help making Spawn go slower Newbie warning … I got a Spawn yesterday as my first RC truck. I’d like to make it go slower for better crawling performance, but don’t see many options from Axial to do so. The 32P spur gears run from 48T to 56T. The 32P pinion gears run from 11T to 17T. Stock is 56T/12T for ratio of 4.66. The only option listed by Axial that would give a higher ratio is to change the 12T pinion to 11T, for ratio of 5.09. This isn’t much of a change. Are there other options?<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> |
Re: help making Spawn go slower Swap the ring and pinion in both axial for the under drive set. |
Re: help making Spawn go slower In addition to underdriving the axles, you can go up to 60t in 32p on the spur. You could also look into a higher turn motor. The higher the turn number the less rpm and more torque they make. |

Re: help making Spawn go slower I vote change the motor to something with a higher turn. I have a Robinson 9t 32p pinion. So they are available. |
Re: help making Spawn go slower I thought stock was 20/56...? EDIT: looked at mine it is 12.....the manual hasn't been updated for the 32p gears then... |
Re: help making Spawn go slower 55t integy motor off eBay will bring it to a crawl. 45t will give a little speed. 35t is what most of us use. |

You would need to drill or ream the center hole in the gear to 5mm and use the Associated octagon slipper pads. These larger spurs would also be too big to fit under the Axial gear cover. May be more trouble than you want to go through just to use the GT2 and SC10 4x4 spur gears, but it would give you a lot of spur/pinion options when combined with the Robinson Racing 9 and 10 tooth pinions. |

Re: help making Spawn go slower 64t spur fits without the cover. If you want low low gearing. |

Re: help making Spawn go slower Update: A 62-tooth 32 pitch Associated spur gear (#91094) will not fit under the stock Axial gear cover (#AX80078 ). A 60-tooth Associated spur (#91095) will require trimming of or removing the notch for the drive shaft from the gear cover. It will still have rubbing issues until the gear and/or cover are worn down. A 58-tooth (#91096) may fit without any mods to the gear cover, just need to find one to be sure. The gear cover is 49.2mm ID over the spur gear, the 60-tooth spur is 49.4mm OD, the 62-tooth spur is 50.8mm OD. The 58-tooth should be around 47.5mm OD, but I'll take a real world measurement when I get my hands on one. |
Re: help making Spawn go slower Change the motor. Why people are advising UD gears at this stage is beyond me. You should be able to get what you want from motor and Pinion/Spur changes. Personally I would only ever use UD gear in the rear axle to help crawling performance. Gives a slight dig effect and minimizes the rear bouncing when climbing. Leave the front stock but that is for future tweaking. :) |
Re: help making Spawn go slower My recommendation was UD in both axles not a single axle. The UD gears will further lower his speed and increase tork. On addition they are hardened so they are stronger. A bonus should you ever try a sensored brushless such as the 2nd Gen Tekin ROC 412 or the Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster 540 Pro. Then you have the best of both worlds, ultra slow crawling power and blinding speed. Are you running NiMh? Or you running LiPo? How many cells? |
Re: help making Spawn go slower I understand the theory. It's just not what I would have thought would have been recommend as solution for a simple issue that everyone has with the stock Wraith. :) Nevermind....I'll shut up. lol |
Re: help making Spawn go slower Does anyone even have the underdrive gears in stock? |
Re: help making Spawn go slower Put a 35 turn Holmes hobbies brushed motor in it..that will slow it down plenty. |
