Exclamation Chaotic crawler help (Now with pictures)

Hey guys (gals) I got a chaotic crawler bodiless special lw version and I can't get it to crawl like I want and it's very frustrating. I'm running big bore shocks and the titanium links. What would be a good setup for this? And how much should I limit my stock xr10 shocks if I decide to run them? What link spots should I use? And shock positions for big bore and stock xr10 shocks? Thanks I'm up against a wall trying to tune this thing.

first thing os to limit the front shocks to 3.5 eye to eye
you can run eathe 3.75 or 4 in on the rear

now for the links
both front an rear both go in the inner set of holes closest to the center fof the chasis
the fronts go mid chasis
rears go to the upper half of the chasis
im not given you exact spots because of driven styles an all that

shocks i ran mine
front 3 holes in an in the upper holes
rears 3 holeas in in lower holes

i had dhs in the front with 3 slugs in the
slws in rear with nothing
donnas front boss claws in rears

that is a really good start an if you have any other things i can help on just shoot me a pm an ill see if i can help

I would try this set up. Randy looked at my rig at Midwest and told me I should try it. And let me tell ya that it works very well and it woke my rig up.

the way to test/tune is to drive a line on the rocks..
note how it handled and move the links and run the same line again
until your happy with it. its alot of work but well worth it.
as was stated..driving styles make up alot of it too.

i was comfortable with my final link placement..
inner holes f/r 3 down from top.

i tried several link placements and it did too much one way and not enough the other way..
this was the happy medium i found that worked for me.

then its just practice,practice,practice..

im thinkg thats about all i had . i found out as long is its not setting on the links an ride highth an it has a lil down traval it good an you nwant enough flex to get a tire under neath the tire then its money . if you cant get a tire under it then take off a lil limiter. most of all just be sure your not bound up anywhere . i had to space my shocks out about a 1/4 at the top cause it was binding there. hope this helps you out .

thanks for the post of the guys that ive have helped . i run alot an play with lots off stuff to find what i think works best to help save guys alil time an get a good starting point

What is your guys ground clearance? I'm sitting at 3 3/4 in the front after doing slow rides setup and I only get 4" of flex

I'm gonna take a stab and guess you are using too long a shock to begin with. Your GC seems high, and you should be able to get about 5" under one tire while the other 3 stay planted. If you limit the 4" big bore to 3.5" you probably limited it's stroke by half, which will ultimately limit your max flex, because the shock body is too long, and there is not enough stroke.

What part number big bore did you buy? If you bought the 4 pack, you probably have too long a shock setup. A cap mod would exaggerate this problem especially on a already long shock.

Travis is so smart...guess that's why he's...THE KING. Have NO idea what Scorpions have to do with it tho.

Sounds like he's on the right path. I ran the 4" Big Bores limited on all 4 corners of the Special & had the same issue. Like Travis said...by internally limiting em, you're actual stroke is now shorter than it would with a 3.5" shock.

I personally ran my GC a tad higher than most with little to no issues but did use the RCP Crawlers internal springs to gimme a semi droop setup out front & it helped lower the ride height & gimme a little better stability.

Once I went to a 3.5" shock all around...my rig just felt better...but that's me. I know that a lotta cats run a 3.5" up front & 4.0" out back or like Rando Calrisiun...run 4.0's all around.

Maybe try the semi droop setup & see how ya like it.

Yeah I did the shock mod, and they are about 4.5" if I don't limit them and I have 1/2" of shaft to use when they are limited to 3.5". It's very frustrating and I need to get this figured out I already swapped back to my stock chassis for the mean time because I could not crawl with the chaotic chassis. What is the right big bore part number to order? I want to make this chassis work because it seems very recommended by top people on here and seeing the videos it works very well. I just need to get mine set up with the right shock length and ride height. Thanks

You want trx2660 up front and trx2662 in the back. Do not do the cap mod. Instead get either JeepinDoug's or DLux shock standoffs. In fact if you just buy a pair of stock caps, you can probably re-use one pair of shocks for he rear.

Don't give up on her XJ...I know it's frustrating. There are very few chassis' or even parts that you can just throw together & have work killer. Test & tune is key to get the full potential out of any competition vehicle.

The Special is a PROVEN winner & you have the designer along with most of the Chaotic team drivers here to help ya get it there. If you can...snap a handful of pics & post em up. Include links & positions, axles, shocks etc. Us crawlers are visual creatures. We'll get you & yer rig workin BEYOND your expectations bro.

Move your upper links to the inner row of holes.

Also your upper links are on backwards.(not that matters)

Let me Know how it works for you tomorrow.
