I just got a message that my order for a AX30793 Dig upgrade was shipped today. I guess that means that they are real. ----------------Updated------------------------------------- Assembly Process Remove the transmission, disassemble it , and clean it. Also remove the outdrive shafts from the output gear. Reassemble the output drive using the dig front engager and the existing front output shaft. The AX80051 spacer that has no apparent use in the standard build of the transmission keeps the bearing in the front engager in place. Without it the bearing will slip through the drive gear. The output drive is put back in and the transmission case is put back together. The next step is to assemble the dig mechanism. The dig slider fork is placed on the fork shaft and the dig slider is placed on the dis slider shaft. The assembled dig fork and dig slider is put into the back of the transmission so that the dig slider shaft goes into the front engager. The dig engager output fits into the rear of the transmission aligning up on the screw posts. The motor plate, spur gear cover and slipper clutch is put back on to the transmission and the dig server mount is put on the transmission The linkage for the fork shaft is assembled and the server is mounted. The dig is in the rear wheel locked position in this photo. The rod is extending 4 to 5 mm between the rod end and the case. When the dig is in the free wheel position, the rod is extended 2 to 3 mm. The transmission is now ready to be put back in. Will update when installed. Last edited by k7zpj; 01-09-2013 at 01:42 PM. |

I finally got time to complete the installation. Got the motor mounted, the mesh set on the spur gear and got the cover back on. Things were going great until I tried to put the drive shaft on dig out put. I couldn't get the grub screw to go through the drive line coupler and the dig output. I started measuring and found that the shaft was about 1/2 mm too long to go into the coupler. I had another drive line set so I decided to try another coupler before grinding off the end of the drive line. It fit perfectly. So I measured the new coupler and it was 1.5 mm deeper than the one that came with my Wraith kit. In the picture you can see the difference in the finish on the front coupler which is original and the rear which came from the spare parts. Finally got it installed on the skid, tested and got the Wraith back together. Everything went back together with no clearance issues with the interior. I plan to run it through a few packs today and try measure the turning radius for 4x4 vs 2x4 vs dig. |

Nice post. Is DIG addictive? Now that you had the chance to test it? Looking forward to your turning radius measurements. Please also tell a little about how it is set up with the remote control (noobish? Perhaps but I have a feeling that I want to attempt the same)

What radio are you using with it? I just finished my dig install as well works perfect except for a radio issue that came up. So no rear lock for me:(

I am using a Futaba 4PL Radio with the R2104GF receiver. The Dig server is connected to CH3. The radio has a 3 position switch (Left, Center, Right) that is programed to control CH3. Left is 4x4, Center is 4x2 freewheel and Right is Dig Engaged. I am using a 7954SH servo which is overkill but I had it on hand so I used it instead of buying a smaller servo. It is digital so I was able to program the center and end points with a servo programmer to minimize the trim/EPA adjustments on the radio. The EPA is set at around 40 for right and left. Here is my build thread that lists parts used in my build. Flatbed Rubi Wraith Last edited by k7zpj; 04-30-2012 at 08:19 PM. |

I made outside yesterday and made the turning radius measurements with the dig unit. 4x4 -------------------> 107.25 inches / 272.4 cm 4x2 Rear Free Wheel -> 86.75 inches / 220.3 cm Dig Rear Locked ------> 30.25 inches / 76.83 cm There is a noticeable improvement in high speed steering when the rear wheels are free turning. Other than cutting cookies in the driveway and raising a lot of dust, I haven't used the rear lock for any serious crawling. In case you are interested, the curb to curb turning radius of a car is the diameter of the circle described by the outside wheels when turning on full lock. Please note diameter is correct. The term turning radius should really be turning circle. The red X's in the diagram show where I took the measurements. I made a mark at "start" where the outside edge of the outside wheels crossed the axis. When the outside wheels crossed the axis at "end" I made a second mark. I completed the circle back to start to make sure that a true circle was completed. I then measured the distance between the marks to get the turning radius. A lot easier to do than describe. The expansion joints in my driveway made a perfect x-y axis for the measurement points. You do need to make several circles to make sure the vehicle is making a true circle and that the turning radius is the same in both directions. I did have to do some fine tuning on the front end alignment to get them the same. When the dig is locked, the Wraith doesn't actually turn in a true circle so it probably considered zero turn, but I wanted to show the numbers for the comparison. Next step is to hit the trails and find a big rock pile to crawl on. Last edited by k7zpj; 01-16-2013 at 12:59 PM. |

Does the length of the rear driveshaft change at all? How many degrees does the output have to rotate before it locks in? You think your dig servo might be just a little overkill? What size bearing goes inside the trans lower gear? Let us know how it shifts when bound up in the rocks. |

| Re: Updated:AX30793 Dig upgrade shipped. -- Turning Radius Measurements Posted. No, it doesn't change. The dig slider slides on the output shaft which stays in place. Quote:
I am using a HS-7954SH servo which has 403 Torque oz./in. A HS-65MG would probably work at a low cost. If anyone has suggestions for what servo to use for the dig, please reply. It is 4x7x2.5mm. It is small enough that it go right through the hole in the output gear if you don't use the space to keep it in place. That is going to take more time wheeling to find out. The dig will shift under a moderate bind. That's where the high torque server comes in handy. Under a real heavy bind, I suspect you might have issues shifting. When shifting it does help to be moving at a slow speed to help engage the dig slider. | |

Being that the Wraith and Ridgecrest's drive lines are almost the same, or the same. Do you think that dig unit would work on a Crest? I'm really interested in putting a dig unit on mine. Any info on dig unit for a Ridgecrest for anybody who has done it would be great! Thanks for any replies.
