I have the XL5 in one crawler and it works well, but no drag brake.

The plus is that you can get them used for cheap, are woterproof, and have a lifetime replacement waranty. Anything happens to it you just pay a "handling fee" and you get a new one.

If you are looking at buying one new than there are better options. Used you can often find them for $30, in which case they are a good value.

Why do you want a change in esc? What do you want from the new one that the old one didn't have?

The XL-5 is pretty smooth and both of mine have been reliable.. But the double pump reverse and lack of drag brake makes them useless for anything other than a light duty trail rig.

I really like my Mamba Max, it is nice and adjustable like the BRXL.

Best choice out there in my opinion.

I dont know about the newer ones but at one time the XL5 also didnt have a lipo cutoff and who runs a heavy nimh stick pack in any kind of crawler anymore? Especially when there lighter and a small 2-3s lipo can be had cheeper than a stick pack.
