Axial / Wheelyking "Mixed Emotions" Crawler build

Started life as a rtr wheely king. Quikly saw the dremel and converted it to the calikingcrawler. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0693.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0691.jpg
The hacked up king chassis and old parts
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0529.jpg

Now I have decided to go another route and build a chassis based on the ax-10.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0547.jpg

Also ordered the proline M3 hammers with memory foam and flat black axial rockster beadlock wheels.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0537.jpg

Now this is what I have come up with. only have the front links done. Working 7 days a week will slow build.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0550.jpg
The wheel base is just under 12 1/2 inches, should be exact with all the electrical and tranny in it. Links are made with revo ends and 8-32 allthread and steel tube.

This is the body i want to run for now, I am going to dove tail it front and rear.

I'll keep posting as i progress, and tips are welcome"thumbsup"

It is my first attemt, not sure how well it will work out. I did it with my 1/1 scout, but the one peice plastic body may pose a problem.

Stay tuned for the results, i'm gunna work on it tonight. I'm waiting on my motor clock plate from clodmodracing.com. so i cant do much with the chassis. The upper links should be done tonight too!!!!"thumbsup"

calikingcrawler 01-24-2009 11:55 PM

Hey everyone. Had a busy night so I didn't get much done, The front suspension is pretty much done, just have to adjust it a little. I made the upper link mount from 3/8 alum c-channel.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...l/IMG_0557.jpg

At full flex the shock rubs the upper link a little. Here are some pics so you get and idea:....

And here with the trans mocked up:

this looks cool. what are the chassis plates made from?

rottenbelly 01-25-2009 06:59 AM

Looks good. I fought torque twist for days with mine. Ended up making a new skid so i could triangulate links. What size spur are you gonna run? I had clearance issues with a 96, but made it work.

Clod mod suggested a 96T HPI spur gear. I was planning on going with that. I am going to have to notch the drivers side chassis plate. if it looses to much strength Ill plate it with alum or some thin sheet metal. Are your shocks wheelyking or axial? What kinda spring are you running? Also did you find much play in the mounting of the trans? I was worried about it flexing back and forth.

I am running the 96. It just did fit. My skid with is 3.5 compared to the stock axials 3.25. The tranny is rock steady mounted to the cutting board. It flexs less than the stock axial skid!! Those are the WK shocks. I am running 50 wt all the way around with the axial blue extra firm rear springs and red soft fronts. With the rovers on this thing is very close to keeping up with my Axial. It is only 3 degrees off on my test board. My axial crawls 64 degrees and the Wk is crawling 59. Im getting there. Let us know how it turns out.

calikingcrawler 01-25-2009 09:41 AM

Will do. I'm hoping to have all the suspension done tonight, so i can flex it and work out any kinks. My chassis is narrower than yours it looks like, so my spur is going to come out the side a little. Hope it all works out, its more work than i exspected. I love doing this stuff, working out all the problems is the fun part.

rottenbelly 01-25-2009 11:08 AM

You bet, I tinker more than i drive!

To an extent. I have a axial/wk truck also and sometimes more problems arise after the sob gets tossed across the shop lol

calikingcrawler 01-25-2009 09:55 PM

SORRY DOG MAN!!!!! The body was a complete failure. So plan b is the scale ambush body!

As for my progress. Got the steering setup complete. Took some fab work but seems to work well. Also took some flex pics! Enjoy!!!! Give me your input everyone."thumbsup"
