bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I'm very excited for the new Axial RR10 Bomber to be released and have an RTR on pre-order. Although a kit would be preferred, I just cannot wait that long and the whole machine will be dissembled and re-built anyway. I'm sure hoping that late November release date is accurate.

My DMG Wraith is configured very similarly to the Bomber with a trailing arm rear suspension and short back and it crawls so incredibly well, including some mind-blowing rock bouncing! With that being said, I know the RR10 will perform just as good when I am done building it (which like my Wraith, is never really finished!).

I have a good portion of the required parts in hand, ready to go. I also have a parts ordered from RPP that I will have next week. I've been dying to find an excuse to order the SSD diamond axles and now I do, they will suit this build perfectly. I was going to hold out for the new Vanquish F9 Currie axles, but they are taking too long to get the AR60 released, besides, the DMG Wraith has Currie axles and I want to give SSD axles a try....they look so good!

I'm not a fan of rear spare tires because of the unwanted rear weight bias, but it's important to keep the true look of the Bomber so I will be using RC Bros knuckle weights to offset.

Here's the parts list so far:

Blue Monkey RC Yeti Trailing Arms
Blue Monkey RC Titanium Rear Upper Links
Vanquish Wraith Titanium Front Upper & Lower Links

Mamba Max Pro (Waterproof)
Castle BEC
Holmes Hobbies TrailMaster BL Sport 540 3300KV (Waterproof)

Vanquish Wraith Steering Knuckles; Orange
Vanquish Shock/Link Mounts; Grey
RC Bros Knuckle Weight Kit

MIP X-Duty Rear C-Drive Kit, Axial Yeti; Rear

Definitely looking forward to this one after the Wraith build you've been doing. I too have my preorder in and a nice little collection of upgrades forming on my workbench (dinner table). I knew you'd be the first one to get after it bilinvic and I'm sure this won't disappoint. Really looking forward to video of yours in action.

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

Thanxs guys. I was wanting to get the new Kraken Vekta.5 or the X-Maxx, but this unexpected announcement from Axial redirected my focus. Going fast and bashing is fun, but not as much as fun as hard-core crawling and this Bomber has my name written all over it! I've got a few ideas in my head and hopefully they are doable when I get this beast into my possession.

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I like your list of upgrades. I am probably going to run mine stock, except for metal suspension links and beadlocks, and replace things as they break. I've picked out the same motor/esc combo after I get bored with stock. How do you think the SSD beadlocks would look on this rig?

bilinvic 11-14-2015 07:59 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

As much as I like the SSD Assassin wheels, I don't think they suit the Bomber.

MeanTT 11-14-2015 10:34 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

May I suggest you actually drive the rig before you decide on suspension components? It seems to make very limited sense to buy replacement parts without anyone actually able to give a report regarding its driving characteristics. I presume you will need sway bars with that motor unless you go 2S and gear down.

bilinvic 11-14-2015 11:47 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I have a crawler's dream backyard for testing and tuning, it's all natural bedrock with some extreme lines. I use the same lines for all my rigs so I can compare different set-ups. I'll take the stock Bomber thru the same testing grounds to determine a baseline of it's performance. I won't likely be using or needing sway bars because this Bomber's primary purpose will be crawling and bouncing. My two other trailing arm crawlers definitely don't require sway bars either. I plan on gearing 10T/56T to start and running 3S; That seems to be the sweet spot for this HH motor.

YJ4Rox 11-15-2015 06:46 AM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I'm running the 3300kv HH motor with10/56 and 43/13 in my wraith, I agree it's the sweet spot for trail/crawl/bouncing. If I was primarily bashing/bouncing I would run an 11t pinion.

Can't wait to see some video of your bomber build, that's a good parts list. Maybe the 2.2 voodoo klr will be out by the time the kit hits the market.

I keep telling myself to wait for the kit but it's going to be hard.

I have one on order as well!
I'm extremely new to this and and in the process of finishing my sons wraith.
I wanted to build one with trailing arms too. I think I might machine some out of titanium. Can wait for this build!

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I replaced the majority of the hardware with stainless steel. The guts of the front axle contain an Axial Heavy Duty Bevel Gear Set 38T/13T, a Gripfab SS Spool and Vanquish Wraith VVD V1-HD 4mm Stubs. The SSD diamond axle is absolutely beautiful and is metal art by itself! As far as I am concerned, the SSD axles will offer better performance than the F9 Currie axles because the SSD Delrin skid will make quite a difference for minimizing hang-ups.

Looks awesome. The orange knuckles will go real nice with that orange pinstriping of the RR10s panels. I love it when you can run the draglink behind the servo horn too. Just looks a lot cleaner to me. Any thoughts on shocks yet and have you thought about what setup you're going to run as far as Yeti or Wraith length rears?

bilinvic 11-18-2015 07:27 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

Thanxs SCREAMER.

I have the Vanquish CHubs in orange too, but they don't clamp like the VP scale CHubs do. That being said, the SSD axle tubes seem to have more "meat" to screw into than the other metal axles I have. Maybe I will throw them on.

Yes, I prefer the drag link behind the servo arm too, it aligns more square to the axle as well.

I have the new RC4WD Short Course rear King shocks that I have been tuning...might use these but I'm not absolutely sure yet.

Very nice. I guess you'll be the first to find out if a centered rear driveshaft clears the new transmission housing. I hope it does. I've got a centered Currie that I'm dying to put on my RR10 the moment it shows up.

bilinvic 11-19-2015 05:26 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I can't see any reason that the centered rear wouldn't work, I've been studying the pics and there seems to be plenty of clearance for the rear driveshaft to angle slightly towards the center. Regardless, fingers are crossed!

SCREAMER 11-19-2015 05:53 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

1 Attachment(s)
It's not the left to right angle, it's the up and down travel I'm worried about. There's a couple pics, one specifically, that shows how close the driveshaft is to the spur gear cover. In the stock location the driveshaft has a decent amount of upward clearance. The spur cover then angles downward as it transitions toward the center of the skid. That's the point of contact I'm worried about. Here you can see that as soon as you start to angle the rear (left side) of the driveshaft more towards the center of the car it starts to lose clearance for upward suspension travel. Hopefully not. Like I said, I really want to run a centered rear on mine too.

One of the clearance issue is on the receiver box and the lower link if you want to install MIP front shaft. I tried the ax and the wraith. I clearance the receiver box and then the lower control arm hits the drive shaft. So I went all back to stock and will wait and see how all this plays out.

Did you use the two short ends? Heard of others doing this and then letting the rub just work its way out.

bilinvic 12-05-2015 10:24 PM

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

My initial impression is what a great looking machine; the performance definitely needs some help though. The shocks are way too soft (hence the crazy torque twist) and of course, the stock electronics just don't make the grade. That was after a mere two minute test drive in my shop...then the tear down commenced.

Please keep in mind, everything I am doing right now is for mock-up and once I am satisfied, I will tear down again ensuring Loctite and grease is used accordingly during the re-build.

Front links are VP Wraith Ti uppers and lowers with Revo link ends.
Front driveshaft is JunFac ardened universal shaft 120-155mm. The Junfac driveshaft has proven to be extremely reliable with my BL powered rigs and their smaller diameter (compared to MIP) looks more the part.

The gunmetal STRC motor mount is installed with the Holmes Hobbies Trail Master BL 540 3100 kV motor. For now, I'll stick with the stock gearing of 12T/64T and see how that performs.

Re: bilinvic's RR10 Bomber Build

I couldn't use the regular Axial Wraith servo mount plate and the VP aluminum servo mounts; it located the servo too far forward and the servo would be obstructed by the front bumper under minimal suspension articulation. I used the stock RR10 one-piece servo mount and flipped it backwards. This put the servo in a perfect position relative to the bumper resulting in 100% articulation with no interference. (Only two screws for mock-up)

Going to try the collars from chamber fab and use those on the wb hds and see how it goes. Looks like things will get sorted out if I plan on using them for a center diff later. Or might send them back. Lots of cash in driveshafts.

The electronics are sorted out. I did have to move the MMP rearward after this photo was taken to clear the rear battery compartment panel.

Regarding the center rear axle and MIP driveshaft, here are some pics with the rear suspension compressed.

1. With the driver's side compressed. It's hard to tell the driveshaft is clearing the spur cover, but you can clearly see light between the shaft and housing.

2. With the passenger side compressed. There's approximately 3mm of clearance.

3. With both sides fully compressed. Note: I did add a rubber bump-stop so that the top of the SSD link mount wouldn't travel beyond the chassis underneath the fuel cell.
