Default Motor and Diff Case Protector

I bought a Protector for Diff Case from AsiaTee Hobbies made by Topcad because it was low price and had the color that I wanted. This metal thing was attached to the rear Differential.

When I put this thing on I noticed that it was a very tight fit, but did not know why.

After I went crawling my motor smoked up and really smoked up, and I believe the motor is dead. This is the first time I have ever seen smoke come out of my Axial Wraith so easily.

I took off the Protector and noticed that the gears had been rubbing up against this thing, so I believe this is the reason why my motor had burned to death.

Put the original stock protector back in place and have to order a new motor.

Does anyone have experience with this? Anyone have bad experience with Topcad? Am I right in assuming that this could cause the Motor to burn up?

I am a total Newb to this hobby and could use all the help possible.
Thank you,

Sounds like you already figured it out. Try putting the offending piece back on turning the wheels before and after. If it caused the problem you should notice a difference in turning the back wheels
