I've played with a few types of models but this is quickly becoming my favorite. Pulled apart my creeper today and some of the gears are shot. Darn. Plenty of parts for a 2.2 scaler. Truck came as painted. I loved the rusty metal look but it was backed by some odd black paint that flaked horribly. Specs: SCX 10 kit truck, aluminum links (3 not 4), stock trans/axles/drive axles, Traxxas 27 MHz 2 channel transmitter with matching receiver, Futaba 3305 servo, Novak Rooster ESC with 55 turn motor, stock battery tray and radio locations, several NiMh batts reconditioned at Batteries Plus including one built by the previous owner. Initially I debated on leaving it as is until I could take a bundle of ones and fives to CKRC. On the way home I dropped by the shop and bought two things. TWO THINGS! One was a CKRC aluminum servo arm and the other some 40 weight shock fluid. Of course I could have spent more but with forty bucks in my pocket and a rumbly in my tumbly that's all that I felt necessary. The crossmember was obstructing front axle travel via the steering servo. The radio box was lowered slightly and the battery tray assembly was secured on top. I tend to Velcro and zip tie electronics due to bad experiences with double sided tape. ESC was dangerously close to the front drive axle so it had to be moved. I'm still using the NiMh batts since the can get wet with little worry but a few smaller lipos may be in order. Paint is just some Krylon Ultra Flat Black Fusion paint. Looking back I wish I would have dusted the black on and kept some of the metal/rust color. 3am is not polite to artistic views. Aside from shimming the links a little to square up the stance and articulation I threw on some beadlocked RC4WD TSL Boggers because they look cool. The body was pretty well thrashed so some trimming was done to prevent further snags and tears. Tore down my Creeper this afternoon. It's been catching oddly when I drove it and it had a 45 turn Novak in it which is now in the SCX. I've been looking to transform the Creeper so it may be donating vital parts to a 2.2 scaler in the near future. Since the motor was coming out I figured now was the time to start with the water resisting step. Tore apart the tranny and it was moderately coated around the bearings with marine grease. Not sure about the other tranny gear but hardened outdrives will be installed in the near future. |

Re: Long time lurker, first time posting The steel outdrives are a must. The two plastic trans gears are rather robust, especially if your let the slipper work. If you stick with the plastic Traxxas shafts you'll likely never get a chance to strip the trans gears. Took me a year to strip out the idler, and then it was in with Robinsons one piece lower and idler gears. Welcome to THE addiction. I have fleet of RC cars, but the SCX sees more use and abuse than any of the rest. The CF100 body looks good with the high clearanced rockers and flat black. Mines half black. http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/...sRandom199.jpg You'll like the 40 weight oil with the extra weight of that Nimh. You can prolong the life of the plastic knuckles by making a tie bar out of plate steel or aluminum with two holes drilled in it to connect the upper kingpin bolt to the tie rod/drag link bolt. I made mine out of a Blitz front tie bar, just cut down and opened up one of the holes. Use a washer and grease on the upper kingping bolt and only snug the bolt to where you can't easily rotate the washer. Lipo's don't need any special preparation before dunking them. I've been regularly submerging Turnigy 5000mah 20C 2s packs for almost a year now. If you plan on playing submarine it's worth your while to round up some small 3 or 4mm setscrews and drill holes in the axle and trans cases. Then you can pump them full of grease with a regular needle fitting on a grease gun. |

Ive sold every nitro truck and the Dingo is the best truck Ive ever owned. I use mine for a trail truck and enjoy it. Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Got the Creeper up today but there is still some odd binding in the front bearing. Gonna ride it til it dies then replacing the tranny with an Axial one and switching to a metal tube chassis if not switch it to an SCX chassis all together. On the way home today I saw an early 70s long bed Chevy on a trailer and would love to see it in the stable. The height Boggers have over the Flat Irons is astounding. Im hoping to get a new body soon but I'm going to wait on getting too in depth with the scale work until I have another to cycle out driving and working on. The current body may end up chopped and bobbed around a crawler cage. With it's curves and tattered edges it should fit well. Thanks for all the tips. I think I like the added weight of the NiHm adds to the scale feel that is oh so appealing. The Creeper is setup with a Sidewinder and 55 turn Novak on 3s. The Axial tranny that goes into it will definitely be getting hardened gears before it runs. With the weight of the massive 2.2s pushed by CKRC drivelines I'm sure the stock gears would get destroyed. As for this truck I've had very little issues in that aspect. I do plan on gluing some dowels or thick metal wire into the stock drivelines for rigidity but the scale style wheel spin and lack of breakage issues are more than welcome. Gotta get to geasing and dipping tomorrow. I'd love to get mud sometime next week. Tomorrow we are off to Developers Dunes, a bundle of dirt and gravel hills in the undeveloped portion of our neigborhood. Maybe this weekend Rattlesnake Hill. It is a prehistoric volcanic hill just down the street. The pit I drive in offers so many different terrain variances that I have to take someone with me otherwise I'd stay there until dark. Pics and hopefully vids to follow. This has been such an amazing site to visit, it's too bad there aren't more locals involved in crawling/scaling. |

Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Still experimenting with it all. Desperately need a grip pod and tripod and Flipshare is not cutting it due to clashing Mac issues. I'd love to do some editing of the footage. On the way back to the truck there was an awesome sand bank I had to try. Got about a foot up and was buried almost to the top of the Boggers before I got no response from the motor. Steering worked so after getting back to the truck I found the drivetrain bound something fierce. After packing up the family I got home and pulled off the pinion gear. Drivetrain spun freely but motor seized. Figured on rinsing before panicking paid off. The motor must have had a quarter teaspoon of sand in it and a nice black carbon ring around the water bowl was a prime indicator of something that probably should have been done long ago. After some swishing and wet runs in the bowl the 45 turn was as good as before. Just wish I'd gotten a pic of the sandy carbon ringed bowl. |

Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Yup. Haven't heard much from locals here. The only people I heard meeting to trail/crawl were guys from CKRC last week when I was in the shop. Definitely looking to get out with like minded (crazy, obsessive, fanatic) people to run my stuff. Should have waterproofing done before the 4th of July. |

Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Mines on the ragged edge of scrap. Not sure what I'll switch to but mid 50s Fords have always been my favorites. I'm thinking this one will end up on a 2.2 tuber project. Amain still has the 50s Chevy body in the off road truck section or some such. |

Awesome that you knew the guy that bought the Creeper. Didn't want to get rid of it but he seemed very happy testing it on truck stop rocks. More mutilated parts. This time the Boggers got the bad end of the trimmers. They were good to begin with but now they are on the edge of great. Next is some 3000-4000 mah 2s lipos. The ones I have weigh a hair more than the NiMh packs I'm using. 5000 mah is a crap ton of run time but it's still too much weight. Weighted the rears 3 ounces and it handles awesome except for that top end pull on the rear. Can't relocate to the front until, and only if, I do CMS. Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Running Gens Ace 5000 mah 2s 50c battery in the truck. It actually weighs a little less than the NiHm packs and already I'm loving the truck more. Changing to non Deans plugs on all my stuff and ordered some 2500mah 25c 2s batts to lose a little more weight. Also have a Novak 35 turn on the way. Experimenting with the SC truck and had the motor/esc dismounted yesterday. Hard not to throw it into the Axial. Still a bit confounded. Without accurate enough control on the esc I simply put it on the lowest throttle response (sc1200-BL with 3500kv 550) and could hardly keep from wheel stands and backflips with the slightest throttle. After putting the brushed system back in I was able to grease and pack the rear axle after inspection for damage. Running Gens Ace 2500mah 25c 2s, added and trimmed RC4WD bumper and sliders found here in the For Sale section, and cut some aluminum sheet and screwed it to the body posts for better fastening of the body. Next I'm thinking new drivelines and possibly a CMS setup with panhard bar. I'm thinking about moving it all to the back yard (this is the side by our new garden) and start the dirt hill for my son (and me of course). Better lighting, not near his window when he's sleeping, and away from the distracting A/C unit. We love a stone grill in one of the local parks and there may be something in the works for the next few years. Not really looking to build a park with so many awesome crawling/trailing places adjacent to our house but having a mild practice area that is lightly decorative is the goal. http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...-20-51_570.jpg This is the configuration I'll run until a new rig comes along or a brushless system presents itself. Hoping to get a new motor in the next month. This one works but is definitely not the Pro Wound Novak 45 turn that was in it. Possibly Holmes for the next one. Aside from that we are adding a CKRC supplied CMS this weekend after we get to SLC for "vacation". Need to find an appropriate shock set. The stock set runs good but I've noticed it's a bit too springy on flat ground and (obviously) doesn't retain shock fluid. The ride height surprisingly doesn't contribute much to rollovers and has a well desired amount of clearance. MIP will more than likely be getting the lunch money for some new drivelines and a Proline body/Honcho bed mashup is where I'm leaning unless I find the right 70s Ford body. I still regret having to cut out the rocker panels but the constant hammering would have led to further body damage. Now that the sliders are on I think the new body will fare much better. Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Finally got out yesterday and shot some footage after all these changes. Other than the beaten lid and the "speed" gears I'm pretty happy. Hoping to hit up Holmes for a much better motor than the Novak basher that's in it now. Wheel speed is good but stalls and diminished drag brake grab really worked against the truck and made for a little fight. Also, the first three minutes was actually the last bit shot. The 2500mah 2s Gens Ace lipo was hooked up for an hour and did all the climbing filmed along with some runs on a sandy hill ending at 7.44 volts. I could smell the motor and walked it back to the truck. Temp gun read 205-215 degrees Fahrenheit on the motor. Still ran fine but with no real gains with speed gearing it's pretty much getting stock gears reinstalled. All that said, not a terrible little run. Just hoping to afford some better components soon. The Novak cheapie definitely has to go, the bed is heavy and needs front side counter balance, and A shock change may be in order. Other than those things I really like this rig. The wheel base seems right, 2s pushes scale speed and capability to believeable terms, and it has enough grip to pop over trail obstacles with relative ease. Sadly I may have to lose the metal bed for the Honcho bed but some trimming may give it the appearance I'm looking for. Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Had to go back to axial axles, too much lack of steering in CMS setup. Might go back to level 3 CMS with panhard. As for the bed, I'll have to look it up. Without a weighty scale body and accessories it has a bad rear weight offset. Add: Couldn't find a weight on the bed. With the spare it is definitely weightier. Might handle better with wider tires but I love the way the Lox look on this rig. |
Re: Long time lurker, first time posting Definitely improved. Went to the switcharoo Castle SV2/Integy 45 turn setup, stock shocks, and Honcho bed.
