Default 43t/13t beveled underdrive gear problem

I just picked up a new rear SCX10 axle from another member here and it has a brand new set of 43t/13t HD underdrive gears installed. I noticed there seems to be a lot of play in the pinion. Probably an 1/8" or more. Anyone else ever notice this? The gear mesh is also affect by this, when the pinion is pushed in towards the diff the gears feel like they're grinding and when it's pulled away from the diff everything spins free and smooth. I'm thinking when a driveshaft is installed it should hold the pinion the proper distance from the diff though right?

The driveshaft installed might limit the pinion gear from going too far into the ring gear. Don't know till you try it. You can always shim the outside of the pinion output. Between the driveshaft and the case bearing.

I just installed over and under and with MIPS I got a space between driveshaft and bearing used some traxxas shims and fixed it.

Cool, I'm gonna throw a drive shaft on it tonight and see where it sits. I had plenty of pinions that needed shimming in towards the ring gear but I can't say I've ever had one that needed shimming out. I'll post results later tonight. Thx!

Just got home and tried a couple different drives shafts I had. The best fit was an Axial WB8. It pulled the out pinion out just a hair further and helped but I'll still need a shim.

I needed a full on washer to shim mine right on the last AX10 I worked on.
