Dingo to Bug Got a Dingo kit for Christmas this year. I've know about it for a month as my 8 year old isn't very good at keeping a secret. I won't bore you with the build as it's mostly stock right now. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55774.jpg So, I've been collecting a few bits and pieces. Got a Carisma M10DT body at the LHS. It's a Beetle. They didn't have the clear body, just the pre-painted one, but I got it anyways. It's painted on the outside and a new coat of grey awaits. First this I did was to remove all of the stickers. Not sure why the biggest sticker would say RC. Surely we an all figure that bit out. Same goes for the Volkswagen Beetle sticker. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55779.jpg I have an Axial AE-5 ESC kicking around so I'll use that for now. Also got a Hitec HS646 WP servo and an Airtronics RX-471W waterproof receiver to go with my Airtronics MT-4s radio. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55778.jpg I picked up a couple of these trays on Ebay. One for this build and one for my son's Falken G6. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55791.jpg Here it is installed. I like it. Nice and clean. I found a Holmes Hobbies 27t motor at the LHS and picked that up as well. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55786.jpg Top view. I'm going to mount the receiver 180° from what you see here so the antenna exits the back. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55781.jpg The build is pretty much stock so far other that the fact that I added a set of aluminum Honcho links and have installed them as a 4 link setup. The Carisma body is quite large, much bigger than than the Tamiya Bug. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/attac...-04-56-1-1.jpg One thing I don't like about the Carisma Bug body is the shape of the front fender. The back of the fender is vertical. You can see it here. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55790.jpg I'd like to push it back a bit like this. Maybe something similar at the back. Just not sure how. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55793.jpg I wish it was as easy to do in Lexan as it is to do in Photoshop. I cut a bit of the frame off at the back to make it easier to fit the body. I guess I'm committed now eh. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55792.jpg This is about the stance I'm looking for. Maybe even lower but I need to see how clearance works. May try trimming the fenders a bit. Just need to figure out how to best mount the body. The wide body mounts that come with the Dingo (and my son's Falken G6) fit the pre-drilled holes in the body just fine but are way too high for what I'm trying to achieve. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55787.jpg That's it for now. Will update as more progress is made. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build I almost bought a vw body a few years ago for my dingo. Keep up the work |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Started on the body surgery today. Made the first cut like so: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55829.jpg Can hardly see it http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55828.jpg Used fibreglass tape. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55830.jpg And Shoe Goo. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55831.jpg Here's the high tech applicator. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55832.jpg The results so far. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55833.jpg Going to have to figure out how to fill this gap. Am also going to trim the fender flush with the running board. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55834.jpg Looks better. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55842.jpg I'm liking it so far. This is a nice body but could use better shaped fenders. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55843.jpg Didn't like it much when it was like this. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55787.jpg Tomorrow will see the other side done. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Got some Krylon Khaki Camouflage Paint and slapped a few coats on the body. It's as flat as. Going to use black Plasti-Dip on the running boards. If it's warm enough to paint outside I'll do that this weekend. That Plasti-Dip is nasty stuff to spray in the house. Here's where I'm at. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55991.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-55992.jpg The indicator lights need some silver and orange paint and some LEDs. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build That's gonna look good. What the little Jap Zero on the fancy wooden box in the background? |

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Nice fix on the Bug Body.. It fits the Dingo wheelbase pretty good? |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Actually I've added Honcho links. It's a little longer than the Dingo. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Got some new wheels. G-Made beadlocks. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-56096.jpg Added on the headlights, door handles, etc. Had to strip off the pre-painted weathering that Carisma had sprayed on first. A Q-tip and some brake fluid took it off in seconds. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-56098.jpg Added the engine. It'll need some detailing I think. The roof rack lights and headlights and tail lights will work. Trying to fit some bulbs into the front indicator lights as well. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-56099.jpg And it has a driver. Might be this one, might be another. I always thought Wild Willy had a big head but it seems to fit here. Haven't decided yet. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-56100.jpg |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Looking good man! I really dig the roof rack. What is it off of? |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Quote:
I may need to move to this body in the future since PL no longer makes the short wb body I used. |

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Testing the lights. I don't have a light controller for the bucket lights on the roof yet. That's coming though. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-56173.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-56174.jpg Now I gotta figure out how to make some bumpers for it. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build I'm digging that reminds me of a old rally beetle. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Thanks man. I have stickers and numbers for a rally car but they're all made to go on the inside and this thing came prepainted on the outside. Need to find another solution. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build I love the tail and marker lights! |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Yeah, they work pretty good eh. The head and tail lights are made to accept a 5mm LED. The marker lights came with stickers on them. Threw those out and painted the outside Tamiya flat aluminum for the silver bits and translucent orange for the lens. Put an orange 3mm LED in for the light. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build updates? |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Nope, just got back from a month long holiday. Should be back at work on it once I get all the household maintenance stuff done. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build You have inspired me to make a baja style if I can find the parts. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Messing around on the computer at the moment. Trying to design and print a VW emblem for the hood on a 3D printer. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Nice work on the bug! I mounted a Pro-Line bug body made for the Slash on a scx10 last summer with 2.2's, it was pretty cool but had to trim the body quit a bit. I like yours better! "thumbsup" |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Added front body mounts using magnets. Seems to be pretty secure. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build I used these magnets from Lee Valley Tools. Drilling out the posts for a 3mm screw. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58428.jpg The magnet cups needed a hole too. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58431.jpg Here's all the bits and pieces. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58429.jpg Here's the magnet cups and disks. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58430.jpg The magnets are glued into the cups and the disks glued to the body. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58433.jpg Here's the crappy VW logo i made with my cheap 3D printer. A better one is on it's way. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58434.jpg Cheers eh, Todd |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Had a new emblem printed up at Shapeways. Looks a lot better than the one I printed at home. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58804.jpg Haven't had a chance to do much else. Between holidaze and getting back to work it's pretty busy around here. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Nice build. You got a real nice style in detail work. Nice to see, so many people loose that along the way with all the options for purchase. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Thank you sir. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Started on some inner fenders. Found that sour cream containers we pretty close to the right size. A bit of scissor work and some black paint and voila! I may put a bit of velcro on the top of them and inside the fender to hold them on place. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58906.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58907.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58908.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58909.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58910.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58911.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58912.jpg On to the back wheels next. Cheers eh, Todd |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Gotta question. Has anyone had any luck filling body holes in a lexan body? If so, what did you use? |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build I wanted to build for the sake of building. So I built my mom a dingo. Now she wants a bug body. Where did you get that she'll???? I've bought several trying to find a good match. No luck! Yours is beauti. I'm digging it! So I need to know the who what where when on that shell. BTW I've never body filler on lexan sorry I'm no help |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build This thread has inspired me, as well. I've ordered a bug body for my Trail Trekker since this 1:10 is so nice I can't compete. |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build I got the body at my local hobby shop. They only ever had two. I bought one and should'a bought the other but didn't. It's funny that they had the body and some other spares for this car but I never actually saw the whole car there. You can order it direct from here. Edit - no you can't - it's been discontinued. Cheers eh, Todd |

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Well it's been a while since I've posted anything here. Went toy trucking with my 10 year old last night in the rain. Pretty happy with how the Bug handles but I took out the inner fenders as they were rubbing on the tires. Paint colour and shape make it blend into the rocks. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62413.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62412.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62411.jpg Bouncing along over the rocks. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62410.jpg Here's my son's rig. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62408.jpg |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Loving the Bug. The FC looks good in blue, too. #CamBrady2017 |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Finally got around to working on the bug again. Nothing major. I threw a bumper on the front. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62511.jpg And then I started messing around in Adobe Illustrator to draw up a dashboard for this thing. Here's draft #1. Going to make it out of a couple of layers of styrene with a printed speedometer. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62513.png |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Here's a paper mockup of the dash. Don't quite have the curve right at the top but the size is close. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62517.jpg |
Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build Been too nice out to sit at the bench so went out to play toy trucks. These were at the Blackfoot RC Park here in Calgary. Managed to break off both mirrors. I'll need to get some rubber ones. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62549.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62550.jpg http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-62551.jpg |
