Default "Best" Traxxas Big Bore set-up?

Hi guys!

I just bought a set o Traxxas 2662 big bore shocks, for my Wraith. The rig is being built for pure crawling, and it will eventually turn into a C3 rig.

The problem is that I know next to nothing about shock tuning. So I would like to get some pointers on what oil and what pistons to use.

Also, should I do a droop set up (internal springs)?

I know I'm forgetting something, that I will eventually remember

Thanks,
NunoTT

My personal favorite;

30wt oil front and rear with whatever pistons come in it, 3 hole?
Dlux zero preload cups front and rear
Losi pink springs front with internal McMaster Carr P/N 9657K66
Losi brown? springs rear with internal McMaster Carr P/N 9657K43

Just barely goes to full extension under the weight of the axles/wheels/tires and reacts with the correct travel speed to keep everything well controlled and can carry a tire over a "gap" if needed.

The internal spring does what for you other than being a bump stop and reduce stroke? The pistons survive the abuse? I wouldn't have thought of that in a million years. Explanation please.....

It's a 3/4 droop setup that's fully sprung. Keeps the rig low while controlling the weight well enough that it doesn't unload on side hills and cause the body to flop around. As an example, my C2 rig running big bores will stand on the sidewalls of the tires without anything else touching.

The pistons hold up just fine. It's less force than a heavy oil in them. The K66 IIRC is only 1.4 lbs/in and the K43 is about 1.0 lbs/in.

Please define 3/4 droop, as in you have 1/4 of total compression left at ride height? This has me thinking, I may make aluminum pistona and try this in a go fast car. Compressed, how long are the inner springs?

Correct. At ride height I only have 1/4 travel before fully compressed. This does make an exponential spring rate since as the shock is extending the internal spring is compressing and increasing in rate. In my specific setup I'm using the 4.0" length shocks (I think they're the 2662) with 1" springs. They're a little short but that's fine for what I'm doing. I will say it makes it a total PITA to get the rod ends on with setups that require removing them to change springs.

If you do decide to do it in a go fast car understand that it'll be prone to bottoming out. In one of my rigs with way too much power for it's own good it gets a little bumpy towards the top speed.

For the go fast its only a bump stop. Still needs all the travel I can get!
