Default Axial hex + VP hub = slop

I just mounted up a set of VP wheels, very nice stuff indeed. I am noticing that the stock hexes are a bit loose fitting in the VP hubs. I never liked the look of the Axial hexes when I built the kit. Poor casting. And the grub screw is kinda pointless. It sits right on a step down in the axle. When I took the hex off I noticed just little half circle marks from tightening them down. Tightening them also gouged the axle making it hard to remove the bearing because of burring.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Has anyone upgraded hexes?

I noticed a little back and forth with my slw's in the rear but the front with dh's are fine ... I switched to a narrower hex by HPI and problem solved

Are you running the 600 width SLW spacers on yours. If so the hub is thinner than the lip on the spacer so when you tighten down the nut for the wheel it does not tight down on to the wheel so it is loose. What I did to fix it was to grind down the centering portion on the hex enough so the nut will tighten against the hub.

I would like to know what spacer and width of spacer you are running.

Thanks

Mine does the same thing with 350s up front and 600s out back. Im not sure I ever checked my DH2's. I have started pushing a piece of electrical tape over the axle stub and down onto the hex before installing the wheels...problem "solved".

That is because the hubs are thicker on the DH's versus the SLW's.

I spoke to Jim about this when I first got mine and from what he told me they have their machines setup to work within a certain tolerance and they keep that in check. They also have to provide some margin due the possibility of different brand hexes being slightly larger or smaller. For instance...if every Axial driver couldn't get the hubs back off of the hexes once installed that wouldn't be very good.

All of these hubs are probably within their "acceptable" range and we just need to make them work the best we can with each set of hexes. Cutting the center of nub on the hex down and/or using tape or something similar should take care of the slop.

I had to file the a little of the nub off my hexes for SLW hubs also, no big deal and not the only wheel out that needs it.

Thanks for the relpies guys.

I am using 350 front and 475 out back on SLWs. Grinding the little round nub on the hex lets the nut go on farther holding things tight.

There is still rotational slop as far as the fit of the hex into the hub but it is taken up by the tight wheel nut now. I just didn't want the wheel slop to grow over time and wear.

I would still like to find nicer hexes than these cheap cast junk ones that came with the kit. I mean, everythig else is getting pimped, why not the hexes.

I still say the grub screw is in a poor spot. I don't even tighten it up at all anymore. It chews up my axle shaft.

You know now that you mention it...it seems like it might make sense to have a nice heavy set of steel hexes. It'd be a good place for weight and if they could provide the proper fit it would be that much better.

I'm running Losi hexes on mine and they have slop(a little). Doesn't seem to bother perf too much. I did notice this when i had my SLW's on my LCC also. Gonna do the tape thing i guess.
