Default Moorin's hilux truggy UK build

Well been around rc's for quite sometime now but mostly nitro offroad stuff. Been looking at getting into the crawler side of things for a while so after many late nights trawling the net and various forums plus a wanted ad on here I have conjured up a plan that looks something like this:

Scratchbuilt scx10 ladder chassis and custom tranny alloy tranny mount

Gmade piggyback shocks

Ax10 axles

Custom links

Rc4wd r2 tranny with disconnect

3racing centre shafts

2.2 hotbodies rover whites

Proline titus wheels

DIY star foams and weighted wheels

Hilux shell with caged bed.

Still getting my head round what motor/esc to use but liking the looks of the rc4wd outcry esc so any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

Been collecting over the last month as many tools as possible so pictures will follow sooner or later. I have the basic analogy of if it doesn't fit I'll make it fit as I'm a mechanical engineer by trade so can get access to lathes, milling machines etc.

Thanks

Anyways everyone likes pictures so here is where I am so far:

Frame rails are made out of 14x5mm steel bar

Custom steering link

Parts day:

building the gmade piggybacks

In the "workshop"

Skidplate mounted

Tyres mounted with lead wire weighted to 6 ounce up front and 2 out back.

Decided to mig the cage and suspension towers onto the frame rails.

Started to file them up

Tranny mock up

Latest chassis picture

Will keep the pictures coming as soon as I make more progress, thanks for looking

Looks like you've made a good start! I've just picked up a length of 1/2" box section I'm planning on turning into a chassis some how got to set up a jig so I can cut it straight down the middle.

Where abouts in the UK you based? I'm down in "sunny" Sussex.

I'm from north Lincolnshire, from
Research I figured how long scx10 rails were and then looking at pictures etc started drawing the chassis up on graph paper and then bending it in the vice I used that as a template. Thanks for compliments

I think with it been on the heavier side it should look and act more scale on the trails but can always loose some weight if necessary.

I like em heavy, just for that reason Sure, you gotta beef up the drive-train, but the performance as a scale crawler is awesome!

After what I saw at NWSC weight seems to go both ways. I think extra weight in the right places seem to help force the sespention to work. My ratrod his way heavy and it seems to crawl like a champ but is top heavy compaired to most.
Just one of those things you have to play with and see what you like. Either way - build on mate, looks like a great custom start!

Little more progress. When happy with the fabrication I'll dismantle and clean up/spray the chassis etc.

Custom made 4 link mount with central servo

mock up With tranny and driveshaft along with wheels

And with body (using the other driveshaft as a prop)

Hopefully the weight is going to be low down as it doesn't seem to be a tall truck. Can adjust the shocks to suit with damping and spring rate.

Thanks for comments will have to get it on the scales when fully mocked up.

35t would be my choice.
I was stationed in England for 8 years and loved it. Had to leave alot of good friends that I still talk to. KORC is about an hour north of Lincs Uni in Kirton in Linsey. I marshaled there for a while - use to co-drive Howling Wolf winch events with some of the other guys that worked and wheeled there.

Man I mis that island!

Alright yeh I know where it is now i live near S c u n t horpe (it stars out the word if i dont space it ;)) so not a million miles away. They use to allow trials bikes there aswell if I'm not mistaken. And cool so I'm guessing the 35t will give me the torque and the wheel speed I need?

Body is going to need a lot of chopping to work with the wheels and might even acquire some axle wideners. As it looks a bit close.

I like playing with gadgets so Would people recommend 4ws aswell as dig or just one or the other?

Well you have to love parts day:

And finally have the chassis mocked up just got to start with body and cage, thinking about doving the hood but unsure yet.

The body makes it look very "nose down" but i was using a driveshaft to prop the body up just as a mock up

Made some major process last night and bedded in the motor ready for fitting and had a quick play with it. Can anyone recommend a lower offset wheel (as in one that protrudes further out) as ive got rubbing on full lock?

Fitted the transmission but removed the dig unit till I can get on a lathe and cut down a driveshaft.

So far so good I haven't found anything it won't crawl up including the stairs haha

Thanks

How thick did you end up making those frame rails?

Oh yeh that's what I was planning the frame rails are 5mm thick. Going to purchase some 2.2 rok lox's as I'm having clearance issues with the rovers on full lock, anyone used axle wideners?
