Sourdough GC-3A

Here the crazy abortion of a truck I started with. Work has been slow this week. So I decided to do a much needed re-build.

Fully Loaded AX-10 Axles, custom chassis and WK transmission.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-04-01_897.jpg

Here's the new sweetness . . .

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-09-04_115.jpg

I didn't like the stock motor plate with my little puller motor, so I started cutting up the stock one.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-09-47_514.jpg

Then cut out a template of a new one

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-26-34_639.jpg

Then did some cutting and filing while I was waiting for some more work to come in.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...0810172417.jpg

Here it is mounted in the chassis, still need to cut off some excess material. But it's a good start!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-54-11_593.jpg

The motor only hangs out the chassis like 3/8"

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-54-21_210.jpg

SSZ wheels mounted up (Thanks to Falloout "thumbsup") And steering roughly mocked up.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-55-51_886.jpg

With 725 hubs im right at 10.5" at the widest part of the tire.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...0-56-00_93.jpg

600's in the rear for just over 10" width.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-56-42_101.jpg

Turnin' right

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-54-58_436.jpg

Turnin' left

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-54-50_765.jpg

Electronics and Battery plate for the front links

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-03-46_860.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-04-00_589.jpg

It looks like everything will fit just perfectly! Thanks again Chris for the Batteries!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-05-01_128.jpg

Mocked up in the chassis and at full compression

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...1-08-00_49.jpg

That's all for now! More updates to come this week!

Got some more work done late last night on the shocks

These are the rod ends I used. They are for a Revo/Jato.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-30-09_948.jpg

Threaded in a long 3mm set screw

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-32-45_498.jpg

Then chucked it up in a drill

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-33-36_999.jpg

Then took a hack saw blade to make a groove in it

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-37-50_817.jpg

Now its ready for the e-clip!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-38-26_696.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-40-55_255.jpg

Associated Gold springs

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-54-09_502.jpg

Epoxy lined Shrink Tube is my friend!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-56-27_269.jpg

Almost finished

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-58-55_696.jpg

And done!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...0-00-41_86.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-15-37_588.jpg

At full steering

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...0-15-51_64.jpg

sourdojack 12-09-2010 11:42 AM

Here is the electronics I was able to finish up!

Clear shrink tube over the BEC and 18 gauge wire. Don't mind the dent in the Capacitor "thumbsup"

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-25-28_993.jpg

It's hard to see the details, but I used a micro deans for the power and ground to the servo, then used the regular end to go into the reciever with just the yellow wire intact.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-10-46_666.jpg

Nice and clean with just the motor wires running to the back of the chassis!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-11-01_638.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-10-30_197.jpg

All ready to run, minus body mounts

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-59-25_893.jpg

And the final weight!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-59-46_849.jpg

It's going to gain some weight once I install the Robinson transmission gears and spool. So it will probably end up being right at 5lbs.

Now I just need to figure out how the girlfriend wants to paint the body, this is her sportsman truck afterall...

TOM

Stormin2u 12-09-2010 11:49 AM

Great upgrade best shaft chassis imo.

JeremyH 12-09-2010 11:53 AM

Nice work on those spring "cups"! BTW, that is a nice cover on that lipo!

Don't lie. Thats just what you tell yourself, to justify spending $$ on it :lmao:

You will like the way I am going to paint mine for this weekend :flipoff:

Looks good man. Super low CG. Nice

Beerman Crawler 12-09-2010 03:51 PM

Nice work Tom, cant wait to drive it. You still need to let me drive the the losi :flipoff:

WOUrugger51 12-11-2010 11:50 PM

this is awesome Tom!! I can't wait to drive it when I come home!

I mean, it's not an XR10, but.... :flipoff:

sourdojack 12-12-2010 11:22 PM

I got the truck just about finished the other night and was able to drive it today at the ORCRC comp. It drove amazing to say the least! I have an Eritex dig I can mount up to it... Might just have to drive this instead of my LCC!

Here is a shot of the body all trimmed up and mounted

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-23-03_187.jpg

And I took the motor plate back out and trimmed some of the fat off of it. I also geared it down from 16/87 to 12/93, much better low end now "thumbsup"

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...13-24-14_7.jpg

UPSKIRT!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-24-36_991.jpg

Castor angle with my Gunnar Beef "Toobs". It was even higher before I spaced out the upper links 7mm.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-16-04_388.jpg

Put some Ti Lundsford links on the steering

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-16-22_333.jpg

Next project is so bore some holes through this darn spool and get it on a diet! Hopefully the trans holds up in the meantime

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-26-18_162.jpg

Did I mention that the truck drove freakin' sweet today?!?

Jaybe, maybe if you would have came to the comp today you could have driven it :flipoff:

TOM

sourdojack 12-15-2010 10:39 AM

I forgot to take a picture of how I set my gear mesh. Since one of the motor screws is covered by the spur gear, I drilled a 1/8" hole through the spur gear. Now I can fit my allen driver in with no problems!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-26-38_627.jpg

I got some more Sweetness mounted up last night! These Eritex dig units sure are nice!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-25-45_287.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...1-26-06_91.jpg

So with the dig unit installed - minus servo and still no HD trans parts; the truck weighs in just under 5lbs "thumbsup"

I'm missing the shift fork for the dig, so after I get it this weekend I will have more updates!

And I still need to paint the body. Anyone have suggestions?

Got bored at work today and started painting it silver and metallic black (only colors I had behind the seat of my truck). I'll be sure to put in some pink accents though Dave!

Sniper4370 12-15-2010 04:32 PM

Are you running Traxxas drive shafts, or what are they?

Sorry for the newb question! "thumbsup"

The driveshafts are from a Losi Comp Crawler. They have a metal CV joint at each end and are plastic in the center. They are light, slim and seem to take plenty of abuse. Also easy to modify length, unlike an MIP.

I didn't break a thing at SuperDave's house on Sunday, and that place is WELL known for breaking crawlers to pieces. :lmao:

Yeah, I should have tried harder, but somebody kept giving me dead batteries!

You should be happy Dave, last night I finally fixed that broken motor wire :flipoff: No more thinking I got a boat load of dead batteries

And I did a quick easy paint job last night. It was super cold in the garage and I didn't take my time, so there are some flaws in the paint. But it's not a big deal.. I cut the body sides too short anyways

No rainbow colors, but it sure looks ghey! :flipoff:

Are you going to make it to the comp tomorrow? Maaaybe the ORCRC comp next Sunday?

Anyways, I'm getting a lot of odds and ends done tonight on the GC-3A!

Starting with some motivation!

sourdojack 01-01-2011 11:31 PM

Gotta thank Zippy for the Monster stickers "thumbsup" They matched really well. And it's even the girlfriends favorite energy drink!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-25-40_298.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-25-51_719.jpg

I just had to put the "trucker chicks" on it! Since this is a girls truck after all...

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-26-01_382.jpg

sourdojack 01-02-2011 12:09 AM

Here are some pics of the body on the truck. I cut it too short before I mounted it. I originally thought I could slam the body lower, but without doing a "trick" steering set-up, this is as low as I can go.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-43-28_141.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...2-43-47_75.jpg

I don't think I can do the Gatekeeper style steering with the pinion angle/caster angles I run anyways.

The last time I drove the truck the front didn't seem to flex well. So before I soften up the springs, I'm going to raise the shocks on the axle. This in boards them 1/4" and lays the angle down flatter. We'll see how it dirves tomorrow at the comp.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-41-19_364.jpg

sourdojack 01-02-2011 01:07 AM

Here are pics of my little dig. I used some polishing cloth on the case to keep the shifter sliding smoothly. And of course for the bling factor "thumbsup"

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-40-50_153.jpg

Here is the top view of how I routed the wiring.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...2-40-27_59.jpg

I used some 1/4" Delrin rod to hold the servo in place at the chassis. The lower piece has all thread through the center clamping the servo in place. I coated it in CA glue after I got it all installed to keep it from moving at all. It's just a temparary mount out of delrin since I broke my 3mm tap

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...23-36-55_8.jpg

Still has a nice and low COG though "thumbsup"

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-37-40_161.jpg

Here is the final weight with Cheapbatterypacks.com 850mah 3S lipo

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-44-27_716.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-44-48_929.jpg

sourdojack 01-02-2011 01:17 AM

For you guys wondering about my wheel weight. Front wheel/tire combos are 10.0 oz each and rears are 6.5 oz each. So 7 oz of weight added to the front wheels.

Here is the total weight bias!

Front axle is 3 lbs 1.1 oz

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...22-55-02_5.jpg

Rear axle is 2 lbs 0.7 oz

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...-52-15_490.jpg

So right about a 60% front weight bias... Dunno if that's good, but the truck sure drives great so far! :)

Sweet rig, and the motivation is mutual... thanks for the weight specs!

It'll never work...

:flipoff:

sourdojack 01-03-2011 01:38 PM

Here is a quick vid of Josh driving it up a line I have never made with a no-dig shafty before. One of these days maybe Chris the Battery Guy will come make some sweet video's of the new build. I just need to "cup the balls" better i think... lol

Yes, if you run the beef toobs, then do some more modifying to your axle and then drill/tap the toobs. It's not exactly bolt on, and this much caster makes a BTA set-up near impossible. When I have the knuckles flipped around they just miss the link mounts by a millimeter. Right now I'm running just about 20 degrees of castor.

Here are some old pics of rotating my axle C's

I'm not liking how it shifts right now with the crappy servo mount I made. So I'm waiting on the eritex servo mount to show up and I'll update then. But I have never had it disengage out of a position, that's for sure.

sourdojack 01-05-2011 11:58 PM

I made it out to my buddys machine shop tonight to lighten up my Robinson spool. Here are some pics! Disregard the marks on the gear from when I tried to drill it :lmao:

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ket_45087_.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ket_45088_.jpg

We used a 1/4" carbide end mill, only thing I could find that would cut through the surface hardening.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ket_45089_.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ket_45090_.jpg

Now when the girlfriend strips out the stock trans gears she can install the steel gears "thumbsup"
