I see quite a few trophy trucks on here so here's mine. It's getting closer to done so I'll try and catch you guys up real quick. For more details here's the build thread from the beginning 2015 desert build off.. '79 f-250 - RCShortCourse

It's tig welded 3/16 solid rod for the most part. I built the twin I beam front suspension and I am using wraith knuckles that pivot off of tapped king pins made of 1/4 rod

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

The chassis/ truck cab is more prerunner or weekend toy styled rather than trophy truck. It'll have a full interior. The center consul/ tunnel houses the motor and trans.

The rear axle is a wraith axle. Mocked up with wraith trailing arms but I'll be building my own trailing arms and upper links. The and is flipped to achieve a better drive line angle. I'm using a exo trans because I'd it's size and simplicity

And Most recently I've mocked up the swing steering. I'll be making more permanent links and a servo mount very soon.

I almost think that front end should be in the "Pics that make you go WTF" thread. I can't even...

does it get the full range of steering with that setup?

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

Thanks everyone! Yes it does get full range of steering. I'll post a video of the steering once the servo is installed

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

I like that steering setup, and the truck's looking great!

With the way the upper links are angled, I'm assuming it'll act as an ackerman steering setup? (Meaning the when turning the inner wheel turns sharper?) Or is it an equal throw setup?

Love the build this thing is bad a$$. just one question do you think the radius arms will need some kind of pivot points where they meet the control arm?
and im subscribed

The tie rods both throw equally. Ackerman is related to the tie rod attachment points on the knuckles in relation to the width and wheelbase of the truck. This set up has a little Ackerman I believe. I'll double check when I get home. The best part of this steering tho is I have no bump steer through out the travel.

No pivots are needed here. With out shocks the front drops almost to the point that the front tires touch. The only limiting factor is the pivot balls in the rod ends. It is much stronger welded solid and I'm planning on gusseting that attachment point also for strength. This heavy old truck should be able to take some abuse when it's finished lol!

Thanks again for your compliments guys. This front suspension and steering set up is the reason I'm building this. I wanted to see if I could replicate the 1:1 setup and have it function as well. But mostly because it looks sick as f**k!!

absolutely epic, did you have a particular inspiration or is this a homebrew design?

Thanks guys. I built this piece by piece from a design I had in my head. It's my first custom build and I'll tell you next time I will plan it out better! At least some detailed drawings. I'm happy with the out come so far but I see where the wood dowel mock up and stuff would help out greatly.

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

Here's a video. It's a little sloppy. The plastic knuckles I'm using for mock up are worn and there's no bushings in one. The screw's are poked thru but no bolts on the back but it shows how it works.

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

I only have 1 complaint/critisism so far with your build :) If you're going for authenticity, raise the seats up a bit, otherwise if you're putting a driver fig in, he's gonna be looking like a little old lady trying to see over the wheel :P

DarkTalon 04-24-2015 11:04 AM

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

If this works... this is about where the top of the bolsters should be at least, maybe even just a little higher.. https://scontent-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...29512395_o.jpg

WCCrawler 04-24-2015 11:51 AM

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

Of that's your only compliant I can live with that lol. I've been thinking about putting figures in there but I don't have any to build off of. It would be really simple to put a couple spacers under the seat to raise it. It'd be much more of a pain to cut the mounts out and lower them. So I kept them a little lower. Right now the seat backs come about half way up the window of the body. A little higher would be ideal for empty seats.

What height of figures do you guys use? And where do you get them? I was going to go to Walmart and see if I could find something I like. The only real requirement right now is I need a hot chick in the passenger seat"thumbsup"

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

very nice build.
but what happens if you take an impact to one front wheel. won't it bend the suspension arm(cant think of the name curently)

DarkTalon 04-24-2015 10:38 PM

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

Most guys around here use WWE figs. Any figure that's about 6-7" in height(haven't actually measured one yet) should work, since that should roughly work out to a 6ft dude at 1:10. I was basing my observation on the seat itself, since the top bolsters on the sides are pretty much shoulder level on a real race bucket. You could probably just google images of race cars and get an idea of where the seat is in orientation of the wheel, if you wanted to adjust it. :) I also can't really give TOO many complaints since I'm unable to build one of these myself currently due to lack of space.

MAC FAB 04-25-2015 08:23 AM

Re: twin I beam prerunner 79 f250

Those seats are waaaay high back. But what are you going to do unless you make your own? A lot of stuff used to detail your build doesn't scale out right to those in the know, just like the seats. First thing I noticed was the hole for the harnesses is too high for a proper and safe installation in the real world. Doubt it would pass tech on that point. He can always set them in booster seats and the problem is solved. Whats the law anyhow, 5 feet tall and 60 lbs? Action figs are embryos! :^)) Speaking of tech WC, I didn't notice the little tag on the chassis making you SCORE legal. Pre runner only then, right?

TTB is money! Always wanted to build a setup like this. You got a good thing going here.

I may have missed it, but where did you get the body from? I am building a prerunner as well and in the market for an old Ford truck body.
