| Axles...axles...axles.
Hey guys, Just got my first Wraith yesterday and decided to finally allow myself to buy some Vanquish parts. In looking at the options available for axles, the Curries look pretty cool, and the RockJock diff case looks REALLY appealing. I guess what I'm wondering is, what's the best axle for running too much power to the truck? I'd like to make a bit faster of a mud truck/FOFF build and was wondering if some of those axles are more designed for slow crawling vs. my plans. I'm not going to make it go 30mph or anything, just a bit faster than my trail rigs and with a ton of torque behind it. Thoughts? I was also looking at SSD Diamonds...they might be the better choice when looking at driveshaft angles, but wasn't sure so thought I'd ask before buying. Thanks!!! |

I can't bring myself to buy that high end of a part I'm going to smash. Lol But beef tubes and axle truss with the inside gears and ect built seem to work good. Then a DMG skid plates to protect plastic. J.A.W - just another wraith & a Bomber! |

I went with a Dlux big bearing housing, beef tubes, and a full width kit and my plastic AR60 has been great on 4S.

Anything with a good locker and hd gears is gonna work great. I just got the vanquish v2 housings they are awesome. Bigger pinion bearings are your friends. |

This is all great info....although, do you guys see any benefit to one axle over another outside of bigger bearings? I was hoping to justify spending the money to myself that they would be "better". That "full width" kit sounds interesting, what's that? Excuse my ignorance, but that one has me stumped. |

In my experience they are all durable enough and maybe even overkill, beef tubes/good locker/cvd's and Hardened gears is fine even for mph!

The reason I was thinking of doing them on this build is because I was also thinking of running 3.8" wheels and tires. Not sure why, just seemed like a good choice for a mud truck! With the extra rotating mass, I was thinking I'd need a heavier duty drivetrain throughout the truck..... Or maybe 3.2" maxx wheels....still not 100% decided Last edited by Creepcreep; 01-09-2016 at 08:29 AM. |

I like the look for the Diamonds. I have no idea which are more durable though.

I'm getting the VP V2 aluminum axle housings because they have bigger bearings.

FOFF or not, no way I can throw around $1200 on one axle!

I keep trying to convince myself that 1808s are just too expensive. I keep trying but they are just so nice. I love that they are built ridiculously strong and can be made to order in so many different configurations. Maybe one at a time? Ugh, they are so expensive. I need to win that billion dollar powerball so I can laugh at the cost of things in a different way. $1200 for axles, is that all? I'll take 4 so I have spares.

They are not for everybody, thats for sure but, if youre hardcore into this hobby and need to upgrade and break lots of parts, maybe they are for you? I would like to see a hardcore guy that drives his car all the time and has issues with breakage post up with an actual number of how much his axles have really cost. I think almost everybody would be surprised. Over time, after counting all the broken parts, bearings, metal housings, fancy center sections, broken ring and pinions etc,. I wouldnt doubt if there were a good handful of people who have spent MORE money on lesser axles and continue to throw money at them because there is no way to upgrade somethings, like shafts.

I am on the same page...A couple of broken housings and these are paid for...I love the super beefy axles shafts too. It would be one item to never worry about. Ever.

IDK, I've ran the numbers as suggested and my axles have cost me a set of steering links for $24.99 and a pair of knuckles at $26.88. Those weren't because I broke anything, but because I wanted new stuff for performance reasons. I've driven the same rig at least two times a week(typically 6 hours at a time) for the last three months straight and when there was more daylight; double that. I jump it, I smash it into rocks and crawl. It's had its share of serious abuse, and the axle itself is just fine. That's why I am choking on $200 for Vanquish, and choking WAY harder on $1200 for a pair of 1808's. But still...they look so damn good, and I can only imagine what it would be like not to wince when it takes a hard hit, then again...based on my experience, I don't wince currently with that rig, it doesn't like to break! I'm trying to think of how axles get so much punishment anyways? Rocks obviously, but aside from that, I feel like my links take the better portion of the abuse along with my poor servo horn. |
