Just started to work on my first rock crawler. This is my entry vehicle going into the hobby. I like the idea of building the whole kit instead of a ready to run rig. But that’s just me!
Anyways this is what I’m starting with.
Just soldered new bullet plugs into the motor connections and a deans plug to the esc.
I honestly felt like I was sort of paying too much for all this stuff, after all I thought, it was just a scale car.
After receiving just the esc I seriously fell in love with just how good the quality was. And than after receiving more components, they kept leaving me in awe with the quality. Now I’m thinking “jeez if I tried to save money and got amazing quality stuff, imagine what else is out there!”.
Anyways, I plan on making my own from brush bar, and maybe a light cage for the cab of the Comanche. Just some quick shots of what I’ve gotten so far! (I’m waiting on the rest of the stuff to be shipped!)

I just saw your rig! Looks good and funny thing is that I’m actually making a Comanche as well. I got the i hora hard body kit. Really good quality, but the instructions are shit haha.

So after about 2 hours of trying to figure out why the wheel beads were slipping off the rims when I tightened them, I figured the proper way and now they are mounted!, now I only wish I would off thought about painting the back piec behind the actual face of the rim. Oh well! So I just finished building the kit a couple hours ago.
I have to say, axial has made me love the hobby. The only thing I can complain is 1, there was a piece missing in my kit. A shaft. I was able to go to work and machine my own though (I am a machinist by trade). 2, I wish there was less threading of plastic parts. Basically ALL bolts go into unthreaded plastic and it’s obviously going to be a problem with time. I might even go in and do a bolt and nut conversion to all bolts (or mainly the ones that will be loosened and fastened often) or simply upgrade to metal parts. But than that basically means building a whole other kit. Overall I am happy with the quality worksmanship that has gone in the kit.
I came across only 1 problem, and that was that my servo was either too short or too long and it would get in the way of the A brace on the right shock tower.
The other problem was the cheap tires I bought. The car would sort of turn and hop or do a sort of step turn, I did some tease arch and found Its because the foams are too small for the tires. Even my girlfriend said “those look flat!”. But that’s my fault.
Just 2 hours into crawling my little hill and I already broke a mirror! Haha
I haven’t even painted the body and I’m already scratching it! But that’s how much I was having, so that’s ok!
Major upgrade that I feel need to be done ASAP are, shocks and transmission case.

I keep calling it a Comanche to help me feel better for being so dumb and not noticing it’s just a Cherokee in the first place! Hahaha

X2, OP you'll find that these are more durable than you might think and that some flex is good else we'd all have tiny trucks bent up into little balls of metal. :ror: "thumbsup"

As for tires/foams, they foam should not necessarily fill the tire, depends on foam type, hardness, single stage, two stage, etc. By looking at the tires I knew they would not be great performers, ime better to buy name brand tires ymmv. Are the beadlocks plastic or metal? I like my 1.9 wheels to weigh about 76g per wheel for good performance but not too heavy. :)

Definitely need better wheels. I have my eye on some from rc4wd I’ll be purchasing later this week. And yes the bead locks are 3piece Metal! They weigh a good amount, I don’t know the exact number.

Also, I cleaned up the wiring a bit, the servo I purchased claimed to be water proof but I still opened it and put marine grease on the river seals. I used the provided box with the rubber passage for the wires. I cut the esc and servo wires than put them through the rubber along with some marine grease than soldered them back up. Pretty easy process. Marine grease is awesome!
The truck was pretty dirty so to test the water resistance I drenched it very thoroughly and it worked just fine! AWESOME!
Now time to get some scratches off the body and get it ready for primer.

I have now come to a stop, front axle is hopping at about 1/2 throttle and full turn. I’m doing research on what it could be now. Might pull the axle apart and rebuild

I'm kinda nuts when it comes to wheels and tires. IMO, wheels can determine the overall look of a vehicle, and can enhance even the color.

That being said...this is what I would do...

These are 1.7's but serve 2 purposes, keeps the same height as your Grabber tires and maintains the 5 lug wheels that Cherokee's come with.

Can't wait to see it painted. You can use automotive touch up paint on hard bodies too, giving a multitude of color options. "thumbsup"

Definitely on with you on wheels and tires, I wanted more of a retro look to the truck and that’s why I went with the white steelies. But I definitely will need new tires and those look great!

As to the paint I was thinking of doing something of a barn truck like I did to this ol Chevy, but I figured the whole “barn truck” fits more to the chevys and fords. After a long day at work, I got started on the painting process. First used some Tamiya primer than after it settled for a couple hours I used Tamiya ts-58 pearl light blue, Ive let it sit for about 2 hours now and should be getting ready to mask! Yes there is still more color to come! I need to head down to Walmart and get some bed liner spray. I like the texture it leaves. As long as the wheel wells, I made one but it was..funny looking haha. Just finished the main part of painting. I’m really happy with how it came out and the overall look. Now time to figure wether I’m going to be fabricating my own bumper or buy one that I like. YES! I saw those on their website and really liked them. I really like the bead locks I have installed now but they are 26mm (1.69inc) will they mount on them?
