Default MIP shaft super hot

Its getting hot. Really hot. After 1 pack- maybe 10 mins of pretty tough running the MIP driveshaft to the rear axle is the hottest thing by far on the truck. 3s, stock gearing, MMP/Tekin pro4 hd 3000kv.

I've disassembled and isolated every part of the driveline and nothings is binding/rubbing. I've greased the spline and cups on the MIP thinking that maybe during suspension travel there is friction on the shaft, but its still hotter than the planet Mercury.

I guess it's not a huge problem other than it may compromise the lock tight on the grub screws on the shaft. Anyone else notice this on their MIP shaft? Thanks in advance for all input.

Could the heat be coming from the pinion gear, transferring to the shaft?

I tend to probe around things like electronics and driveline between packs to feel for heat, I haven't noticed any heat in that area.

Interesting thought. I will run without the gear cover tonight and test your theory. Thanks.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the axle gear pinion, connected to the drive shaft.

Oh. Yes. No. No heat in that area.

It's measurably hotter on the transfer case side of the shaft, which is the female side of the shaft in my case.

Maybe the tranny output shaft bearing went?

That's possible. I haven't dug into that yet. I will peel it apart tonight and see what's what. Thanks for your insight bean! I will report my findings.

The heat won't hurt the loctite. So nothing should come apart due to that. When we build engines we use loctite on several bolts. Like on exhaust manifold bolts.. and a dry bearing will cause heat, cause the grease is a solid but when warmed up turns to a semi liquid and helps cool and lubricate the bearings. So it dry it can do neither.

Good to know about the loctite. I was just concerned because I've always used heat to free up some things that have been loctited for a long time.

It actually cures and hardens on a bolt due to friction heat from the threads rubbing against each other. Only time we use heat is for rusty stuff like exhaust bolts.

Actually not, Only certain types of LocTite cure like that(hitemp).

Coming straight from Henkel loctite is just a liquid plastic. Normal Lowtemp will melt with heat, and I doubt any of you are using hitemp.

I noticed the MIP rear driveshaft impacts the left upper link when the suspension is fully-compressed. Depending on how your vehicle is configured it might be rubbing against the left upper link enough to get hot.

I noticed today on my stock RTR the rear diff was hot where it connects to driveshaft. I was running on 3s.

Disassemble the transmission and make sure the gears are greased and that everything fit snugly without binding. You may need a bunch of 5mm x 0.1mm shims, and you may also need to grind a bit off the end of the gearbox output shaft where it fits into the transfer case.

Have you guys oiled the CVD joints? If you haven't, there will be constant friction between the moving parts in the joints, and that will generate a significant amount of heat when you're driving hard.

I greased mine when i built it. On the second pack I felt it to see if it was hot after reading this and it was.

I took the temp of my stock rear drive shaft last night after a full speed burn through my yard. At the transfer case side it was 111, at the axle side it was 85. Ambient temp was 65-70ish. Motor was 135. Just finished my kit build 10 days ago. Interesting.

I've never been a big fan of grease in open CVDs. Grease only works well when you can pack a boot full of the stuff, so it always gets squished back into the spaces between the moving parts. It won't re-flow on its own. For open CVDs, thick oil (I use 100wt gun-slide oil) works better, because it re-flows and relubricates parts that it had previously been squished out of. Also, it slowly seeps out and carries dirt away with it.
