I'll watch this! I like the axles. How do they hold up. I am assuming there are aluminium spools inside the casings. How do the gears inside there do? If ya know!!

1BadJeepBruiser 11-25-2007 06:32 PM

Exactly what the problem is on the PTI, that's why I asked. I have issues in my Nitro TC. Let along in a bound up crawler with killer Brushless torque.

Sorry Unimog for gumming up the thread. I think the axles are sweet. This is going to be a nice build!"thumbsup"

k9popo 11-25-2007 08:36 PM

Ben, I hope you like the chassis and it works well for ya;-) this is going to be a saweet build asshole...

Racer4life-You have to run a slipper on your tranny with these axles...It will help save your gears and CVD's...

And I have only seen 1 gear set strip in these axles...They are AMAZING, I have a set waiting for a chassis"thumbsup"

Thanks I consider myself lucky to have the axles, Mike and I talked many moons ago about a set for me someday and last week, that someday came true. I also feel lucky to have gotten a chassis, these fat-dogs are a work of art."thumbsup"

ElChupacabra 11-25-2007 09:36 PM

Thats ridiculous. Honestly amazing...

fathead 11-25-2007 09:57 PM

sweet set-up Ben, I cant wait to see it finished:)

FrankyRizzo 11-25-2007 10:16 PM

Oh boy!!! We get to see another build in that "crappy" shop of yours..... sheesh

lunchbox 11-25-2007 11:15 PM

Is it just me, or are those axles just begging for a torsion chassis? Grind the Link Tabs off out by the knuckles, fab up a nice BTA steering setup... never mind, they look fantastic with that chassis.

Red Rockcrawler 11-26-2007 01:31 AM

Nice work Ben can't wait to see this rig in May. How the little one coming here yet?

ColquittCustom405 11-26-2007 02:26 AM

Nice Ben...real nice"thumbsup"

Yes, they do run plastic gears, but they're not weak.

If you bind it up hard with brushless power, you will strip them. However, why bind the rig up that hard? If it's bound up hard enough to strip the gears, it's not a situation where you're going to drive it out anyways? I'm all for testing the limits so you can see how hard you can push the rig before it will break, but after you know, you wouldn't keep breaking it just to break it, right?

As for the solution to the "problem," run a tranny w/ a slipper. Lock the slipper down nice and tight so that it only slips right before the axles would break. That's what pretty much everyone locally running these axles does. It works too. I've seen more broken CVD bones with these axles than I have ring and pinions. I don't know if that's because they're the weak point torque-wise or if it's because they get bent on a hard tumble and then snap at the bend via torque...but they've proven to be the "weak link" in the drivetrain.

That said, everyone who runs the axles absolutely loves them and considers them to be worth every penny they cost. I want to pick up a set one of these days...if I ever find money...

aggressivellc 11-26-2007 11:22 AM

Looks good man cant wait to see this one finished Ive always loved those axles.

Wrecker 11-26-2007 11:25 AM

binaryterror 11-26-2007 12:45 PM

How do you go about buying a set of these axles? I did a search with not much coming up as a purchase point.

You have to know someone ;-) he he
www.mpcrawlers.com

Yes they run plastic gears I've stripped 2 of them but it was because I had them shimmed wrong. After I got them shimmed right I have not had any problems with the gears. I have broken a few bones but in the few cases I think I would've broken my TLT's also.

I love these axles. After running these axles I could never go back to a standard axles

Here is a link to my build on these axles

Ben, OMG.... OK so I'm envious Poulson axles....Fat Dog tubes.... to bad you couldn't find a descent set of wheels to fit up this truck. Just kidding that's what envy does to people. Looks like no slipper clutch is being planned for this rig? Can't wait for the rest of this build so get busy right after you get my new wheels in the mail. "thumbsup"

Mike Poulson 11-30-2007 11:40 AM

Ben,

I can help fix you up with an B4 slipper for the Axial trans. I just did one for another Axial\Poulson rig and it came out pretty good.

Mike

Mike Poulson 12-15-2007 12:35 PM

Ben

If you remove the bottom king pins from the steering knuckles the axle will sit flat. Then set the chassis on 1.25" block. You can set up the links and shocks and it will give you the ride height you were talking about.

Mike

Unimoger 12-15-2007 12:41 PM

thanks Mike, will do, slipper is great btw."thumbsup"

should be a roller tomorrow, having a baby slowed me down. :)
