Curious what you guys recommend for a servo. I do mostly slow speed crawling. Also does anyone make a kit with like servo and knuckles and all? Think the steering is my next step so any help would be great! Thanks

Alright... No kit exists. But, there is hope. Go to Blue Monkey RC for steering linkage & suspension linkage with 4-link conversion plate for front. You'll need to buy Traxxas Revo rod ends, but you won't regret it. It'll be a great set up. Steering Linkage Front Suspension Linkage Rear Suspension Linkage For cHubs and Knuckles, I would recommend going to Vanquish Products. Nuff said there. Go ahead and get the Stage 1 Kit, you'll save a few bucks and you'll get the rear lockouts too. Stage 1 Kit As for the servo, you'll want a heavy hitter if you'll be doing slow speed crawling. At least 400oz per inch torque. I recommend theHitec RCD HS-M7990TH Digital Mega Torque HV Coreless TG. It won't let you down in the performance dept, and if it fails, Hitech will take good care of you. Get it Here You could wait on the suspension linkage... Steering upgrade is a must though. Do it right, and you'll only have to do it once. It'll cost more up front, but it's better than breaking it, then paying to fix it, then repeating the process until you figure out that you should have listened the first time... LOL There are cheaper servos that would do the trick... But they'll run you at least $100, and if you're going to spend that much, you might as well get the big dog!!! You can do as cephas recommends and go straight for a top level steering servo, but to recommend atleast 400oz/in of torque is a over-the-top wild, IMO, for low speed scale crawling. If you are running huge tires on a really heavy rig and plan to bash it around a bit then there is some piece of mind to be had with a $100+ servo. I do the same type of crawling with a ~5lbs rig and average 1.9 tire size and the Hitec 5465 has been more than I've needed so far. There is a point where any more torque is just overkill for a given rig, and the deciding factor should be durability (strength of the gear set inside the servo). The 7950 is very strong and will hold up to punishment and should be considered for that reason, not because of the insane torque (150-200oz/in should be perfectly fine for the average scaler). If you are a controlled crawler and don't abuse your rig you would be fine with a servo costing a fraction of the 7950.

I have been using the Hitec HS-7954SH on my Wraith that is setup for crawling. It has 403 oz of torque if you run it at 7.4 volts with a BEC. HS-7954SH - Hitec RCD You can get the servo and CC BEC for a little under $100.00 Hitec HS-7954SH High Torque HV Coreless Steel Gear Servo - Powerhobby.com |

How heavy is your rig? Running 1.9"s only, or do you see 2.2"s in your near future? Are you a "when in doubt, throttle out", or more of a "slow and easy when in a bind" kind of guy? Running LiPo's? What is your favorite color? (JK) Last edited by BodiBuilt; 02-11-2013 at 04:47 PM.

I'm so new I don't even understand some of the terms you all use. My plan is to run 2.2 tires. I'm very easy on my rig nothing crazy yet. We will see where the hobby takes me . There is always a budget. If I can keep it around 100 I would be fine with that

When it comes down to your steering servo IMO this is one area you should not fall short. Invest in the best one for your particular need's that still fall's within your personal budget. Personally speaking, I am (also) a fan of HiTec servo's, and they offer several suitable versions for you to consider. For additional reference, I went with a HS-7955TG for my Scx-10 build Last edited by BodiBuilt; 02-11-2013 at 08:54 PM.

Hmm, $100 budget...I'll say HS-7955TG too, or HS-7954SH If you want to run 7.4 volts.

Hobbies sells a basic servo that produces 350oz of torque for about 80.00. They are rebranded hitec servos Sent from my HTC One VX using Tapatalk 2 |

Another vote for the HS7954SH. Great performance and support for the price. |

i run a hitec 7955TG on my ax10 but will be putting one in my scx10 when i can get to the hobby shop next... what i have found on my ax10 since i dont run a BEC is that i have to run batteries that have a 30-45c rating because the 7955 takes a lot of juice.... |

7954 would be more than enough for a light weight 2.2 scaler. The 7990 is exactly the same as a 7980 torque wise and is a plus size servo meaning it's bigger than a standard servo and there is no need for that in a scaler. The 7954 is a great servo and can be had for around $80 if you shop around. The 7950 is a top of the line standard size servo but it more in the $130-150 range.

Another suggestion for you if ou don't like $80+ servos, is the Savox SC-0251MG High Torque Metal Gear Digital Servo. They offer 222 oz-in of torgue and the Savox nme brand for onl $35 on eBay. That's 3 times as strong as the stock scaler servos in SCX10 rtrs, for a small amount of money. Whether or not that will be enough for you will depend on how extreme you run your rig. Maybe not ideal for TTC, but good enough, especially at this price, for 90% of crawler apps.

Clearly, y'all aren't from Texas. ;) good call on the HS-7950TH. That's actually the servo I meant to recommend. I was writing an article for Hitech and I copied the wrong text and pasted it in. My bad on that wing dinger of a whoops. They're all correct in stating that other servos would be adequate. I Gand to go with having more than I need so that I never find myself needing more. Not everyone agrees with that philosophy, which is fine. Lots of good advise here. Last edited by TheScaleAddict; 02-12-2013 at 03:05 PM. |
