| SARCCA camp and crawl 08/06-08/07
Who wants to get out of the heat for some crawling/camping??? We are going to head up to Mt. Lemmon, most likely camping on Begelow the morning of the 6th. The plan is for a scale run Saturday afternoon/evening then Sunday morning we will head over to Sykes Knob for some crawling. Everyone is welcome, if you think you might attend please post up so I know how big of a campsite to look for. It is monsoon season and very likely to rain on the mountain so come prepared. If enough people attend we can maybe do some sort of potluck. As of right now there are Stage II fire restrictions in effect so no campfires and only small propane stoves/grills. That may change by then but who knows. Get your crawlers and scalers put back together and pack up the truck!!!! |

Ok, I have a few coordinates for those that can use them. These can be looked up on Google Earth. Turnoff out of Oracle to take the Control Rd. up the backside of the mountain: 32°36'35.57"N 110°45'54.94"W Bigelow Rd...this is where you will turnoff the main highway up the mountain to get to where we will be camped: 32°24'46.66"N 110°43'52.52"W Sykes Knob, the crawl spot: 32°25'57.61"N 110°45'07.95"W I am not sure of our exact campsite yet, as it will depend on availablitly when I get up there the morning of. I am going to go up before then and pin down a couple of sites that will work and at least give everyone a better idea of where to go. I think we already have enough poeple, how does everyone feel about doing a potluck? Last edited by timh; 07-21-2011 at 12:30 PM. |

I went up the mountain yesterday to figure out where would be the best place to get a campsite. I narrowed it down to a few spots but I won't know which one for sure until that Saturday morning when I can get up there and find out which ones are open. Once I am up there Saturday morning I will post up exact directions to the spot we are in, so depending on when you leave, make sure you check this thread 1st. When you go up Catalina Highway, you will go pretty much to the top of the mountain. You will be looking for Mt. Bigelow Rd. on your right. Turn on Bigelow and go .2 miles. At this point you can turn right or left, I will put up a sign saying SARCCA directing you which way to go. From there you will follow the signs to where we will be camped. Not to worry though, if you go right and dont find us the road dead ends at the very top of the mountain, if you go left you will snake through the wood a little ways until you came back to the main highway. If you haven't found us by then you can simply turn around and go through the area again. I will be watching out for everyone as well. If possible I am going to find the easiest campsite to spot from the road also. Mt. Bigelow is all dirt roads but accessible by car. We drove my wifes Corolla up there yesterday just to make sure. Also, just to make sure everyone is aware, there are no facilties on Mt. Bigelow. It is not one of the developed campgrounds therefore it does not cost $18/night to camp. There is however a $5/day fee to be on the mountain, there is a fee station on the way up to obtain those passes. There is a healthy bear population on the mountain also so make sure you are prepared for that, though they don't really ever bother anybody. If anyone wants to come down Friday night for camping also I will join you, just let me know. Going up Friday night will ensure a good spot also. And finally, I just checked the Coronado Nat'l Forest website and all fire restrictions have been lifted so we can have a campfire. |
