Axial SCX10 Tundra Rebuild

Finally i got around to start my Toyota Tundra build, or should I say, Hilux build.
My plans is to build a Tundra body so it looks like a Hilux Artic Truck AT38 edition.
For that i needed a lot of parts, even more plastic padding, and sand paper.

I allready have my SCX10 chassis, but with a Land Rover Body.
It is this chassis i will make longer, with new home made Alu Links, new wheels and tyres ( On the way from RPP hobby)

I would like to show you, but i need to find some were to put my pictures online.

Here is a little teaser of the model I am trying to copy, an hopefully with succeed.
I have remodel the grill, front bumper and the hood.
The front lights is still the same, but covered by the front grill.


Any tips on how to make the Scoop?

I recived my tyres yesterday. Now i am waiting for the wheels to come.
I build a model for my fenders. I will try to form a piece of ABS plast over it with a vaccum mold.
Hopefully it will be a sucess.


The car is shaping up nicely, but it takes some time to make everything look like I want to.


The Grill needs a little more plastic padding, an A LOT of sanding.

But that is the old pics. The 5 new ones I uploaded yesterday does not show or my post.

Where are you storing your pictures(Photobucket)? Also, did you use this method to post pictures?

Ole_Gators that was what I did.
I could also see all my pictures in preview before I saved my post, but it said, that the modorators had to aprove my post before it was shown.
That normally does not take 2 days or more does it?

So we try again.
After some long hours with the plastic padding and sandpaper, I decided to try do make my front bumper.
It is shaped in 6mm alu rods.
The small pieces is made of 4mm rods.
Now it just need to be solded together and painted

It is a really fun but demanding project.
I love it, and hate it at the same time, but when my hands finally shapes the things I have in my head, it is at very satisfieing feeling.
Here is a pic of how long i am with the front cab now.


And here is a pic of the car with the beginning shape of the fenders.
I still need to sand the mold for the fenders so i can shape a 3mm ABS plate to get the finally fenders.


I have tried to make some fenders with 0.75mm ABS, but that did not work out very vell.
I made a vaccum mold to mold the fenders, but the plast does not shape correct, and it gets to cold to fast to make a nice shape.
Next step is to try with a heat gun, and mabey make the molds bigger to have som space to shape around so i have a little workspace when I need to adjust the fenders to the cab.

After a couple of tries, I finally got the hang of how to shape the fenders with 3mm ABS plast and a heat gun.
I thought that the oven, and a vaccummold would do the trick, but the ABS plast cools down to fast, and hardens.




Here is a pic of how the fenders is on its way to a nice shape just like I hoped.



This pic is my first try to make extra wide fenders.
After i shaped it, I saw, that the fenders on the AT35 is not so square, but more round, so I think I need to try with a different mold next time.

The holydays have been great for my project.
Finally I had some time to move forward with my project.

I made new fenders, as I found out that the Hilux AT35 does not have so square fenders as my first try.
I had to reshape my mold, and try again.
Here is the result with the fenders.




I also got to work with the Grill for the front.
I took a lot of time and a couple of tries to get the right shape.
Judge for yourself if you like it.



I decided to give it a try witl leafsprings on the rear, just because I bought some earlier for at trailerproject.
I think i work out great. I had to make a new backet to mount the new leafsprings to the axle.
I have not put any dampers on yet, and I do not know if I will. Perhaps, but at that speed a Trial car drives I do not think it is needed for anything else than scale look.





I finally got around to make fenders all around the car.
It took some time with the heatgun and some lightly burned fingers, but the result is great.
It was not posible to make the fenders completly round, so I need to straighten it with plastic Padding.
Now I only need to sand it down by hand to get the right shape.... I belive it will take some time.

I also got myself a little Christmas present.



The wheels is Gear Head 1.55”, CNC-machined aluminum wheels


My tires is Mickey Thompson Baja Claw 114mm 1,55.


I am still working on the scoop but it is getting closer to a complete car.

Next step is to figure out how to mount the body on the frame.
I still have not worked that part out yet.
I also need to make space for the battery and where to put all the eletronic.

Thanks, it is also quite difficult to keep the concentration when there is work and family also demanding some attention. It took some while to get the hands to produce what was in my mind, and it is also a lot of compromises when nothing is the same scale, or realistic scale compared to the original Hilux AT35
My plans is hopefully to have it ready and running, when the snow comes, so I can get some pictures of my Artic Truck in its right environment.
Thanks to a lot of extra work last year I now have the money I need to buy the parts missing. Now I just want to make it look really nice and be finished so I can get out and drive it.

Your home made parts look great. Finding bodies the same scale is definitely not an easy task. Keep up the good work.

Sweet use of the vacuum mold and making the body look like that hilux version. Always looked the big overfenders it has!
