Brat Build(easy, cheap)(new rear bumper!!) this is a build to mount a tamiya brat body on a stock scx10 frame(no welding or custom frames) that is easy, cheap and still be able to change it back to a stock truck if you want. my goal was to build it so the average user could do it and then change it back if they wished using common handtools. you already have most parts(minus links and post) from your spare parts that came with your trucks. here is what the finished project will look like. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0222121817.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0222121816.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...222121817a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...222121817b.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0222121818.jpg you notice no bumpers! the reason being, everybody will use their own bumper style more than likely. |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) more information about how it got started is here http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...ml#post3566336 |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) sweet now i can build the newest fad on rcc just like everyone else! |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) Brat fad was about 2007. "thumbsup" |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) and tight jeans were 87... not h8n, just have seen 3 (edit) make that 4 seperate brat threads active in the last 3 days! |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) parts you will need.parts tree ax80043-1 (4 link truss), ax80084 (short driveshaft parts) ax80031-4 assorted axial links and post or the aluminum upgrade kit. not sure of the link sizes in the upgrade kit's but you can buy the post from 10mm to 70mm in 5mm steps, or a way of making your own links( can be done with the tool's used in this build) tools you will need. a drill or drill press(easier), 1/8 inch or 3mm drill bit, hacksaw or dremel tool with cut off disc or cut off tool, and a caliper or a way of measuring accurate mm's, and of course the normal hex's and screwdriver's and such. |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) First you will need to disassemble your truck to get to the frame rail's. next bolt the frame rail's together on the ends like so. makes it easier to cut both at the same time and keep them straight with each other. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121309.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121310.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121310a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121310b.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121310c.jpg |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) cut 22mm's off the back (the one the says axial) and 16mm's off the front. keep the rail's bolted together. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121312.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121314.jpg |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) while the rail's are still together, take the peice you cut off the back and lay it on the end so you can mark where to drill your hole for the brace/bumper mount.http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121312a.jpg drill a 3mm or 1/8 inch hole at the larger of the holes. you can also drill the small hole if you want but i didn't http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...23121312-1.jpg |

Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) I was thinking the same thing. I guess we'll just have to wait for the next installment to see a possible Resurrection. |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap, reversible) well semi reversible. you can still return to using the original body and still use the dingo back bumper, however, the stock front bumper will be harder to use. |

Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap) while you have your grinder (or dremel tool) out, lets do the servo plate and battery plate. this is how i marked the servo plate http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121251.jpg this is after being filed http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121326.jpg now if you run the battery up front like most, we need to grind it to fit also. start by grinding one end like so http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121315a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121315.jpg next, i used the battery cage to mark where i needed to drill the 2 holes in the plate.http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121316.jpg just put a screw through the plate and cage on the end and drilled the 2 holes where the 2 closest to the screw was in the cage.http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121316a.jpg |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap) next we'll start on the rear axle. for this we need 2 60mm links for the lower and 2 55mm links for the top. you may have enough stuff to make the right lenght already in your parts box, such as a 55mm post + a 5mm or 6mm post(yes that makes it 61mm's but not to worry)http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0224121254.jpg point being there's all sorts of ways to make that length. you will use the 4 link truss from part tree ax80043 on the rear. attach 2 55mm post as shownhttp://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0221121956.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0221121957.jpg notice the curved link ends(parts tree ax80005) and the direction's. now just attach the lower links(60mm) as usual except put a spacer where the shock would go instead of the shockhttp://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...224121256a.jpghttp://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...216121614a.jpg |
Re: Brat Build(easy,cheap) Cool build"thumbsup" ...my eyes hurt!! |

and thanks for the encouragement"thumbsup" |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap) now take the rear shock hoop's and grind, cut, or sand the body post mounts off even with the top of the hoop. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...216121615a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0216121615.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0223121253.jpg don't worry, I'll show you how to use your body post and the hoop to mount it. next disassemble your drive shafts and get the short drive shaft's from parts tree ax80084. you still need to cut both parts of the rear one down to 28mm. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...225121828a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0225121829.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...225121829a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0225121833.jpg just assemble drive shaft's back and there you have it. now on the shocks, I'm using a longer than stock shock so i mounted the bottom end to the axle using a longer screw in the straight axle adapter.(you may not need to with stock shocks)http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0224121256.jpghttp://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...224121256a.jpg if you look back at the above pictures you'll notice i put a spacer at the top also(can't remember what parts tree it came from, but it's in the extra part's) |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap) now for the body mounting. get parts tree ax80031 part number 4 on the tree. take a screw of the right length and pass it through one of the shock hoop holes your not using(i used the middle one) and screw the mount onto the side of the hoop http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...224121258a.jpg now just slide your post in the mount and adjust to the height you want. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0224121259.jpg (tip: put them in upside down to let it set a little lower(on top of the shock hoops)) |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(finishing the rear axle) hmmmm.... not much interest showing:cry: |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(finishing the rear axle) suggestion's, critiques, are appreciated"thumbsup" |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(finishing the rear axle) I think it's good, and I'm collecting bits to start a brat/scx10 build myself. So I watch! Curious how long those axles will hold out, with the shocks direct mounted like that. |

thanks for pointing that out:) |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(finishing the rear axle) on the front axle it was basically standard except swapping out the links. i used 80mm on the lower links( again you can make this length in many different ways) and 55mm post with the standard 3 link y up top http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121251a.jpg mounted the brace with the battery post to the front( you could use the bumper mount brace if not running your battery up front) http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...223121251b.jpg again i swapped the drive shaft parts out for the short versions on the extra parts tree, no cutting required"thumbsup". also cut the battery mount spacer down 5mm's http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0227121541.jpg this gets the battery plate down lower and sits it down on top of the receiver box. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0224121258.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...224121257a.jpg you could cut down the other 2 spacers also but i didn't ( the receiver box stop's it) |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(time for the front axle) now your pretty much done, any questions or suggestion's are welcome. got some more planned for the "BIG BRAT" |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(time for the front axle) got the rc4wd Stubby bumper and winch in and mounted up. think it looks good on the brat body. not to wide, room for a winch and a little protection for the front. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0229121117.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...229121117a.jpg have a rear bumper that i'm thinking of running, need to take off the bumper on the brat body and that way it will sit closer and higher to the body( about where the stock one is now). would like some opinions before i cut the body up though please. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...229121118a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0229121119.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0229121118.jpg |

Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(Bumper's Added!!) Looks great, I am building one too, we can share ideas. I like this body because it has a low center of gravity. |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(Bumper's Added!!) i have always been a fan of the brat. plus it was something different than the hilux, jeep, fj40, crowd. would love to get the body lower and cover the frame more, still have a few things planned. |
Re: Brat Build(easy,cheap)(action shot's!!) a few action shot's. http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0301121436.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0301121444.jpg all flex'd out:mrgreen: http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0301121439.jpg still needing opinion's on what to do about rear bumper |
Re: Brat Build(easy, cheap)(action shot's!!) wasn't getting many opinions about what to do on the bumper, so i went ahead and cut the stock bumper off using the thread methd http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...302121817a.jpg mounted my other bumper closer to the body http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0302121817.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...302121816a.jpg http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/...0302121816.jpg i think it looks good. the d-ring mount is also removable and can be used as a hitch mount."thumbsup" |
