Question Making Custom Rollcage Components

Hey, I'm wanting to braze or weld my own custom roll-cage components for my Axial Wraith. I've seen a few guys do it before, and I'd like to know how they make the threaded ends to bolt them to the cage. I've tried drilling and threading a piece of solid 3/16" shaft before, and it didn't stay straight. (And yes, I used a lathe, I'm not a noob.) Any other info on making cage parts would also be appreciated.

Hmm... That's a good idea.

You used a lathe and couldn't get it to stay straight?

That is how most do the versions you see.

Well, now I'm wonder if I just didn't have the bit in the chuck deep enough. Then it'd make sense if it wasn't in the exact center when it started drilling. Need to try it again I guess.

Just punch a dimple for the bit. I've tried doing it on both a drill press and a lathe and it's hard to get centered. A center finder helps:

Buy Zero Zero Center Finder at Woodcraft

The key to doing it on a lathe is a small, very short (to eliminate flex) bit, at least for a pilot hole.
