Hey Chris.
Good looking photos of the rig. Glad to see you finally posted up what you've done so far. It's come a long way from the huge mess it was when you bought it from the guy down the street.

I'm anxious to see pics of the shaved rovers.

I need to see if I can invert my shocks like that. Every little bit helps. There's just no room on that darn mini!

Hopefully I'll have my pile of parts back together soon and we can meet out at Sam Louis.

chris.martell 06-04-2013 06:17 AM

Thanks MrCrackhead. Ill be posting pictures of the shaved rovers after work today and also a little write up on how I plan to repair the one I shaved a little bit to much. I was excited that my 4.5 hours of rubber sculpting was about to be completed I quit being careful and messed the very last one up. I think I can repair it good enough to last until I get another set shipped to me. Oh and that pile of parts is going to be a BA rig when you are finished thumbsup on the work post up a build thread so other can appreciate all the fab thats gone into!

I recently switched from brushless to brushed I have a novak 55t rock star motor my spur gear is 93t and my pinion is 17t. This setup gets me decent wheel speed but when I tested it out on some steep decents I noticed my braking stinks and my rig will slowly roll down hill instead of holding. If I switch to a 15t pinion I have no wheel speed but awesome brakes. I've noticed a lot of people use an 87t spur and 14t pinion. Can someone please give me some insight on this all research I've done just seems to gLk about how fast and how hot the motor and esc get. Any help or point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

I run 14/87 because that's what both of my Scorpions came with stock. Recently I grabbed one of the 20 tooth pinions from the spare parts bags, and tried that out on the CUCV (1.9 t/w). It picked the speed up nicely, which would probably be good for trail running, but I didn't like the feel of how it crawled. Just felt too flat and powerless for me. When I start ordering parts for my next build, I may grab a 16 or 17 tooth pinion and see if I can get more speed than I have now and still have enough torque to feel nice and snappy.

Nice job on snagging that Helios body!

Re: 5.10 The old school shafty

That locker is from RCP, made for quite a few years now.

A 35T Holmes motor should provide good wheelspeed and low speed crawling using 14/87 gearing. A 3S battery would be better to power it though.

Tire Repair
This is the Rover I shaved a little bit to much
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/08/e6a5y3u7.jpg
I started by grinding the little rings so my patch will lay flat.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/08/u8a8uvyh.jpg
Then I glued on this patch I got from Walmart is just a bicycle tube repair kit $1.99
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/08/3eqe5yva.jpg
I let it dry for about 30 minutes then removed the clear plastic cover and applied more glue around the edge of the patch
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/08/y7egenu6.jpg
Make sure the patch is completely flat and let the extra glue dry(I waited an hour) before you flip the tire right side out

Ive tested this patch job for a couple of days now and it seems to be holding up just fine. I was going to buy a new tire and still will but after seeing how well the patch is holding ill wait till it fails before I switch it.

Nice job on fixing your "oops". It looks solid. I'm sure it will hold just fine.
Have you thought about shaving the patch a little to keep the softness uniform throughout the sidewall? Maybe you don't notice it....
Now you need to narrow your wheels to get some clearance back. Those tires all look flat!
Off to my brother's wedding. If I can get my junk put back together when I get back, I'll try to hook up with you at the park. I'd like to see the new tires in action.

Thanks dude! I haven't thought of shaving the patch that's an awesome idea. But honestly I haven't noticed it being a problem. Yesterday my novak 55t gave up so I soldered in a 55t tekin hd im hoping will fix my braking issues but I have to make a spacer for it. So after my coffee I'm off to the laboratory!

Awesome photo amigo. Gettysburg area rock is amazing. The dished shaped faces, car swallowing cracks, and staircase ledge systems are really fun.
I can't wait for my "new" AX10 to get here from my brother.
I absolutely love my MRC....but I want to span some of the sick gaps you drove that day...
However, I'm going to get my MRC to crawl up the "Ice Dihedral" before you make it....just to prove that (small) size does matter!

chris.martell 06-26-2013 04:08 PM

Brother that rock is insanely slick around devils den and also rather large. I think alot of the lines there are gonna go. Hurry your brother along and get that ax10 in your hands so we can go back and have some fun. As far as the ice dihedral goes theres no way you will send that before I do, I found it ill I have it's first accent!

New Chassis Design
It's time for me to bring my crawler into 2013 instead of 2008. While I love my SWX chassis the skid plate is way to long for me and being I can't drop over a 100 bucks on a new villain or sudu chassis I've decided to try my hand a designing my own. The picture is a rough design I conjured up using my SWX for base measurements for the shock mounting the only difference is the skid plate on my design should be 1" shorter and and around 1/2 in wider to get the spur gear back inside the twin vertical plates. I'll have to make longer lower and upper links for the rear of my rig but the front should remain the same. (I hope) Please feel free to put your 2 cents in I'll take all the help I can get. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/27/myryga5u.jpg

SPECS
Chassis material is .093 polycarbonate
Stiffeners are 1/8 aluminum
Skid plate is super slippery UHMW(ultra high molecular weight)

It's hard to tell but they are 1/8 of an inch taller and narrower. Unfortunately with all the hardware and the 625 slw they weigh in at the same weight of 5.6 oz

Re: 5.10 The old school shafty

Well, since your asking for opinions: Polycarbonate and UHMWPE are both known to be strong but flexy. The aluminum beams might help, but as they're attached with only a single screw each end, that limits how much stiffness they could add.

Now I don't know that a flexy chassis is bad. Torsion rigs rely on it. But it seems most people brag about how stiff they've made their chassis.

If you decide to stiffen yours, Hobbyking has a pretty good price on 1mm and 1.5mm woven carbon fiber sheet. I've found it to be better quality than some cheap sheets I bought off EBAY.

You might also want to add aluminum crossbraces where you bolt your side beams on.

Thanks for the imput I'll be making 2 more stiffiners tomorrow that will go between the single bolt on the aluminum side braces. As for the UHMW Skid plate I hope it will be solid enough being it such a small piece, but you are right it's definitely not as stiff as delrin. After I have tested this design and tweaked it to my liking I plan to make another chassis out of aluminum. Thanks for the imput:thumbup:

Re: 5.10 The old school shafty

In case you don't know...delrin isn't considered stiff either. For delrin skids, they usually make them pretty thick which makes for stiff. For chassis materials, stiff = aluminum, carbon fiber, maybe G10.

chris.martell 07-29-2013 07:24 PM

Sneek peak of the DiY chassis progress. It's really stiff and suspension geometry is very promising. A little more tweaking and ill be on to the final product.

That's a unique body ya got, what is it?
I haven't comped at Sam lewis Yet but it looks like I have to get there! I'm only a couple hours away in Williamsport.

EPA comps at Sam lewis. I was just talking with crackhead bout rausch creek in a few weeks, on the 17th. Tho sporty might be Fri night. Maybe make it over to join in. Class 2, 2.2p, an a scale poker/dash run(run what ya bring style) even ur sporty is legal for that..

The body is a proline Helios that I found at the local hobby shop. It has been discontinued but he has one more I was thinking about picking up before he closes his shop down.

So winner123 what did you think of crackheads mini? I personally think it's bad ass. He has a ton of work into it and it crawls amazing.

I would go pick it up for sure, just for the fact that its diff an looks good doin it!

As for that poor neglected mini work of art, with NO build thread, its pretty bad A$$! Wanting to see it crawl. My eyes needs some video at least!

I'm hoping you guys can make it to a comp... we run 1.9, class 1, an(other then rain last time) 2.2s Fri night.. camping or hotel, then comp Sat.. at rausch with the 1:1 guys wheeling beside us..

chris.martell 08-01-2013 07:14 AM

Im definitely interested in the comp but not sure my rig is ready to go up against sudu's and villian's. I've been waiting to run into the epa boys out at sam lewis just to see how mine compares to there rigs. Im wanting to widen my front axle but I just spent 100 bucks on VP knuckles and lock outs and chubs.

I'm going to get that body but since you like it so much id like for you to have it if you want it.

No worries, no sudo or villain chassis to worry bout.. the worst you have to worry bout is Bwd sss-rs. ;) unless turbofest is there. Then add a turbotech to that..

I'm set with a couple bodies now, but get it. Something like that could go over big for a bargaining chip for someone that just Can't not have it.

As for the XR steering.. mucho benefits! Steering(duh) an reaching for ledges or getting ur tire over a rock an turning the wheel into it for more bite, the list goes on an on... the width adds to stability an keeps you planted, not only on sidehills but helps everywhere. IMO, its a huge win win all around.

Thanks for the info that makes it easier to stomach the 100 dollar loss on the VP 8° set I just recently purchased. But 8 have been contiplateting getting the smooth tubes and just running the 8° knuckles I have cause to be quite honest it's a lot better steering than a stock setup but I just cant use there full potential without going wider caise they bind up in my shocks enough to stop my rig from moving. Pluse another benefit im looking forward to is the xr universals cause the axial CVD's seem to lock up and cause the rig to buck at full lock. How much more than 45° of steering do you get out of the Xr mod? I can get at least 45° out of the setup I have know if I was to use the xr universals.
