounts. I think i will change the upper mounts and lower the chassis about a 1/2 in. Couple of poser shots. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...47100549-1.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...47289025-1.jpg Thanks for checking this out! I will try and keep it updated regulary. |
Updates? I like the build. "thumbsup" |
awesome love the carrier bearing set up, and the indoor park in the garage... Mint! |

So far he hasn't explained.:ror: But that axle looks flipped to me too. |
I read that after posting... but why? |
Whats that I smell.......could it be methane ? Guessing it has somthing to do with the power plant and the driveline conections as far as the axle posistion Cant wait to see were you go with this"thumbsup" |
Cant wait to see what you come up with. |
Looks good so far Tom, but don't lower it. Your going to need ground clearance with that long wheel base. Also, I think it's pretty cool how you have a misterious twist to your build thread. "thumbsup" |
Love the links! Is that a 1/6 scale body? |

That does resemble a 2-speed tranny out of a T-Maxx... |
Rig is looking great. 1/7 scale . That is one big scaler. |
Lets see those swampers on there "thumbsup" |
Been busy at work. So no updates. Hopfully tonight i will get some more finished on the truck. Really undescided if i want silver or black rims? Maybe you guys could shoot me your op's here before i place an order? Stock rims.... http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6715662647.png Black rims... http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6056682645.png Since i will be running swampers or locks, i was thinking these? ]http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...6056278346.png |
I think the black looks better, but the silver does looks more stock. |
I'd go black, those wheels are sweet. I too am curious about the axles being upside down? |
Black! "thumbsup" |
heck with the wheels... want to see the power plant"thumbsup" |
Quote:
Or not, I don't know which way those things (motor) turn. |
Thanks fellows for the comments. I think black is the way i will go for the rims"thumbsup" The poweplant? Ha, ha....... I am not letting the cat out of the yet! But i will tell you it puts out some major watts! Like around 700 watts. Keep in mind that its not about speed or power with this rig. Maxfactor! Long time no see buddy! |
its going to need to generate at least 1.21 gigawatts of electricity...or i wont be happy. looking good caveman!!! working on a few new trucks myself. |
I shouldn't miss this crazy powered Landy.. SUBSCRIBED.. keep us updated..soon  "thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup" |
700 watts? it's got to be a pocket bike motor. http://www.nationalonlinescooters.co...ROD&ProdID=259 |

Sorry for the delay, been working on it quite a bit. But you would not notice alot from pix. Started on the paint process today. Got all my parts ordered a few days ago, rims and all!8) SO I went to autozone today to see if they had a radiator and waterpump for the Land Rover. No go. SO i ordered one from frozen cpu and it came in. Also picked up a couple of electric fans. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...8781740118.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...8753969825.jpg Water pump is brushless along with the fans. Together they draw only .6 amps peak. So a smallish 3s should power them for at least a couple of hours. Now i cant wait to get my other parts and get this finished. |

radiator, is it for something like a water cooled boat esc? looks sweet, always liked the big scale builds8) |
Quote:
No its not a watercooled esc. Great idea though. I have never been a fan of large scale builds. However when i actually sat down and figured out what a real scale 2.2 would be, it turns out to be large! LOL Got the tranny skid plate mostly done, radiator and waterpump mounted. Steering servo and links, tranny and motor servos mounted. Soon as i finish mounting the exhaust, pto winch and the body, i will strip it down and clean up the chassis then rhino line it. And put it all back together. Ended up going with a cs80 servo wired directly to a 2s lipo. Can you say power! It has so much steering torque that i panicked and ordered aluminum knuckles for the losi axles. It looked like the servo was going to snap the stock plastic knuckles right off. All trucks need dual exhaust, so while i am waiting on the rest of my parts i started working on the exhaust. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9043180792.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9043935148.jpg |
Subscribed......I spy a fuel tank |
Quote:
Thats right! Building it as scale as i can. Could have made one but this tank fits realky well. Got my first of three orders in today! RC4WD had really quick shippinh! Thanks! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9085508045.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9086108057.jpg These rims look awesome! Nicest scale rims i have ever owned. Lighting system and no yuppy land rover would be complete with out a remote starting system:twisted: |
I think you let the cat out of the bag. |
Yea i guess it doesnt take a rocket scientist to add it up. But things are going to start moving quick now;-) |
Still messing with the exhaust. First time really working with brass. Pretty good stuff! Solders easy, sands easy.......i think i will use it more often. One into two muffler. Complete with mufler packing! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9127542260.jpg Came up short on one of the rear pipes. So will have to get more tubing. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9127440614.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9127354449.jpg |
Not much time today. But i did get to finish the exhaust. Except for painting of course. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9212697011.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9217551740.jpg Roughed in a small exhaust strap. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9217898714.jpg If the rest of my parts come in tomorrow, the fun will begin! |
Got the water head in today! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9302191189.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...9302304289.jpg Now the cat is officially out of the bag. Alot of little things to do yet. And no zipties on the shocks...lol. I tested the exhaust. Amaisingly quiet and NO burning eyes! Just alittle blue smoke out the two pipes in the rear8) i would drive this in a public park! LOL The mufler packing is working. It idles and revs great! Made certain the exhaust was not restrictive. Soon as i mount the body and run the cooling lines, it will be stripped, aligned, sanded and painted. So now most all nitros have a rear engine. since i opted for the more scale approach the axles had to be flipped in order for the truck to be running in the right direction. The reverse works good. Have to adjust the two speed yet. Why nitro? Thats the awesome thing about scale building. It has nothing to do with your powerplant,or what style of truck you want. It has nothing to do with lexan or hard body, styrene, where the servos at, etc.... its up to the builder to create his or her idea of scale"thumbsup" And after owning my first nitro this year, a scale truck with a real scale motor was the spark that it took to get me back into building. So i sold all my battery powered vehicals and started this project. Anyways, this is the reason behind the madness:twisted: |
Wow  Now this is what i call "Outlaw" ... i know the feeling about nitro... been racing nitro onroad / offroad seriously for the past 8 years until i was hit by the rock crawler craze - :lmao: Awesome... "thumbsup""thumbsup" This i have to see... keep us updated.. |

Thanks. I was the opposite, started out crawling years ago, always was anti nitro. Until i traded for an old rc10gt this year. After driving it i knew that a nitro scaler was the next step in scale building for me. Anyways i spent an hour last night running coolant lines, then two more hours fixing leaks and purging the system of any air. Using a large 1/2 in clear line about 10 in long as a coolant tank that goes to the inlet of the pump. Then a small line running from the pump to the head. Head to radiator, and back. So i finally get it leak free, no air, just pretty blue coolant. And no i dont like the looks of two of the lines. So i will re do it today. My 1000mah 2s lipo is not going to be up to the task i dont believe. It runs the pump and fans for an hour, but if i add the high power front servo i think it will fade quick. And with no waterpump, just like a 1:1. I will overheat. So i have to either get another small lipo, or just one large lipo. The goal is one solid hour of run time. It is not using much nitro at all. So i have plenty of fuel. Will post pictures later. Body is almost finished. Should be done monday. May start on the pto winch? |
Alright, does anyone know the safe mimimum temperature the engine can run? Running about 128 with th fans, and 160 with out fans. I may have to run the cooling system off the throttle to keep the temps up. |
