| New owner basic question
Hi folks, new XL owner here and just found the forum. I have a question, and forgive me if this is silly. I have a brand new XL. No mods, nothing done to it at well. I am taking it out for its second drive, and I noticed when I plugged in the 2nd battery (3s 5000mah x 2) I got a spark from the connector. Kind of surprised me.. I don't remember seeing one before but the batteries may not have been charged completely the very first run. Is that normal? It *seemed* to run OK just the spark took me by surprise. Second question: I noticed that the fan on the ESC didn't seem to turn on either. Is that normal or does it only turn on when it gets hot? Thanks again, I have experience with aircraft RC but this is my first land vehicle since I was a little kid with a nicad Grasshopper! Runs good other than I took it on pavement and my LR tire seems to be unglued from the rim now! e: I just tried it again and the fan DOES turn on for a second or two upon the second battery being connected, but right off again. The spark is normal and the ESC fan will normally only kick on when it gets hot.

Any reason in particular you get the spark on the second battery? Just ran into this myself-

It is the inrush current for the capacitors on the esc. It is on the second battery pack because with 4 s setup that completes the circuit. With 4s or 6s, both batteries are in series, so no energy is available to the esc until Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk |

At start, the fan on the ESC turns on until it initializes. The ESC begins to initialize when the receiver starts sending it a signal, it takes a second or two for it to finish. The spark occurs when the second battery is plugged in because the circuit isn't complete with only one battery in the stock split configuration. |

Interesting.. Not that it seems to matter, but would there be a way to eliminate the spark by slowing the the current from the second battery?

I think the only way you are going to get rid of that spark is by somehow adding a switch (that could handle all that power) that you could turn on after the batteries are connected.

Split the crossover wire and add an anti spark Lipo connector. I have one and it works great. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...obalID=EBAY-US So you plug both Lipos in first then plug the crossover wire together and Abracadabra !!!! No more sparky. |
